To all wlom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM XV. EMsLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the eounty of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bolt- Heads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a bolt member which is adapted for use upon the key block of a street.

WVhere streets are paved with Belgian wooden blocks, or the like, which are laid in cement, it ordinarily requires considerable time and labor to cut or force one of these blocks out in order to take up some of the paving :t'or the purpose ot' repair.

It is the purpose of my invention to provide eertain blocks, which may be termed key blocks with ny improved bolt member which has a head disposed upon the upper face of the block, the head of each bolt being provided with openings for the reception of an extracting tool by whicl the block may be withdrawn *from position to provide an Opening in the paving. \(Vhen this Opening has been efi'ected, the adjoining blocks may be taken up readily by the use of a erowbar. A key block is disposed preferably adjaeent to trolley tracks, switches, man-holes, or wherever repairs are likely to be requirec A further Object is to provide a bolt member of the character set forth whose head is constructed so that it will not prove to be an obstruction likely to interfere with traflic, and whose openings for the reception of a hook, or other extracting implement, are arranged so that water will not aecumulate therein to 'reeze and thus close the openings, but may drain 'reel therefrom.

The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and ciaimcd, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which 2- Figure 1 is a vertieal sectional view taken through a number of paving blocks assembled, one of the bloeks being a key block and having a bolt member constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto, the latter being shown also in section; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and,

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the bolt member.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a key block which is adapted to be associated with the other paving blocks 2 as an element of a street construction, the said key block being disposed preferably adjaeent to a track switch, a man hole, or at some other point where f'equent repairs are necessary. A bolt member 3 is nounted within a vertical Opening 4 provided in the key block with its head 5 disposcd uppermost and resting upon the exposed upper face of the block, whereas the lower threaded end 6 of the bolt has a seeuring nut 7 applied thereto, in order to secure the bolt member rigidly to the block. The bolt head 5 is constructed eomparatively large in diameter and is fore-shortened axially, its outer end face being rounded so that the marginal edges of the head are thin and sharp. Owing to this shape of the bolt head, horses or persons will not stumble over the same, for the reason that their feet may slide over the head of one of these bolt members without being obstructcd materially thereby. The head 5 is provided with a transverse Opening 8 whose terminal portions 9 are flared outwardly, whereby the bottom wall of each terminal 'portion of the Opening slopes outwardly as at 10 which serve to drain water from the head Opening in rainy 'weather so that it will not freeze the'ein.

A hook or any otlcr pointed implen'ent (not shown) may be used as an extractor, and its points are engaged within the head Opening 8. It should be apparent that, when a key block has been withdrawn by the use of such an implement, the surrounding blocks may be removed :treely for the desired purpose.

\Vhat is claimed is:

1. A block of the class described having a vcrticai Opening therei, a bolt member mounted within the said Opening and having a head disposed exteriorly upon the upper face of the block, the said head having its upper face rounded and provided with a transverse Opening :tor engagement by an extracting implement.

2.
