The invention relates to drying machines and has for an object to provide a machine for dryingl and carlamizing materials, such as cloth and the like.
Mv invention embodies among other features a casing provided with means for feeding the cloth onto a series of rollers revolubly mounted within the casing and heated, the said rollers being arranged in tiers so that the cloth will pass from one tier to another, durino which process the cloth becomes properly dried. conveying means being provided for then removing the cloth from the casing and conveying the same to a hf-sired place, uitaoh air blowing means being provided for forcing currents of air into the casing, beneath the rollers, to prevent the eloth from becoming burned or singed the mentioned rollers being adapted to receive steam or hot air, which passes into the rollers at one end thereof and is exhausted at the other end thereof.
VV`eferenec Yis to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this sjncitication, in which siu'lilar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views. and in which Figure l is a side elevation of my device. one of the sides thereof having been removed to disclose the underlying structure. Fig. Q is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 'LS in Fig. 1, looking toward the rollers. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line #ivi in Fig. 1. looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken through one of the rollers showing the manner of mounting the same and the safety Valve thereon. Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of one of the air nozzles.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a casing 10 provided at the front end and near the top with a transversely extending slot 1l and at the rear end and near the bottom with a transversely extending slot 12. The casing l0 atthe front thereof is provided with a forwardly extending platform 13 and journaled on the platform are shafts 14, having rollers 15 keyed thereto, an endless conveyer 1G being mounted to operate over the rollers 15 and arranged horizontally. A plurality of shafts 18 is journaled in the casing 10, rollers 1S) being keyed to the said shafts and being revoluble therewith and mounted on the said rollers is a spiked endless apron Q0. the outwardly extending spikes on the said apron being arranged to extend upwardly when portions of the apron are exposed on the front side of the casing l0, suitable sprocket wheels and chains being secured to one of the shafts 14 and one of the shafts 1S a nd connected with suitable drivingl mechanism for operating both the conveyor 16 and the apron Q0, one of the shafts 1S being mounted adjacent the slot 11 in the casing for a purpose that will be hereinafter more fullyY disclosed.
Journaled in sides 21 of the casing 10 are rollers Q2, the said rollers being arranged in horizontal tiers 23 with the last roller in the second tier mounted to exteid a distance bevond the last roller in thel lirst tier and the first roller in the third tier mounted to extend a distance in front of the first roller in the second tier, the first roller in the first, tier being mounted immediately below and adjacent the slot in the casing 10.
Fach of the rollers 22 consists of a tubular body 2li terminating in tubular shanks Q5, which are journaled in the sides 21 of the easing 10, the ends of the said Shanks being adapted to project outwardly beyond the, sides of the casing. Keyed to onel of the shanks 95 of each of the rollers 22 is a toothed wheel 2G engaging a worm 27, keyed to a horizontally extending shaft 28, it
being understoml that the shaft 28 is journaled exteriorly ot' the tasing l0, the said shaft being provided with a worm 2T for each wheel (3 and eaeh of the said rollers being provided with a wheel 2G said wheels being also mounted exteriorly ot the easing 1t). 'thus when the shat't 28 is rotated the rollers in eaeh tier will revolve in the same direetion, a saal't QH being provided for each tier ot roilers. rl`he front ends of the shafts are journaled in suitable bearings 29 secured to the easing 10 and the r iar end ot the tirst shatt 2S, tor the tirst tier ot rollers, his secured thereto a bveled wheel 30 in mesh with a beveled wheel 3l secured to an intermediate sha't't 32 and having a beveled wheel 33 keyed to the lower end thereot, the seeond Y`at't 28 being provided at the r ar end with a beveled wheel 2H in mesh with the beveled wheel $55 keyed to an intermediate shat't 36 having a beveled wheel 35T keyed to the lower end thereof and in niesh with a beveled wheel 3S, keyed to the r ar end ot' the third or lowermost shat't 28, the intermediate shafts 32 and 36 being revolnbly mounted on the easing in any snitable manner. rl`hus` it will be seen that the tirst shat't 25% will ope 'ate in one direet'ion, the seeond shatt Qs will operate in the reverse direction and the third shatt will operate in a direction reverse to the second shaft or in the same direetion as the tirst shatt. ln this manner the first tier ot rollers will eonveniently rotate toward the right. the seeond tier of rollers will rotate toward the lett and the third tier ot' rollers will rotate towa t the right, t'or a purpose that will be hereinafter more t'ully disclosed. The last or third sha'it has keyed thereto a uitabte pulley Si?. adapted to receive a belt t) extending downwardly through the asing l() Yfor eonne ltion with a suitable driving nieehanisnn thus providing a m ans 'tor imparting rotation to the shafts and eonseduentiy to the rollers l2 so that the sha't'ta and rol'ierg will operate in the direetion men tioned heretofore.
ligidly mounted on one ot the outer sides Qi. ot' the easing lt) by means ot suitable brarkets -tl is a pipe ft2. having eonneetion with a suitable stiain supply pipe 4?), eon` neeted to one end et the pipe 42 and seeured to the pipe 4Q, at points pposite to earh ot the rollers ai'e auxiliary steam pipes lll-7 eah having a head 45 Connected thereto, the said heads being adapted to overlap the extended portions ot one ot' the shanks V suitable zo ot each ot' the rollers 22. parkings lil being mounted within the heads 45 and engaging the mentioned sharks so that the steam in the pipe 42 can pass into the rollers Q2 while the saine are revolving. ln a similar manner an exhaust pig e 4T is rigidly mounted by in lans oit suitable brackets lo, on the other side 2l ot the easing l0 and the extended portions ot Ithe other shanks 25 oi the rollers extend within the exhaust pipe 17, suitable parkings -lti being interposed between the overlapping edges ot the exhaust pipe ii' and the extended portions ot the shanks 23, to permit the steam in the rollers 22 to pass (uitwardly into the ex iaust pipe l?, without in any manner hindering the revolutions ot the rollers, 'the extended portions ot the shanks 23, extending within the exhaust pipe el?, are eaeh provided with a eap it) bolted on or formed with the shank and having1 pertorations 5l therein. Mounted on the cap is a valve having a shank en 'ireled by a spring S-t, the said Shanks 515 being provided with heads 55, with one and ot earh ot the springs .El abuiting against the head of; on each shank and the ap on eaeh et the extended portions ot' the shanks 25, the said springs 5l being under tension so that the ,steam admitted into eaeh ot' the rollers 2 will be ln'evented trom passing outwardly into the exhaust pipe 4T until the st am attains sutiieient pre"- sure to move the valve ."2 away troni the rap S0, thus permitting the Vxeess steam to pass through the perti'rrations fil and into the exhaust pipe ti. s mentioned, xarh ot the rollers is provided with means Ytor admitting steam thereto and permitting the steam to eseapey therefrom.y so that aieh roller will at all times have substantially the sain i amount ot' steam thereiin the steam in eaeh roller being of substantially the saine pressure. due to the 't'aet that eaeh of the rollers is pro vided with a valve :'32 operable as deseribed.
