To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM O. Enennne, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, county of Salt Lake, and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making lVindow-Shades, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to automatic stop mechanism of window shade machines such as disclosed in my Patent No. 883,795, dated April 7, 1908.
The primary object of the invention is to provide simple and eflicient means whereby the length of the shade to be made may be accurately measured, and when the proper length has been wound upon the shade roller the machine will be automatically stopped, thus avoiding the necessity for watching a separate measuring device for each independent shade and which particularly adapts the machine for use where a number of shades of the same length are to be made.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide simple means operatively connected to the feed and which will be automatically actuated to apply a brake and thereby stop the machine; and to provide means whereby the stop mechanism may be quickly restored to its starting position.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the automatic stop may be thrown out of operative connection with the rest of the -machine, and to provide means whereby the stop may be released at will by manual means.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of one form of machine with the invention applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the automatic stop mechanism.
The frame 10 may have the shade material 11 suitably supported thereon and this shade material pasess around a feed roll 12 and between a smaller feed roll 13, and after passing between the feed rolls 12 and 13 has its edges trimmed by the cutters 14:, a set of Specification of Letters Patent.

which may be located at each side of the machine and are adapted to trim the shade material lengthwise thereof. The material is carried forward and is fastened by tacks or otherwise to a shade roller 15 which is adapted to be rotatably held in brackets or supporting means 16. The shade material is cut transversely thereof by a knife, as 17, and this knife is held to slide in the groove of a transversely-extending bar 18, and adjacent to the knife 17 is the loopforming mechanism 19. This mechanism may comprise two blades 20 and 21 which are adapted to force the material into the grooves 22 and 23 respectively, of the creasing device forming a part of the loop-forming mechanism, so that the shade material may be creased transversely thereof at two distinct points to form the shade-slat loop. The upper shaft 24 of the cutters 1 1 may have an operating wheel 25 held thereto, and the shaft 24 may be connected to the shaft of the feed roll 12 by a sprocket chain or gear so as to positively drive the larger fed roll to feed the shade material properly through the machine. The parts thus far described are the same and operate in a similar manner to that disclosed in the patent hereinbefore referred to and may be of any suitable construction.
To measure the shade and to automatically stop the machine when the proper length of material has been wound upon the shade roller according to the length of the shade to be made, I provide a gear 26, Fig. 2, on the end of the shaft of the feed roll 12, and this gear is in mesh with a gear 27 on the shaft 28. The gear 27 is normally held in mesh with the gear 26, and held to rotate with said gear 27 is a sprocket wheel 29 secured to the shaft 28, and passing around the sprocket wheel 29 is a chain 30. This chain 30 extends vertically at the rear of the ma chine and on one side thereof, and at its lower end passes around a sprocket wheel 31 arranged on a stud 32. An engaging member or block 33 is secured to the sprocketchain or other connection 30, and this engaging member has a part or projection 34 which is guided in its vertical movement on a rod 35, the said rod being held at its lower end in a bracket 36 and at its upper end in a bracket 37 located in the frame 10. The
rod 35 has a graduated bar 37 secured thereto to indicate feet or parts thereof as desired, and adjacent to the rod is a movable rod which may also be graduated if desired, and secured to said rod is a stop or element which guided at one end, as at 4:0. and at its other end may be adjustably held to the rod 38 by means of a clamping screw ll or in any other desired way. This rod 36 is guided at its upper end in the bracket 87 and at its lower end in a bracket t2 and held to move with the rod 38, as by a block is a vertically extending rod i l. The rod d-i held to one arm of a lever l?) which is pivoted at 4:6 to the machine frame, and said lever is normally forced in one direction by a spring 4-7 tending to force the rod i ldownward, and the other end of said lever is provided with a head or engaging part 48 which is adapted, when forced to the position shown in dotted lines, to engage the roller t9 carried by a pivotally held bar or lever 50. The lever 50 is pivoted at 51 to a bar or bracket and said lever 50 is pro vided with links or guiding parts 53, having a slotted connection with a bracket 52 to adapt the lever or bar 50 to be moved on its pivot, and said bar or lever 50 is provided with a notch or tooth at which is adapted to be engaged by a pawl or dog 55 held to the operating lever 56. The lever 56 is provided with a handle 57 at one end and is pivoted at 56 to the machine frame, and said lever is normally forced upward by a spring and carries a brake bar or element 60, the latter being provided with a shoe or engaging part 61 adapted to engage the periphery of the operating wheel The wheel 25 is provided with a handle 62 to operate the same manually or may be operated by power through a belt or chain 63 passing about a pulley G l rotatably held on the lever 56, the latter being driven by a motor or otherwise as desired.
t will be seen that when the machine is operated to make the shade. the shaft of the feed roll 12 will operate the gear 26 and through said gear, the gear 27 of the shaft 28 will impart movement to the sprocket chain or element 36. T his will carry the device 33 until it reaches the stop l0. As soon as the stop 4L0 is engaged and the rods and 44c moved vertically, as shown in dotted lines, the lever 4-5 will be moved on its pivot 46 and cause the end -18 to shift the locking bar or lever on its pivot to release the dog from the notch or tooth When the dog is released, the spring 59 will force the lever upward and will cause the shoe 61 of the brake element to engage the wheel and thereby stop the machine, the slack of the belt 63 permitting the pulley 6% to rotate independently thereof if the machine is operated by power, though instead of the brake element and wheel 25, a clutch roeaeae may be operated to discminect the power and stop the machine.
lhe loop-formin blades 26 and 21 operated by the treadle 65 as in the patent already referred to, and movable with the treadle 65 is a weight 66 which carries a pin or projection 67. This projection 67 moves upward, as shown in dotted lines, v-xhen the treadle is forced down to form the shade-slat loop, and. in doing so will engage the beveled end 68 of the lever 69. This lever 69 is pivoted at 76 to a lug or bracket 71 projecting outward from the frame and at the upper end of said lever is an arm 79 which carries the shaft 28, the said shaft and arm 72 being normally forced inward by a spring 73, tending normally to keep the gears 26 and 27 in mesh. The treadle in its downward movement will cause the projection or pin 67 to engage the lever 69 and force the lower end inward and this will cause the bracket 72 at the upper end thereof to move outward and dis-- engage the gear 2? from the gear 26, and as the sprocket chain will then be free to move, the weight of the device will be sufficient to return the chain and device to its starting position. By this means a part of the automatic stop is restored to its nor nal position by the action of the trcadle as it is depressed to make the loop for the shadeslat.
T he bar or lever 50 may be operated by hand to stop the machine, independent of the position of the device and stop 46. As shown the outer end of the lever 50 is connected to a rod '41 and this rod is held to the lever 75, carried by the lever so that by releasing the lever 75 by the lingers, the lever 50 may have its tooth 5i disengaged from the pawl so that the spring 59 will cause the brake element 60 to engage the wheel 27 as already explained.
In case it is desired to operate the machine independent of the stop mechanism, I may provide a rod 76, and at one end therein: arrange handle 77, and its other end connect the same to a link or lever T8. This lever 78 is pivoted at 79 to the lever 69 and has one end held to the rod 76, and its other Qllt as 80, adapted to engage the end of the machine frame so that by pushing the rod 7 6 inward, the end 80 will engage the frame and by Ifl'iltllGl' movement will force the upper end of the lever 69 outward so as to disengage the gear QTfi-om the gear 26. The rod may be provided with a pin or other means adapted to engage a part of the frame so that a slight rotary motion of the rod will lock the gear 2? disengaged from the gear 26.
l rom the foregoing it will be seen that simple and etlicient means is provided whereby a brake may be automatically applied to a part of the operating mechanism when the mechanism has its shade of the proper length has been made; that simple means is provided whereby the brake may be released to permit the machine to be started; that simple mechanism is provided whereby the power applied to operate the machine may be disengaged or placed in an inoperative condition, that simple means is provided whereby the length of shade may be quickly and accurately measured; that part of said mechanism may be automatically restored to its normal position by the movement of the means forming the shadeslat loop, and that simple means is provided whereby the machine may be operated with or independent of the stop mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a window shade machine, the combination with means for supporting shade material, of feed mechanism, means for forming a shade-slat loop, an engaging member movable with the feed mechanism, an operating lever, brake mechanism movable with the said lever to stop the machine, and means operated by contact of said engaging member therewith whereby the operating lever is caused to move and actuate the stopping means.
2. In a window shade machine, the combination with means for supporting shade material, of feed mechanism, an engaging member movable with the feed mechanism, an operating lever, brake mechanism movable with the said lever to stop the machine, and means operated by contact of said engaging member therewith whereby the operating lever is caused to move and actuate the stopping means.
3. In a window shade machine, the combination with means for supporting shade material, of feed mechanism, an engaging member movable with the feed mechanism, brake mechanism to stop the machine, and means operated by contact therewith of the engaging member to actuate the stopping means.
4. The combination with means for supporting shade material, of feeding means. an engaging member movable with said feeding means, and brake mechanism oper-- ated by contact with said engaging member to stop the machine.
5. The combination with feeding means, and means for forming a shade-slat loop, of a chain, means connected to the feeding means for moving the chain as the machine is operated, an engaging member carried by the chain, a movable stop adapted to be engaged by the engaging member, a lever, means operated by the lever to stop the machine, and means operatively connected to the stop whereby the lever may be moved to apply the machine stopping means.
6. The combination with means for forming a shade-slat loop, of feeding means, a chain connected to operate with the feeding means, means for operating the chain as the machine is operated, stopping mechanism, a device carried by the chain, a movable stop adapted to be engaged by the device, a brake, means for holding the brake disengaged, means for forcing the brake in position to stop the machine, and means operatively connected to the device to release the brake and stop the machine.
7. The combination with means for sup porting shade material, of feeding means, a chain connected to the feeding means, means for moving the chain, a device carried by the chain, a stop adapted to be engaged by the device, and means whereby the stop when moved may be caused to stop the machine.
8. The combination with means for supporting shade material, of feeding means, a chain connected to the feeding means, means for moving the chain, stopping mechanism, and means operatively connected to the chain and said mechanism to stop the machine at a determined point.
9. The combination with means for forming a shade-slat loop, of a feed roll, a gear in mesh with the feed roll, a second gear in mesh therewith, a sprocket movable with the second gear, a sprocket chain passing around the same, means for disengaging the gear, and means operated by the chain for stopping the machine.
10. The combination with means for forming a shadeslat loop, of a feed roll, a gear in mesh with the feed roll, a second gear in mesh therewith, a sprocket movable with the second gear, a sprocket chain passing around the same, and means operated by the chain for stopping the machine.
11. The combination with means for form ing a shade-slat loop, of a feed {roll, a sprocket movable with the feed roll, a chain passing around the same, and means operated by the chain for stopping the ma chine.
12. The combination with means for feeding shade material, of means for forming a shade-slat loop, a wheel, means whereby the wheel may be rotated with the feeding means, a brake element, an operating lever, and connections between the feeding means, and the operating lever whereby the brake may be applied to said wheel.
13. The combination with means for supporting shade material, of feed mechanism, an engaging member carried by said feed mechanism and movable therewith, a brake mechanism operated by contact with said ongaging member to stop the machine.
14. The combination with feed rolls, of a chain movable with one of the feed rolls, an engaging member movable with the chain, a normally fixed rod serving to guide said engaging member, a measuring bar connect ed to said rod, a stop, a second rod to which the stop is adjustably held and adapted to he moved by the chain, a lever, a spring normally forcing the lever in one direction, a rod connecting the lever to the last-mentioned rod to move therewith, an operating lover, a brake element carried by said operating lever, and means whereby the opcrating lever and the brake element may be operated when the first-mentioned lever is moved by said engaging member and thereby stop the machine.

The combination with feed rolls and means for forming a shade-slat loop, of a chain movable with one of the feed rolls, an engaging member movable with the chain, a normally fixed rod serving to guide said engaging member, a measuring bar connected to said rod, a stop, and means operated when the stop is moved to stop the machine.

The combination with feed rolls and means for forming a shade-slatloop, of a chain movable with one of the feed rolls, an engaging member movable with the chain, a normally fixed rod serving to guide said engagin member, a measuring bar connected to said rod, means adjustablealong said measuring bar and moved by said engaging member to determine the length of shade to be made, and means whereby the machine may be stopped.

The combination with feed rolls and means for forming a shade-slat loop, of a chain, an engaging member movable with the chain, a normally fixed rod serving to guide said engaging member, a measuring bar connected to said rod, a stop, a second rod to which the stop is adjustably held and adapted to be moved by the chain, a lever, a spring normally forcing the lever in one direction, a rod connecting the lever to the last-mentioned rod to move therewith, a brake element, and means whereby the brake element may be made to stop the machine when the lever is moved.

The combination with means for supporting shade material, of feeding means, a brake element, an operating lover, a spring normally forcing the operating lever in one direction, a rotary element adapted to be engaged by the brake element, a pivotally held lever, a bracket to which the lever is pivoted, a dog carried by the operating lever and adapted to engage the pivoted lever, a lever adapted to engage the first-mentioned lever to release the same from the dog to permit the brake element to be applied, and means for operating the last-mentioned lever when the proper length of shade has been made.

The combination with means for support-ing shade material, of feeding means, a brake element adapted to stop the machine, a pivotally held lever, a bracket to which the lever is pivoted, said lever having a notch, a dog adapted to engage said notch. a spring normally forcing the lever in one direction, a lever adapted to engage the first-mentioned lever to release the same from the dog to permit the brake element to be applied, and means for operating the last-mentioned lever when the proper length of shade has been made.

The combination with means for sup porting shade material, of feed rolls, a brake element adapted to stop the machine, a pivotally held lever, a bracket to which the lever is pivoted, said lever having a notch, a dog adapted to engage said notch, and means for releasing the dog to cause the brake to stop the machine.

The combination with feed rolls, of means for forming a shade-slat loop, an en'- gaging member movable with the feed rolls, a stop arranged in the path of said engaging member, a rod movable with the stop, a lever, a rod connecting the lastmentioned rod to the lever, a spring normally forcing the lever in one direction, an operating ating lever in one direction, means operated by the operating lever to stop the machine, means for holding the operating lever against the action of the spring, and means for releasing the operating lever when the stop is operated.

The combination with means for forming a shade-slat loop, of a movable engaging member, astop arranged in the path of said engaging member, a rod movable with the stop, a lever, a rod connecting the last-mentioned rod to the lever, an operating lever, means operated by the operating lever to stop the machine, means for holding the operating lever, and means for releasing the operating lever.

The combination with feeding means, of an engaging member movable with the feeding means, a stop arranged in the path of said engaging member, a rod movable with the stop, a lever, a rod connecting the last-mentioned rod to the lever, a spring normally forcing the lever in one direction, a brake element adapted to stop the machine, and means whereby when the lever is operated the brake element will be applied.

The combination with means for forming a shade-slat loop, of feed rolls, a gear movable with one of the feed rolls, a shaft, a gear held to the shaft and in mesh with the other gear, a chain movable with the gear, a lever, means supporting the gear and connected to the lever to disengage the gears when the lever is moved in one direction, a spring normally forcing the gears into engagement, a treadle forming a part of the shade-slat loop forming mechanism, means movable with the treadle adapted to engage the lever to disengage the gears, an engaging member movable with the chain, a movable stop, an operating lever, stopping mechanism, and means operated by the stop when the latter is moved to operate the stopping mechanism.

The combination with means for forming a shade-slat loop, of feed rolls, a chain normally movable with the rolls, a lever, means supporting a part of the chain and connected to the lever to permit the chain to be free of the feed rolls when the lever is moved in one direction, a treadle, means movable with the treadle adapted to engage the lever, an engaging member movable with the chain, a movable stop, stopping mechanism, and means operated by the stop when the latter is moved to operate the stopping mechanism.
