ELECTRICALLY-HEATED GVEN.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY Pinon BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at littsfield, in the county of Berkshire, State of Massachusetts. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electricallylieated Ovens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electrically heated cooking devices, and more particularly to electrically heated ovens provided with electric resistance units and are suitable for operations such as broiling, roasting and baking.
- The object of my invention is to provide an oven in which the same heating unit or units may be efficiently utilized for any of the aforesaid operations.
In performing such operations as broiling it is desirable that a unit be located at the top of the oven so that the heat may be showered down upon the article to be broiled. In operations such as roasting, on the contrary, it is desirable that the unit be vertically disposed so that the distribution of heat be as uniform as possible. In both the broiling and roasting operations it is desirable that the heating unit be located as close as possible to the article being cooked. In certain other operations such as baking which do not require as high heat and which require more space the heating i units should preferably be located at a greater distance from the aforesaid articles.
According to my invention a pair of substantially fiat electric resistance heating units are pivotally mounted in the oven in such a way that they may be swung to horizontal or vertical positions therein. The pi votal mounting is such that when the units are in their vertical position, there is just enough space between them for the pan which is to hold the roast. To provide for the ready regulation of the distance between the article to be cooked and the units in their horizontal positions, I provide a removable shelf and a series of superposed supports therefor.
My invention will be more thoroughly understood by referring to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section and Fig. 2 is a lon itudinal vertical seclion of an oven embo ying my invention.
Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawing 10 and 11 are inner and outer metallic shells between which is packed any suitable heat insulating material 12 to form the stationary casing of the oven. An electric furnace sublimation product containing silicon such as that disclosed in Arthur application, Ser. No. 718,825, filed Sept. 6, 1912, and which has a very high insulation value would be suitable for this purpose. Within the oven are mounted two electric resistance heating units 13, one being mounted on the top wall of the oven and the other on the bottom of the same. These units may be such as that disclosed in Cubitt Patent #964,759. Each of the said units is pivotally mounted at 14 and spring latching means 15 serves to hold each of the units in its horizontal position. The pivotal axes of the units are in opposite sides, that of the top unit being located at the left thereof and that of the other at the right thereof. iVhen the units are in vertical position, a compartment is formed therebetween of substantially the width ofthe units, or somewhat wider if so desired. As shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, the upper unit may be swung upwardly and the lower unit downwardly to a-vertical position. The conductors 16 which serve to connect the resistance elements of the heating units to the external circuit extend through metal bushings 17 and are attached to insulating plugs 18 fitting therein. The said bushings are located in line with the pivotal axes of the respective units. A series of superposed supporting flanges 19 are located on each side of the oven and a removable shelf 20 is adapted to be supported thereby.
When it is desired to perform the broiling operation, the article to be broiled may be placed upon the shelf 20, and the distance from the heating units adjusted by placing the said shelf upon any desired pair of the supports 19. A baking operation may also be performed with the units in a horizontal position. When it is desired to erform an operation such as roasting, the s "elf 20 should be removed from the oven. The heating units should then be swung to their vertical positions. The roast supported by the usual drip pan may then be placed between the units. It has been found that the roasting operation may be performed in an ment-isforrned by. the heating units, thus t ::;..i,=L- reducing the mtervemng air space and causing the heat to be very efficiently conducted to the roast.
Various modifications of the above described structure will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, in order to be considered as coming within the scope of my invention set forth in the following claitfis; claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-or the United States is 1.
