To all 'whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known'that I, WILLIAM S. HADAWAY, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in thescounty of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric-Resistance Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had` to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specifica-4 which my invention may assume in practice.
My invention, however, is not limited to this forml but may assume other forms.
In the views of these drawings z-Figure 1 shows a side elevation of one form of heater. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of one of the heating unitsxwith a portion of the casing broken away. Fig. 3 shows a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a sectional view on line a-#I of Fig. 3.
In the construction used for Vpurposes of illustration, I have shown a plurality of heating units l having their ends attached to suitable rods or bolts 2;.the heating units l, of a construction hereinafter described, being arranged in series and provided with terminal clips 3, arranged to receive the ends of suitable conductors. p
The heating units 1 are in a preferred form constructed as shown in Fig. 2, vwherein a slotted resistance material 4 is inclosed between sheets of insulation 5. If desired, 'I may use mica as this insulation. The sheets of insulation and the inclosed resistance material are in turn inclosed within an vouter channel member 6, preferably formed of stamped sheet metal, and a top plate 7 preferably of the' same material, is placed over the same. The parts are preferably held together and compressed by bending over the edges 8 ofthe channel 6 ii order to clamp the same snugly upon the p ate 7 The units l are preferably attached to the standards or rods 2 in such a manner as to form a frame. In a preferred form, the ends of the channels 6 and the top plates 'i' are provided with extensions 9 and 10 as shown in Fig. 1 which are in the form of shoulders. These shoulders are preferably provided with perforations through which the frame rods 2 may be passed and, in a preferredform, the adjacentv units are separated or spaced from each other by one or more sleeves l1 which inclose the frame rods 2. The circuit connections for the units may obviously be arranged in various different. ways so that the units may be connectedeither in series or parallel, if desired, and any number ofunits may be used.
In` the construction shown in Fig. l, I have illustrated the resistance units 1 arranged in series, a compressible terminal clip 3 being attached to each of the outside units and arranged to receive the end of a suitable lead. In order that such a, connection may be made, I preferably provide each strip of resistance material 4L with an integral unslotted extension 12 at each of its ends. If. desired, however, this may be a separate strip held in position by the clamping of the parts or otherwise. This extension 12 preferably is narrower than the body of the strip and is preferably passed through a suitable slot 13 in the sheets of insulation 5 and then passed through a larger slot 14 in the top plate 7. Obviously the construction and arrangement of these slots may be varied if desired. After passing through jacent extensions 12 are preferably brought' together on insulating washers 15 carried upon the rods 2. In a preferred form, these washers 15 are made in two parts as shown in Fig. 3 so that the ends lof the resistance material may be perforated and fitted over the ends of the same as therein shown, and that a snug contact may be made between the ends, These washers, however, may be of any desired construction. The washers are also preferably spaced between the extensions 9 and l0 on the casings `1 by certain of the sleeves similar to the sleeves 11 which in this case are shorter than the sleeves spacing apart the opposite ends of the same units. In the series arrangement of units shown for purposes of illustration, it is obvious that a conductor may be connected to the upper end of the left hand unit and that the other conductor may be' connected to the upper end of the right hand unit, although' the manner of connecting these various units may be varied. In a preferred form, the units, their spacing means and their'electrical connections are held snugly together on the rods 2 by .suitable taps 16.
If desired, the'rods and the resistance units or heating units carried between them may be mounted in any suitable support so that the device may be used either as a heating means, as, .for instance, a radiator, or as an electric resistance unit. Due-to the large heat radiating capacity of the several units, a very effective radiator may be provided. On the other hand, the units possess a high resistance which well adapts them to use as resistance elements for controlling or other purposes.
- By my improved construction and arrangement of the heat-ing units, I have provided an exceedingly simple and convenient means for connecting and assembling the units in gang form. The electrical connecting parts are effectually insulated so that there is no danger of short circuit-ing. Further, the parts are so attached to each other that the whole device is exceedingly sturdyr and well adapted to withstand long use in service. Further, the construction is an exceedingly simple one which may be readily manufactured and assembled at small expense.
While I have in this application described one specific form which my invention may `4assume in practice I do not wish to be limited to this specific form, chosen for purposes of illustration, but wish rather to include within the scope of this application all of those forms of my invention falling within its spirit.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent'is l. In an electric'resistance unit, a casing having slots in its opposite ends and on opposite sides thereof, and a strip of resistance material inclosed therein and insulated therefrom, said strip having-extensions protruding through said slots and insulated from the walls thereof.
2. In an electric resistance unit, a strip of slotted resistance material having an integral extension of reduced width disposed at right angles to the slots therein, a plurality of sheets of insulation inclosing the same, one of said sheets having a slot in its end through which said extension protrudes,
y and a casing member having a slot therein opposite the slot in said sheet of insulation. 3. In an electric resistance unit, a strip of slotted resistance material having an integral extension of reduced width disposed at right angles to the slots therein, a plurality of sheets of insulation inclosing the same, one of said sheets having a slot in its end through which said extension protrudes,
and a casing member having a slot therein opposite the slot in said sheet of insulation but'of greater width and length.
4. In an electric unit, ay metallic casing having slots in its opposite ends, sheets of insulation inclosed in said casing, said sheets having slots/fof smaller size opposite the slots in said casing, and a resistance material inclosed between said sheets of insulation and having extensions protruding through the slots in said insulating material and said casing.
5. In an electric resistance unit, a metallic casing having perforated lugs on its ends and transversely disposed slots in opposite sides of the same near its opposite ends, and a resistance material inclosed in said casing and insulated therefrom, said resistance material having perforated extensions protruding through the slots in said casing and a plurality of supporting members extending through the perforations in said lugs and said extensions.
6. In an electric resistance unit, a metallic casing comprising a channel member and a holding plate held in position thereon by theroverturned side members of said channel member, said channel member and holding plate being provided on their opposite ends with integral projections, a sheet of resistance material inclosed in said casing, and sheets of insulation therefor, said sheets of resistance material and of insulating material being of less length than the channel and holding plate and the integral projections on the latter beingcompressed upon each other.
7. In an electric resistance unit, a plurality of boxed grids disposed in parallel relation, a plurality of strips of resistance material inclosed therein having their ends protruding through openings in the sides Y thereof, a plurality of supporting members extending through openings in the ends of said grids,'and terminal members for said grids carried upon' said supports between the grids and each connectedto the protruding ends of the resistance material of two adjacent grids.
8. In an electric resistance unit, a plurality of metallic casings having openings in their ends and slots therein intermediate their ends and on opposite sides thereof, a plurality of strips of resistance material inclosed in said casings `and insulated therefrom, said strips of resistance material having extensions protruding through said slots, supporting rods protruding through the openings in said casings and fixed to the incassi latter, and terminal members carried on said rods clamping together. the adjacent ends of said resistance material.
9. In an electric resistance unit,- a plurality of rigid metallic casings having slots in their opposite sides and at their opposite ends, a plurality of strips of insulating material inclosed in said casings and having slots therein opposite the slots in said casings but of smaller size, a plurality of strips of resistance material inclosed between said sheets of insulation and having portions thereof protrudinfr` through said slots, a plurality of paraIlei supports extending through openings in the ends of said casings adjacent said slots, and a plurality oit terminal members carried on said supports between said casings, said terminal members connecting the adjacent ends of 'the resistance material protruding from said slots.
10. In an electric resistance unit, a plurality of threaded rods, a plurality of rigid casings disposed at right angles with respect thereto and spaced apart from each other,
said casings having openings in their ends through which said rods extend, strips of resistance material inclosed in said casings and insulated therefrom, said strips of resistance material having extensions protruding from said casings at opposite ends of the same, separable clamping collars carried on said rods forl clamping together adjacent ends of said strips of resistance material, means for spacing said clamping collars from the ends of said casings, means for spacing said casings from each other, and means for holding the parts together to form a rigid unitaryv frame.
