OF LEIPZIG- GERMANY.
PRINTING-COLORS.
R0 Drawing.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, LEOPOLD Sonfi'rzn, a subject of the German Emperor, and Ron- ERT FISCHER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and, residents, respectively, of Leipzig-Eutritzsch and Leipzig- Reudnitz, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Printing-Colors, of which the following is a 1 full, clear, and exact specification. Our invention relates to improved printing compositions and particularly to printing colors, which are especially suitable for that mode of printing which uses engraved printing surfaces. The colors hitherto proposedfor thispurpose sufi'er from several defects. In order to obtain comparatively great fluidity, which is necessary in particular cases, the color is mixed with a diluent; the latter is volatile whereby the uniformity of the color is affected. Moreover, the color. is apt toharden, the odor of the vapor of the diluent is objectionable and the vapor is injurious to health and dangerous by its intlammability. In addition to these objections the color is diflicult to remove satisfactorily by the doctor, that is to say it is not completely separated by the doctor from the unengra-ved portions. of the printing roller so that a smudged print is produced. A still further objection is inherent in many such colors, namely that they attack the parts of the machine. By the present invention all these objections are overcome by using a special vehicle for the color. This vehicle is made by digesting albumin which has been emulsified or dissolved by addition of alkali or an alkaline salt, with a sulfonated oil or a salt thereof;
" for-the better emulsification of the mixture as an ethereal oil. With this vehicle there may be mixed any of the colors or dyestutfs suitable for the work to be done} particularly organic dyestuffs and lakes'obtained therefrom; the color or dyestufi' or lake is best used in the formof a paste in order to insure satisfactory distribution in the vehicle. The
manufacture of the vehicle and its .mixture with the color or dyestufl may be combined into a single operation. The printing colors thus obtained which need not contain any volatile constltuent, are satisfactorily per-- have no objectionable odor and are not in Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May12, 1914., Application filed June 5, 191 3. SeriaLNo. 771,968. i
jurious to health. They are quite amenable to'doctoring so that the portion of the color which has-not entered the engraved lines of the printing roller can be completely re moved by the doctor and clear prints-be obtained. Moreover, the very fine distribution of the color particles and of the vehicle renders possible an essentially finer detail in the printing and the print neither runs nor bleeds. The printing rollers or plates are in no way injured or attacked by the colors. The capacity for dryingexhibited by the printing colors is good and at the same time they do not dry on the roller or plate when this is left at rest fora longperiod. The nature of the vehicle prevents the settling of the color. The printing colors goa long way in printing and are insoluble in water. By suitable selection of the dyestufis very various tints'may be obtained. Although the colors are particularly suitable for printing with engraved rollers or plates, it is obvious that by suitably varying the proportions, and therefore the consistence and concentration, the colors may be used for other modes of printing.
The following are examples of how a printing color may be made according to the invention.
Example 1: 125 grams of calcined sodiumcarbonate-are dissolved in 6 liters of water and 535 grams of albumin are introduced while stirring. To this mass are added 1 kilo 125 grams of sodium sulfuricinoleate and the mixture is furthed mixed with 500 grams of refined rosin oil or turpentine oil. To the vehicle thus prepared are added 9 kilos of a paste containing 30 per cent. of
the precipitate formed from naphthol blackand barium chlorid, and the whole is ground in a color mill. The color paste may be mixed in before the addition of sodium sulfuricinoleate.
Example 2: Instead of the solution of 125,
the precipitate formed from naphthol black, naphthol yellow and barium chlorid is used. The other steps are the same as in Example 1 or 2.
Example 4: 150 grams of calcined sodium carbonate are dissolved in 5 liters of water and 500 grams of albumin are introduced While stirring. To this mass are added 1 kilo 125 grants of sodium sulfuricinoleate. To the vehicle thus prepared kilos of a paste containing per cent. of the precipitate from naphthol black and barium chlori'd are added, and the whole is ground in a color mill.
