Be it known that I CHARLES GIBBS, a citil Zen of the l nited States, residing in borough of Bronx. city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stenciling-Machines, of which th following is a specification.
This invention relates to sheet feeding devices for stenciling machines, etc., and is in th nature of an improvement upon the invention disclosed in application No. 516,854, filed September 9, 1909. In said application, the sheet pile is placed upon a table and is set to gages. The leading edges of the sheets are held by clips, and a pressure bar bears down upon the rear ends of the sheets. A feed roll and controlling mechanism there for depend from a carriage, which reciprocates on the table toward and away from the stencil cylinder. Said roll makes a complete reciprocation at each revolution of said cylinder. The roll turns freely for the first part of its backward stroke and for the rest of the stroke is clutched or prevented from turning by said controlling mechanism and downward pressure is simultaneously applied upon the roll or rolls whereby the E Specification of Letters Patent.

One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide simplified inexpensive and improved mechanism for reciprocating said carriage.

A further object is to make improved provision for adjusting the end gage withthe pressure bar thereon. toward and away from the clips and stencil cylinder to fit different lengths of sheets.
In the preferred form of this invention, the feeding machine is independent, that is. it does not form a part of the stenciling machine, and the forward end of its frame hooks on to the stenciling or printing machine frame by means of pins whereby both machine frames are locked together. A drive shaft on the feeding machine for the mechanism that reciprocates the carriage. is clutched to a shaft on the stenciling machine. which is driven from the stencil cylinder drive shaft, which may be either hand or power drivein so that the feeding machine operates in unison with said cylinder. Said feeding machine drive shaft extends from front to rear of the machine near the underside of the table and preferably close to the side of the frame. This shaft is geared to another shaft, which is in turn geared to a crank that revolves in a horizontal plane near the underside of the table midway between the sides of the machine. The carriage, which comprises a bar close to the underside of the table and uprights extending therefrom. has a slide block fixed on said bar midway, which slides on a guide bar disposed centrally from front to rear of the machine. A pitinan connects said crank block whereby the carriage is reciprocated.
To detach the feeding machine from the printing machine, itis merely required to unhook the frames and unlock the shaft clutch. An ordinary feed table may then be hooked on. thus rendering the printing machine hand or machine fed readily and conveniently.

The slenciling machine 1 is the well known Underwood revolving duplicator; wherein a stencil cylinder 2 may be rotated by a handle 3 or may be power driven from the drive shaft 4-, and a pressure roll 5 presses the sheets to be stencil ed, against the cylinder. The sheet pile 6 to be stenciled placed on the table '7 of the feeding machine, and is lined in by the side gages 8 and end gage 2). Feed rolls or wheels 10 advance the sheets singly into the bite of the cylinder 2 and roll. Said feed rolls depend from a carriage ll which con'ipriscs a horizontal band 12 underneath the table '7, bent upward to form upright supports 13, which pass through slots ll: of said table. The crank and slide block 15 are joined by a pitinan 29, whereby the carriage 11 is reciprocated in unison with the stencil cylinder said carriage receiving one com-- plete reciprocation at each revolution of the stencil cylinder.

[luring the forward stroke of said feed roll. it is held against rotation. to grip the top sheet from oil the pile t3, and advance it into the bite of the cylinder and roll Erball. 53 is pressed by a spring 34; into the bite of an abutment 35 on an arm -30, whereby the feed roll is prevented from turning when moving forward to feed the sheets; although the roll 10 can turn freely on its backward stroke. as the periphery of wheel no then drives the ball 33 away from the narrowing throat formed by said periphery and abutment in order that the feed roll may be prevented from turning at the latter part of llO its backward stroke to buckle the top sheet for separating it from the pile to advance it forward, an opposite ball 37, spring 38 and abutment 39 are provided, but which are kept out of play by a releasing mechanism to allow the feed roll to turn freely during the first part of the backward stroke. Said releasing mechanism comprises an arm normally pushing the ball 37 out of the bite, so that wheel 36 and the feed roll are released for rotation. Said arm 10 is caused to push the ball by a link 5L1 pivoted thereto having its other end engaging the rock shaft 32, and a cam upon a rock shaft a3 on the carriage, engaging the link head all to pull the link. An arm l t fixed on shaft 43 has a projecting pin 45, in the path of which is a stop -16 on table "1', whereby the pin is engaged to actuate the arm its to turn the rock shaft l3 to actuate the cam 42 for releasing the roll at the end of the forward stroke. Before reaching the latter part of the backward stroke, the pin strikes an opposite stop l6, whereby the cam i2 is actuated to disengage the link 11, which being thus released allows the spring al upon arm 31 to turn the arm 40 about its fulcrum 10 to remove its pressure from the ball 37. The pressure on the ball being removed, further rotation of the feed roll is prevented till the end of the stroke. The roll being thus clutched, the top sheetis buckled as shown in Fig. +1, which removes its leading edge from clips 4:7, and the roll then carries the sheet forward to the stenciling machine; the rear edge of the sheet being readily released from the pressure bar 4-8 provided 011 the end gage 9.
Downward pressure is temporarily applied upcn the feeding rolls by a draw spring -19 which connects said roll carrying arm 31 with an arm fixed to a rock shaft 51, mounted on the upright 13. This rock shaft carries a cam or arm 52 in the path of a stationary adjustable stop 53 provided on table 7. Said stop engages this cam during the time that the sheet is buckled, and hence turns the rock shaft 51 to draw spring 49 to press down the feed roll for securing a firmer grip on the top sheet to facilitate the buckling or picking up thereof from the sheet pile 6.
The feed roll shaft 30 is constructed to provide means for readily interchanging rolls or wheels, so that either rubber rolls or toothed wheels may be used and their spacing conveniently changed to suit difierent requirements in feedin such as different grades of sheets, or differences of weather making a different grip of the sheets preferable.
The construction of the shaft, shown in Fig. 8, comprises a threaded sleeve 54 which holds the clutch wheel or disk 36. A bushing 55 on each side of this wheel is fitted in a bearing 56 of the roll carrying arm 31, and a tapped sleeve 57 threads over sleeve 54: on each side of said bushing and is tightened thereagainst, whereby said wheel 36, sleeve 51, bushings 55, and sleeves 57 are held together for rotation. The shaft 30 slides into said sleeves, and various feed wheels or rolls 10 may be placed thereover and spaced as required by space collars or fillers 58 to suit different conditions of feeding. A nut 59 threads over each end of the shaft 30, and is tightened against the collar 58 which grips the shaft 30, rolls 10, and collars 58 wit-h the sleeves 57 for rotation. It will be seen that the shaft 30 being supported entirely by the arm 31 midway, leaving the ends thereof free, enables to use rolls or wheels interchangeably and to change the spacing between them, by merely unscrewing the nuts 59. A gravity latch 31 is pivoted on the feed roll arm 31 to hold the rolls up, for convenience in inserting the sheet pile, said latch catching on the rock shaft 51 when the rolls are lifted, as shown in Fig. 6. The clips 17, forming part of gage rods 60 which are guided vertically by slots 61 and screws 62, bear down on the leading edges of the sheets by their own weight; and for con venience in inserting the sheet pile said clips may be maintained raised by turning the handle 63, Fig. 6, of a rock shaft Get, Fig. at, which causes a cam 65 thereon, having a flat portion 66, to engage with a spring 67 fixed to table 7. Arms 68 depending from rock shaft 64 bear upwardly against pins 69 of gage rods 60, whereby the clips 47 are raised; and said spring holding the cam turned, the clips are maintained raised until restored by turning back the handle 63 of the rock shaft 64. A pin 70, Fig. 6, pre vents the handle 63 and its depending parts from dropping too far. The end gage 5) with the pressure bar 4.8 thereon, Figs. 1 and 3, may be adjusted toward and away from the clips *7 and the stenciling machine, to fit sheets of various lengths. The bolt 71 of the gage passes through a slot 72 in the table 7 so that the gage 9 may be moved toward and away from clips 47 to aiine the sheet pile 6, and fixed in adjusted position by tightening the thumb nut 7 The mechanism for clutching, or coupling and uncoupling the shaft 23 on the stenciling machine and the feeding machine drive shaft 2 1, comprises a sleeve 7 1, splined on shaft 24. which slides over the end of shaft A slot 75 in the sleeve is thus engaged by a dog or projection 77 on shaft 23 entering therein, whereby the shafts are coupled for rotation. A coiled spring '78 on shaft 24 abutting against a collar 79 fixed to the shaft, presses against the sleeve 74 to maintain it over the shaft 23, thereby preventing at... m an accidental uncoupling of the shafts. In an l annular groove of the sleeve 7% is seated a locking member or latch 81. which slides upon a guide bar 82, suspended from the table if "amc, by its hole 83 fitting thereover, so that the sleeve 7% can be shifted to couple and uncouple the shafts by means of i'noving said latch theretlong. For preventing the sleeve 7% from sliding outward when uncoupled, a projection S ton. latch 81 is engaged with a recess 85 in the table frame, whereby the sleeve is locked against the action of spring 78. ll hen the latch 81 is pulled away from recess 85, the spring 78 immediately acts to clutch, or couple the shafts; a lug St on the frame being struck by the latch 81 to prevent the sleeve from being pressed too far, and the end of the sleeve being beveled or cam faced at S? to guide the projection 77 into the slot 75 to facilitate the coupling. It will be observed that the sleeve Ti can seize the key 77 at only one point in the revolution of the shafts. Thus if the whole machine is once assem bled correctly, the clutch if disconnected will not start the paper-feeding mechanism again until the stencil cylinder reaches the point where said feeding mechanism will be properly timed with reference to it. In other words. the paper-feed will feed. at the right time by merely putting the feeding table in place even if the stencil cylinder be at one point of operation and the feeding mechanism at some other. This makes the machine almost fool proof in this regard.

The light and compact. mechanism of this feed-- ing machine aids in the ready attachment and detzuzhment of the machine. and renders it portable. Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a sheet feeding machine for a. sten oiling or printing machine, the combination with a removable table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage, and shoe feeding mechanism thereon, of a crank below said table revolving in a horizontal plane, a pitman connecting the crank to said carriage to reciprocate it, said crank and pitman being disposed midway between the sides of the feeding machine and connecting with said carriage midway, and means to operate the crank.
In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, the combination with a removable table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage, and sheet feeding mechanism. thereon, of a slide on said carriage below the table, a guide therefor, said slide and guide disposed midway between the sides of said carriage to secure against binding thereof, a horizontally moving crank and pitman connecting with said slide to reciprocate said carriage, and means to operate the crank.
In a sheet feeding machine for a stern ciling or printing machine, the combination with a renmvablc table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage, and sheet feeding mechanism thereon, of guiding means for said carriage below the table, said guiding means disposed midway beti cell the sides of said :arriage to secure against hint ling there of, a horizontally moving crank and pitman. for reciprocating the carriage connecting therewith midway, and means to operate the crank.

3. In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciting or printing machine, the combination with a table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage. and sheet feeding mechanism thereon. of a crank and pitman below said table to reciprocate said carriage, said crank and pitman disposed midway and connecting with the carriage midway between the sides of the carriage to secure against binding thereof, a revoluble shaft extending from front to rear of the feeding machine, and an upstanding shaft on the printing machine engaging therewith to drive it, said revoluble shaft being geared with said crank to operate it.
7. A sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine adapted to be readily detached for feeding the printing machine by hand, having the combination with a table for the sheets, and a reciprocating carriage with sheet feeding mechanism thereon, of a crank and pitman below the table operating in a horizontal plane, said pitman connecting with said carriage midway oetween its sides to reciprocate it without binding, a revoluble shaft extending from front to rear of the feeding machine being driven by the printing machine to operate said crank, and a clutch on said shaft to disengage it from the printing machine for detaching the feeding machine.
8. A sheet. feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine adapted to be readily detached for feeding the printing machine by hand, having the combination with a table for the sheets, and a reciprocating carriage with sheet feeding mechanism thereon, of guiding means for said carriage below the table disposed midway between the sides of the carriage to secure against binding thereof, a crank and pitman operating in a horizontal plane connecting with the carriage midway to reciprocate it, a revoluble shaft extending from front to rear of the feeding machine being driven by the print ing machine to operate said crank, and a clutch on said shaft to disengage it from the printing machine for detaching the feed ing machine.
9. A sheet feeding machine for a stencil ing or printin machine, comprising a carriage with sheet feeding mechanism and a table for the sheets on which said carriage is reciprocatcd, having the combination of means for locking and unlocking the frames for detaching the feeding machine readily for feeding the printing machine by hand, a crank and pitman for reciprocating said carriage operating in a horizontal. plane below the table, guides for the carriage disposed midway between its sides to move the carriage without binding, a revoluble shaft I driven by the printing machine to operate the crank, and means for uncoupling said shaft from the printing machine for detachin the feeding machine.
10. A sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine. comprising a carriage with sheet feeding mechanism and a table for the sheets on which said carriage is reciprocated. having the combination of means for locking and unlocking the frames, a crank and pitman for reciprocating said carriage operating in a horizontal plane below the table, said pitman connecting with the carriage midway between its sides to move it without binding, a revoluble shaft driven by the printing machine to operate he crank, and a clutch to disengage said shaft from the printing machine, the feeding machine being detached from the printing machine to render it hand fed by on locking said frames and said clutch.
ll. In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, the combination with a table for the sheets, mechanism thereon for feeding the sheets, clips on said table for the leading edges of the sheets, and slidable rods on which said clips are fixed, of a rock shaft, arms extending from said shaft bearing against said rods to dispose said clips to inoperative position when said shaft is rocked, a cam or member on said shaft, and a spring engaging therewith to maintain said clips in inoperative position; said shaft being rocked to disengage said spring to restore said clips.
12. In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, the combination with a table for the sheets, mechanism thereon for feeding the sheets, clips 011 said table for the leading edges of the sheets, and vertically slidable rods on which said clips are fixed, of a rock shaft, projections on said rods, arms extending from said shaft engaging with said projections to raise said clips when the shaft is rocked, a cam on said shaft having a flat portion, and a spring pressing against the fiat portion to maintain said clips raised and inoperative.
13. In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, said machines comprising drive shafts adapted to readily attach and detach to render the printing machine hand or machine fed, a clutch for the machine shafts, comprising a sleeve splined on one shaft, a slot in said sleeve, a dog on the opposite shaft, said sleeve sliding Over the opposite shaft to engage said dog with said slot to clutch the shafts.
14. In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, said machines comprising drive shafts adapted to readily attach and detach to render the printing machine hand or machine fed, a clutch for the machine shafts, comprising a sleeve splined weenie on one shaft, a slot in said sleeve, a dog on I of said bushings being tapped to thread the opposite shaft, said sleeve sliding over the opposite shaft to engage said dog with said slot to clutch the shafts; the end of said sleeve being beveled or cam-faced to guide said dog into said slot.
15. in a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, said machines comprising drive shafts adapted to readily attach and. detach to render the printing machine hand or machine fed, a clutch for the machine shafts, including a sleeve splinetl on one shaft, the opposite shaft. being adapted to engage with said sleeve when it slides thereover to clutch the shafts, and a spring normallv hearing against said sleeve to prevent acc'lental back sliding thereof and to positively naintain the shafts clutched.

In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or prii'iting machine, said machines comprising drive shafts adapted. to readily attach and detach to render the printing machine hand r machine fed, a clutch for the machine shafts, including a sleeve splined on one shaft, the opposite. shaft being ad aptcd to engage with. said sleeve when it slides thercover to clutch the shafts, a s iring normally bearing against said sleeve to prevent accidental. back sliding thereof and to positively maintain the shafts clutched, and a member on said sleeve engaging with the machine frame or a fixed iueml er when the clutch is unlocked to prevent said spring from pressing the sleeve out-Ward.

18. in a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, the combination. with a table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage, and sheet feedingmechanism thereon including feeding rolls or wheels, and clutching mechanism theij'efor. of a shaft for said rolls supported between its ends on an arm from. the carriage to leave the ends free, a threaded sleeve for said shaft, a disk on said sleeve to operate with the clutchingmechanism, bushing on each side of said disk fitting in a bearing on said arm, and a sleeve for the shaft on. each side over said former sleeve and being tightened against said bushings to hold the sleeves, bushings, and disk together in said bearing; said shaft being capable to slide in and out of said sleeve; said feed rolls or wheels being mounted on said shaft and spaced by collars, and a out at each end of the shaft threading thereover and being tightened to hold the shaft, collars, and sleeves for rotating together; said rolls or Wheels being removable for changing wheels or spacing them by unscrewing said nuts.
19. In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, the combination with a table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage, sheet feeding rolls or Wheels thereon, and. clutching mechanism therefor, of a shaft for said rolls supported between its ends on an arm from the carriage to leave its ends free, a sleeve journaled on said arm, a disk or Wheel on said sleeve to oper ate with said clutching mechanism. said shaft passing within said sleeve, said rolls being mounted on the shaft. and spaced by collars, and a nut threading over each end of said. shaft to tighten and hold the shaft, sleeve, and disk for rotating together, said nuts being adapted to be unscrewed for changing wheels and rolls or to alter their spacing.
20. The combination with a stenciling machine and a shaft thereon, of a table arranged to be removablv attached. to said ma: chine, a feed mechanism on said table, said feed mechanism comprising a shaft arranged to be an extension of said machine shaft when said table is attached to said machine, and a clutch on said table shaft arranged to seize said machine shaft so that one shaft ma)- drive the other.
21. The combination with a stcnciling machine and a shaft thereon, of a table arranged to be removablv attached to said ma chine, a feed mechanism on said table, a shaft in said feed mechanism. a clutch on said feed shaft comprising a sleeve slidable thereon, a kc} on said machine shaft arranged to be engaged bv said key to cause said shafts to revolve as a unit, a spring urging said sleeve to engage vvith said key, and a latch to hold said sleeve.
The combination with a stenciling ma chine and a. shaft thereon, of a table arranged to be rcmovably attached to said machine, a key on said machine shaft, a feed mechanism on said table, a shaft in. said feed mechanism, and a sleeve slidable on said feed shaft comprising a beveled face and a slot arranged to lock with said key to cause said shafts to turn together.

gearing extending from said holder to a clutch, gearing extending from said clutch to said feed mechanism, and a member in said clutch arranged to prevent the seizing of the clutch unless said feed mechanism is properly timed with reference to the stencil holder.
2st. in a stenciling machine, the combination with a stencil holder, of a removable paper table comprising a feed mechanism, means for gearing said feed mechanism to cause it to be operated from said stencil holder, and means causing said feed mechanism to automatically time itself correctly with reference to said holder when the removed table is replaced.
25. in a stenciling machine, the combina tion with a stencil cylinder, of a removable paper table comprising a feed mechanism, gearing connecting said cylinder to said feed mechanism, a spring clutch in said gearing, a latch holding said clutch released, and a member in said clutch arranged to prevent the seizing of said clutch when free from said latch unless said feed mechanism is properly timed ith reference to the stencil cylinder.
26. The combination with a paper table, of a reciprocating paper feeding device comprising an arm, a shaft rotatable on said arm, abutments on said shaft, removable wheels, one on each side of said arm arranged to bear against said abutments, and means for locking each wheel against its abutment.

The combination with a paper table, of a reciprocating paper feeding device comprising a central arm, a shaft rotatable on said arm, sleeves on said shaft, removable wheels, one on each side of said arm arranged to bear against said sleeves, and sleeves arranged to lock said wheels against said first sleeves.
28. in a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, the combination with a removable table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage, and sheet feeding mechanism thereon, of a crank below said table revolving in a horizontal plane, a pitman connecting the crank to said carriage to reciprocate it, means to operate said crank, gearing connecting said printing machine to said carriage, a clutch in said gearing, and means whereby said clutch automatically times the operations of said sheet feeding means to cooperate with said printing machine.
in a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, the combination with a table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage having sheet feeding mechanism thereon, and power transmitting means from said printing machine to operate the feeding machine, of means for attaching said table to said stenciling machine without the aid of a tool. and holding it in position when so attached, said means also permitting the detaching of the feeding machine without the aid of a tool for feeding the printing machine by hand, and clutch members forming part of said transmitting means automatically brought into position to seize each other by so attaching said table.

In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, the combination with a table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage having sheet feeding mechanism thereon, and power transmitting means from said printing machine to operate the feeding machine, of means for readily detaching the feeding machine without the aid of a tool for feeding the printing machine by hand; said detaching means including a hook and pins for connecting both machine frames, and clutch mechanism comprising members automatically brought into position for seizing each other for driving said transmission means.

In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or printing machine, the combination with a table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage having sheet feeding mechanism thereon, and power transmitting means from said printing machine to operate the feeding machine, of means for attaching said feeding machine so that it may be readily detached for feedin the printing machine by hand; said means including a clutch mechanism comprising members automatically brought into position for seizing each other for driving said transmission means.

In a sheet feeding machine for a hand fed stenciling or printing machine, said machines comprising drive shafts,the combination of a clutch for connecting the shafts of said machines, and means for holding the frames of the machines together for attach ing the feeding machine and bringing the members of said clutch automatically into position for seizing each other to render the printing machine machine fed.

In a sheet feeding machine for a hand fed stenciling or printing machine, the combination with a table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage with sheetfeeding mecha nism, and power transmitting means for con necting the mechanism of both machines, of means for readily attaching the feeding machine for feeding the printing machine; said attaching means including a clutch mecha nism for said transmitting means, said. clutch comprising members automatically positioned for seizing each other.

In a sheet feeding machine for a stenciling or print-ing machine, the combination with a table for the sheets, a reciprocating carriage with sheet feeding mechanism, and power transmitting means for connecting the mechanism oi? both machines, of means for readily detaching the feeding machine for feeding the printing machine by hand; said detaching means including hooks and pins for locking both machine frames, and clutching means for said transmission means; said clutching means comprising members automatically brought into position for seizing each other.
