Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it knownthat LJOSE H F. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Gordon, in the county of Palo Pinto and State of Texas have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide simple, reliable and eflicient means for sliding a gate suspended upon rollers and mounted on a track.
Another object of the invention-is to simplify the construction of closing the gate which shall operate smoothly and which is not liable to get out of order.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a suspended sliding gate which can be either opened or closed from either side of the gate by pulling upon an operating cord.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the gate made in accordance with my invention and shown in closed position; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the operating lever; and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the gate shown in its opened position.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 are the upright posts connected together by a cross beam 2 and 3 is the roadway, while the space 4 at the left of the roadway may be provided with ordinary fencing at one side of the upright posts 1. At a point centrally between the posts 1 are short gate posts 5 disposed upon opposite sides of the gate. Secured to the cross beam 2 and suitably spaced therefrom is a supporting rail 6. This rail is oppositely inclined at its upper edge, the ends 7 and the center 8 of the rail being narrower than the intermediate portions 9,the purpose being to slightly raise the gate as it is moved and permit it to drop into the two positions opened and closed.
The gate may be of any desired construction. As shown the two vertical side members 10 are preferably of metal and provided at their upper ends with bent over portions 11 and journaled in said bent over portions are grooved rollers 12 adapted to run on the track 6 and to suspend the gate from said 5 track. Cross bars 13 and 14 connect the two vertical members 10 and suitable braces 15 extend from the members 10 to the lower cross bar 14. Secured to the cross bar 14 is the lower member or'bottom 16 of the gate, this bottom being of suffic'ient weight to com pel the gate to drop by gravity when operated. Vertical guide bars 17 suitably spaced apart are secured centrally to the cross bars 13 and 14.
The operating lever comprises two diverging arms 18 having outwardly extending trunnions 19. As shown; this operating lever is composed of a metal rod of suitable gage bent atthe point to form the two members 18 and the trunnions 19. Mounted centrally at the point 20 between the members 18 are spaced disks 21. The trunnions 19 are pivoted in suitable eye bolts 22 secured to the spaced posts 5. The point 20 of the lever is disposed between the two guide bars 17 and the disks 21 are disposed upon opposite sides of said guide bars. Pivotally connected to each of the members 18 of the lever is a T-shaped lever 23, said levers being each pivoted at 24 and provided with oppositely extending arms 25 said arms 25 each having a right angularly projecting finger 26 disposed upon opposite sides of the member 18. Pivoted at 27 to each member 18 is a trigger 28 having oppositely disposed hooks 29. Stop lugs 30 upon opposite sides of the trigger 28 serve to limit the pivotal movement of said trigger.
Connected to each lever 23 is an operating wire or cord 31 which is passed over a double roller 32 j ournaled in a bar 33 extending at right angles to the cross beam 2. Connected to each of the wires or cords 31 is a branch wire or cord 34 which extends over the roller 32 and around a pulley 35. At the depending end of the cord is a hand hold 36. The cord or wire 31 extends over the pulleys 37 and 38 and is provided at the depending end with a hand hold 39.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: Then the gate is closed, as shown in Fig. 1 and a pull is exerted downward on either of the hand holds 36 or 39, the lever 18 is lifted owing to the fact that one of the fingers 26 on the lever 23 is engaged with one of the hooks 29 of the trigger while the other finger 26 extends across over the member 18. When the lever 18 is lifted a certain distance with the point 20 between the bars 17, the cord 31 will assume a position at the right hand side of the pivot 24 of the lever 23. The point describes nearly a semi-circular movement and the gate is moved on the rail 6 from its closed position to the opened position shown in Fig. 4 at which time the lever 23 has shifted its position to engage the opposite hook 29 with its opposite finger 26 so that another pull'upon either of the hand holds 36 or 39 Will shift the gate to the original position. Thus it Will be seen that the gate may be opened or closed from either'side by pulling on either of the hand holds 36 or 89. In this embodiment of my invention I have shown only one operating lever 23 but should it be desired at any time, it is to be understood that I may use the operating mechanism on both sides Without in any Way departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the appended claim.
From the foregoing it Wlll be obvious that my invention is comparatively simple in guide bars, a'trigger pivoted to said operating lever and provided with hooks, a T- shaped lever pivoted to said operating lever,
said 'Tshaped lever providedWithlugs for engaging the hooks on said trigger and an operating cord connected 'to' said 'T-shaped lever forshifting' the position of the operating lever and operating the gate.

Johnson, jointly, said Johnson being assignee of one-half interest only, in said invention, as shown by the records of assignments in this office, and the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Otfiee.
