Be it known that I, \VALTER P. MURPHY, a ('ltlZQll of the United Eatates, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Release-Rigging, of which. the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a release riggingfor car couplers, comprising a rock shaft which is flexibly connected at its inner end with the locking pin and is provided with a lever intermediate .its ends extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, from which is bodily suspended an operatinghandle, whereby the .shaft may he rotated and the locking pin operated when the handle is pushed-bodily downward or is moved in an arc; and with this and other objects in View, my invention consists of the parts and combination of parts as Twill be hereinafter pointed out.

Referring to Figsd and 5 t e reference numeral 17 designates the rock shaft of the release rigging suitably mounted on the car by means of the brackets 18. This lever is provided, intermediate its ends, with a lever 19, of the box type,,extending upwardly therefrom, toward the car, at an acuteangle. 19 'is an operatinghandle, the upper" end of which is rebent'to form an. eye 20 which is disposed around the upper end of,
the lever 19 as more clearlyshown in Fig. 5, whereby the handle is suspended bodily from said lever between the rock shaft and the car. The lower, end of the handle 19 terminates in an outwardly extending crank '21, which, normally,'lies in a plane below the plane of the underface of the 'car in which position it may be easily operated by the brakeman from the road bed'or from the car.
In Fig.6 I have shown' another embodishaft- 22 is brokenaway. The rock shaft 22 is provided, intermediate its ends, with a lever 23 which extends therefrom .rear-' wardly and upwardly toward the car body. This lever 23' is formed-by closed return bend of the shaft, the portions 24 abutting and constituting a fulcrum. when the operating handle is operated as alever of the first order as will he hereinafter explained. The operating handle 23 terminates at its upper end in a return bend to form an eye 26 which engages the lever 23, as shown, the lower ment of my invention in which the rock end of the handle terminating in'an out.-

In Fig. 7 the'rock shaft 28 is shown broken away. The rock shaft 28 is provided,

From the above description it Will be seen that a bi'akeinan standing on the usual side step of a car may operate. the locking pin of the coupler by pressing downward with his foot on the crank of the opera ing handle thus pushing the handle downward hodily in :t' vertical plane thus, through the lever on the rock shai't, (whieh operatesias a crank) rotate the reek sha t and operate the locking pin of the ('(lllpitl.
Then standing on the road hed beside the car, the brakeinan may pull en the. crank of the operating handle and swing said handle in an axe. whereupon the handle,
near its upper end, is brought into eontaet with the lock shaftand said shaft .stn'ee as dle becomes a lever of the first order, and rotates the shaft thereby operating the locking pm of the coupler.
