Description
nitidi I 'naar effin,
JOHN'. NrcoLAns roMMEaraor GREENFIELD, onto.
Letters Patent No.109,6.59, dated November 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN S'l'EAM-WHEELS.
The Schedule referred toln these Pateuennd making page of the um..
Tdall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jona N rcoLAUs Pomxnn'r, of
I Greenfield, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Steam'Wheel; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a Tull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable'others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference. being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ut this specification.
llhis invention relates to improvements in wheels tol -be propelled by steam, and consists in the application to a hollow shattoi a-c.'1sed wheel wit-h buckets or vaines ot"pecnl iar arrangement, and a pair of radial dischargiiig-arms, the latter arranged for obtaining the react-ing force of the steam after its 'action on the vanes of thc wheel in a direct manner, to which it isA4 admittedfrom below by discharging tire-steam ohliqnely-npon the surthceofwater in a tank surrounding the shaft above the wheel, all as hereinafter more fully specified.
' AFigure 1 is a sectional elevation of my ixnprovtall wheel, and
Figure 2 is a plan of the bottoni with apart broken away.
A is the case or cnrb of the wheelulisk, attached to the hol-low shaft E within the case, and hav-ing 4a rim, F, at the periphery, projecting downward.
. The bottom of the wheel ls open, except around' but near the lowcredges' they are .curved or inclined from the bottom .npwardjn thedirection ofthe movement of thewhcel, at such' an angle as will be perpendicular, or nearly so, to the oblique,steam-pipes I, by
which the steam' is admitted to the buckets through the bottom of tlie wheel, so that it will strike thel snr face upon which itacts in amanner to have the. greatlllevsteam passes into the shaft E after acting .upon thev buckets, and rises to the hollow radial arms K, terminating in `dischurging-normes L, t inclined rearward and downward, and revolving'above the surface of water M- in a tank, N, Asurrounding the upper. end
of the shaft on which the' steam is discharged `in a manner to imparta. reactionary'orce to the arms; and add thereby to the ecctive forc of the wheel.
In practical propose to make the disk B of the wheel,- the rim .1?, and the buckets in one niece by casting the whole together,
'The wheel may be set in any suitable frame, and" thc spindle O on'w'hich it ljcsts'may have an adjustiugscrew applied to .it for raising or lowering it for adjusting-thc wheel relatively to the case. The wat/h tank mayvhave radial plates to contra-ct the tendency of the stcam'to force the water .around the tank.
Having thus described my invention,
I cla-im as new and desire to secure hy 'Letters Pat,v
cnt
The combination b t' the wheel, the case A, hollow 'shaft E, and the hollow reacting arme K I, when arranged todischarge the steam ou the surtce ot' thc water, substantially in the manner described.
JOHN'NICQLAUS POMMERT.
