5 invented certam'new and useful Improvements in Gas Washers or- Scrubbers, of
which the followingis a specification.
The object of this invention is to con struct a gas washer or scrubber whereby a more .eflicient washing or scrubbing of the gas is effected with a smaller quantity of liquid than is now the case.
My invention will be clearly understood irom the following description aided by the annexed drawings in which :T-
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a complete apparatus. Fig. 2 is a section on line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line Z1 b,
of Fig. 1. Fig. i is a section on line 0 o of Fig. 1.
For the purpose of my invention 1 construct the apparatus in the form of a round tower or column having several superposed compartments 1, the floor 2 of each being provided with a central opening 3 having a wall 4 around. same. Down through the o enings 3 .in the floors 2, I pass a vertical 5 aft 5 which carries the agitators or beating appliances which are constructed as hereafter described, and such shaft 5 is held in bearin s (i at top and bottom of the apparatus. These agitators or beating app iances are each constructed with a top plate 7 which fits around the shaft and is secured thereto and with two or more other plates 8 preferably of the same diameter but having central holes 9 with flanges or walls 10 upstanding from their inner edges,
\Qthe plates 8 being secured to the top plate 40 7 and below same by distancing pieces 11.
On-the upper sides of the plates I secure angled rings 12 or walls concentrically curved or otherwise arranged-and on the underside of the plates except the bottom one, I also secure angled rings. 13 or walls correspondingly arranged but with edges below the edges of the rings 12 on the upper 'sides of the plates.
on the upper side of each top plate 7 and on the underside of the floors 2 of the com-- partments I arrange angled strips 1 2 which dip below and between the edges of the aforesaid rings on the top plates. On each bottom plate I provide an annular lip 15 which surrounds the wall 4. of the hole 3 in the floor 2' and on each plate except the top Between the rings 12 plate I pqovide two or more bent pipes 16, 17 whic lead into the troughs formed between the upstandin flanges 10 and the first or innermost ang ed rings 12.
I employ one of these agitators or heaters in each com artment 1 and fix same to the vertical sha t 5 so that they can be revolved by the pulley 18. The top and bottom compartments do not contain an agitator and the opening 3 of the bottom compartment is made in the form of a stufiing box l9 which encircles the shaft 5 and forms a tight joint thereat to prevent escape of gas.
20 are valves in branch pipes 21 connecting each compartment with a pipe 22 for running off the liquid in the bottoms of the .compartments when desired, such pipe 22 being in cormeotion with the draw oli pipe 23 of the bottom chamber which is connected with the outflow pipe by a seal pipe 24.
25 are radial vanes positioned in the bottoms of the compartments to prevent swirling of the Water.
The gas to be washed or scrubbed is passed into the bottom of the tower at 26 and the water to clean or wash same is passed in at the top compartment of the tower by the seal pipe 27, the wall 4 on the floor of each compartment retaining some of the water therein and forming a weir for the transfer of the water from one compartment to the other. The water in each compartment is also lifted into the troughs of the agitators while the apparatus is at work so that the water before finally leaving the apparatus is acted upon by the gas many times whereby the water becomes thoroughly impregnated.
The agitators or heaters are revolved at considerable speed and the water overflowing from the wall 1- of one compartment into the nest below falls on to the top plate 7 within the central angled ring and at the same time the water in each compartment is being driven up the respective bent pipes 16, li into the central trough. The centrifugal action causes this water to spread outward, ride upthe angled sides of the rings 12 and strike the depending angled strips and rings 14. on the underside of the floors and plates where it will be diverted into or.
twhereit trickles down onto the floor to be the I the m e WKWZIL nci ion thoroughly in fine spiny, and the r o in or bottom. toihe top o he up ;un'uti1e posses up iiiurouc'h the confirm holes 9 in tit-e lower piatcs and then zig f ihsrough ilul-Wfifln the plains-. and 0V2? the top plate to no next conipul'hncnt :2 11d on *o the of no appmrutus where it is passed away by the outlet 28 to the purifiers. the gas in passing through the spray becoming icnorougifl washed or cleansed. Any numbc' of corn partm'cuts and agitators may be employed. in one apparatus according to the ax'nount of gas to be treated.
Py this-in'vcntioi I am coostantiy' using the Water in each cornparminent over over again so that it becomes efi'iciel'i'tly iainpregneied and she supply to each comnu'tmcnt due to the overflow ufi Weire is dctermimu'l by the amount of supply at the top of the apparatus 1. In niwoshing apparatus, the combine; tion, with n casing contnii'iing a pilurcaiisiy of superposed, communicating compm qxnon'bs, and means for suppiying' thereto file substance to be washed and the Washing me dium; of an agitator arranged in each compartment and comprising a plurality of horizontal supports connccizefl together in spaced ".Hei reunion and provide 9 each, vow av nCiWS of comreutrlc, angled rings;
