DERRICK FOR PULLING STUMPS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. WVIELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Derricks for Pulling Stumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in derricks for pulling'stumps.
The object of my invention is to provide a derrick of this character which is mounted on a movable support, which can be readily transported from place to place and at the same time providing a derrick in which the boom is relieved of a great amount of strain and at the same time )roviding means whereby the supportsfor t e outer end of the boom may adjust themselves when using the derrick on uneven ground.
Another obj eot of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and eifective derrick of this character having certain details of structure hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved derrick in the act of pulling a stump. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the support ing means for the outer end of the boom and showing the oscillating connection with the same.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a movable frame, or skid, upon which is mounted the hoisting machinery 2. While I have shown this supporting means or frame in the form of a skid, it will be understood that it can be mounted on a vehicle if desired. The forward end of the frame or skid 1 is provided with a mast 3. Carried by the lower end of the mast 3 is a boom 4. This boom has a universal connection with the mast whereby the boom may be raised or lowered or may be swung in any direction whereby the outer end thereof may be brought directly over the stump.
Secured to the outer end of the boom 4: is a cable 12, which passes inwardly over a block 13, carried by the upper end of the mast 3, and said cable extends downwardly and is operated by the hoisting machinery 2. Surrounding the outer end of the boom 4:, on the inside of the connection with the cable 12, is an elongated sleeve 5. This sleeve is adapted to oscillate upon the boom Specification of Letters Patent.

but held against longitudinal movement thereon. The said sleeve on opposite sides 18 provided with eyes 5, which are adapted to interlock with the eyes (3 and 7 carried by sleeves 8 and S) rigidly secured on the legs 6 and 7.
The legs 6 and 7 are of an elongated form, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings, and have their lower ends provided with foot pieces 10, which are pivotally connected thereto. This pivotal connection of the foot pieces allows the foot piece to adjust itself to the ground as will be readily understood. The upper ends of the legs 6 and 7 extend above the boom 1, as is also clearly shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
Secured to the upper ends of the legs 6 and 7 are separate cables 8 and 9, which extend inwardly over a block 14-, carried by the mast adjacent its base, and said cables leading to the hoisting machinery 2. Secured to the legso and? below the boom are the cables 10 and 11, which extend horizontally and pass over a block 15 carried by the boom. The said cables extend inwardly and pass over the block carried by the lower end of the mast and are also operated by the machinery 2. While I have described these cables 8, 9, 10 and 11 as being operated by the hoisting machinery 2, it will be understood that the same can be operated by hand without departing from my invention.
The sleeve 5 is provided with an eye 16, in which is hooked the hook 17 carrying the block 18. Passing around the block 18 is a cable 19, which extends along the lower face of the boom and passes to the hoisting machinery 2 and is operated thereby. The said cable also passes around the block 20 carrying a hook 21, which is adapted to hook into the chain 22, which is fastened around the stump and forms the hoisting or pulling means for the stump.
In operation it will be seen that the skid or frame 1 is placed adjacent the stump to he removed. The boom t is then swung around in a position so that its outer end is in a vertical alinemcnt over the stump. The cables 8, 9, 10 and 11 are then operated so that the legs 6 and 7 are on opposite sides of the stump. The oscillating sleeve 5 carried by the boom allows one leg to move upwardly and the other downwardly should the'ground on one side of the stump be higher than that of the other, whereby the E jstump.

By the structure herein shown and described, it will be seen that the boom 4 and mast 3 may be made of much lighter mate rial and yet have a great lifting strength, as the legs (3 and 7 support the outer end of the boom. The legs 6 and 7 also prevent the pulling action on the cable 14 from tilting the skid or frame 1 by the pull on the stump.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A derrick comprising a frame, hoisting machinery carried by the frame, a boom pivotally mounted upon the frame, legs inclependently pivotally mounted upon the outer end of the boom and having an oscillating movement on the boom independent of their pivotal connection and means intermediate the legs for pulling a stump.
2. A derrick comprising a portable frame, hoisting machinery carried by the frame, a boom pivotally mounted upon the frame,

A derrick comprising a frame, hoisting machinery carried by the frame, a boom pivotally mounted upon the frame, means operated by the machinery for adjusting said boom, legs independently supported and having an oscillating connection with the boom adjacent its outer end, means for adjusting said legs, and means carried by the boom intermediate the legs for hoisting or pulling a stump.
5. A derrick comprising a frame, hoisting means carried by the frame, a boom pivotally mounted upon the frame, means carried by the frame for operating the boom, an oscillating sleeve carried by the outer end of the boom, legs loosely connected to said sleeve, means for adjusting said legs, and means carried by the boom intermediate the legs for hoisting or pulling a stump.
6. A derrick comprising a portable frame, hoisting machinery carried by the frame, a boom pivotally mounted upon the frame,
means carried by the frame for adjusting said boom, an oscillating sleeve mounted upon the outer end of the boom, two legs loosely connected'to said sleeve intermediate their ends, cablesoperated from the frame and connected to the legs below the boom,
to the outer end of the boom, an oscillating sleeve carried by the outer end of the boom and having eyes on opposite sides, legs on opposite sides of the boom and having eyes below their upper ends and interlocking with the eyes carried by the sleeve, cables secured to the upper end of the legs and operated by the hoisting machinery, cables secured to the legs below the eyes and operated by the hoisting machinery, an eye carried by the lower face of the sleeve, a block and tackle supported in the said eye, means carried by the lower end of the'block and tackle for connecting it with a stump, said block and tackle having its cable ex tending inwardly and operated by the hoisting machinery and pivoted feet carried by the lower end of the legs.
8. A derrick comprising a frame, a hoisting mechanism carried thereby, a boom mounted upon the frame, legs independently pivotally mounted upon the outer end of the boom and having an oscillating movement thereon, and means for adjusting its legs and means connected to the boom intermediate the legs for pulling a stump.
9. A derrick comprising a frame, a hoisting mechanism carried thereby, a boom mounted upon the frame, legs independently pivotally mounted upon the outer end of the boom and having an oscillating movement thereon, means for adjusting said legs and means connected to the boom intermediate the legs for pulling the stump.
10. A derrick comprising a frame, a hoisting mechanism carried by the frame, a boom pivotally mounted upon the frame, legs independently pivotally mounted upon the outer end of the boom and having an oscillating movement thereon, means for ad justing said legs, and a hoisting cable con nected to the boom intermediate the legs.
11. A derrick comprising a frame, a hoisting mechanism carried by the frame, a boom pivotally mounted upon the frame, legs flexibly connected to the boom adjacent its outer end, two independent cables connected to each leg above and below the boom for adjusting the same, and a hoisting cable carried by the boom intermediate the legs, substantially as shown and described.
