Description

Letters Patent No. 109,61/0, dated November 29, 1870 ;I antedated November 2li, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PQLlSHlNAG-MACHINES.
y'.lhe Schedule referred to in these Letters. Patent and making parl: of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN GOODEN, et'v Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of lNew York,I have' invented a new and improved Expansion Poly ishing-Machiue; and I do hereby declare that the fol- Figure l represents a face view, partly in section,
of my improved polishing-machine.
Figure 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
of dit'erent sizes, and has for its object to allow of anl equal expansion and contraction ofthe polishing blocks for the purpose of accommodating the same to cylinders of different diameters.
The invention consists chiefly in the application of a sleeve tted upon the shaft on which the device is hung, said sleeve operating the contracting and expanding devices independent of the action 'of the shaft.
Theinvention also consists in the general combination of the expanding blocks with their hollow shanlis, adjusting screws, and bevel pinions, and with the adjusting sleeve, all arranged and operating as hereinaft-er described.
.A in the drawing represents the shaft for supporting my impro ved polishing-machine.
Upon itis fitted a loose sleeve, B, which carries a hand-wheel, a, atI one end, and a bevel gear-wheel, b, at the other end,
C and D are two plates, made ofA cast-iron or other suitable material, and fitted around the shaft and sleeve as shown. llhc plate C lits loose around the sleeve B, vand is recessed to receive the wheel b.v v
The plate D is ttcd around the shaft'. in front l of the plate C. f
The front end ofthe shaft has a screw-thread. tov
This invention relates to afnewmachine for polishl ing the inner surfaces ot' metallic and other-cylinders receive a nut',`c, which clamps the plate D against a shoulder', d, of the shaft, said shoulder heilig sunk int-o'the inner side of D. and partly into C, as. shown.
In` the contiguous faces of the plates OD ale formed recesses to receive .polygonal nuts E E, that can slide therein7 and that carryat their outer ends, y
outside of the plates C D, Banged plates F.r
The plates F hold the polishing-bloeks Gr,- which have the polishing surfaces formed on them, either. directly, being vulcanite 'emory blocks, or by sandpaper sheets, c. rl.he nuts E receive screws, H H, that have their ends lit-ted loosely intothe shoulder-cl, and that carry bevel pinions I, which mesh into the wheel b..
.When the plates C D are,.`by means of screws, f j, firmly secured together, the device is ready for operation. l
The sleeve when turned will by its gear-connection turn the screws H, and 'thereby move the nuts, with their appendages, further in or out, as may dcsired. Y l
. The polishing surfaces are thereby adjusted lo larger or smaller cylinders.
1n place of thev gear-connection heieindescribed, the sleeve may screw directly into a conical block, which, as it is adjustedV longitudinally on the shaft, will draw thepoltshingfblocks in orpus'h .them out vat will.
Having thus described -my invention,
What I claim as new, and desireto secure by L et'- ters Patent, isl l. The sleeve 1 3, fitted loose upon the shaft A, and arranged to adjust the polishing-blocks G, for larger or smaller cylinders, substantially ashe'reiu shown and described. l
.2.' rlhe combination of the expansion-blocks G, with the sliding nuts E, screws H, wheels I b, sleeve B, and shaft, allarranged and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
v lJOHN GOUDEN.
