To aZZ whom it m ay concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS Monron CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garden City, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Furnace-Fronts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in furnace fronts and, while of general applicability, it is especially adapted for use in furnaces where mechanical stokers of the end less traveling grate type are employed.
The object of my invention is to provide a furnace having an ignition arch under which the first stages of combustion shall take place, and which arch shall be at the same distance above the fiat horizontal grate at all points. of its breadth, and to so con struct the furnace that no horizontal thrust shall be exerted against the side walls. I accomplish these results by supporting; the furnace front and that part of the weight of the boiler and its contents which said furnace front receives, on structural iron or steel beams resting on the side walls and protect these beams from the fire by firebrick blocks supported by these beams and by a plate suspended from the front plate. The fire-brick blocks are individually sus pended and are so shaped and mounted that a single brick may be replaced without disturbing the remaining bricks, in case such a single brick only should be injured and require replacing.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a boiler front embodying my invention, the boiler being shown in elevation for sake of clearness in the drawings; Fig. 2 is a partial front elevation of a furnace embodying my invention; Fig. 3 is an isometric drawing of the special fire brick employed; Fig. 4 is a vertical section similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified form of my invention; and Fig. 5 shows the supporting means as employed in a still further modified form of the invention.
As shown in the drawings, 3 is a steam boiler mounted in the usual furnace struc ture which has side walls 4t and front wall The front of the furnace is covered by a metal plate 6 which extends down over the side walls and forms a means of mounting the cleaning doors 7, tie hopper (if one.

be used) and the fuel distributing plate 8, which plate performs the double function of acting as a fuel distributer and as a means of assisting in the support of the bricks 9 which form the ignition arch. Instead of the customary arch for carrying the front wall, and weight of the boiler and contents which said front wall receives, I provide one or more structural iron or steel members 10, in the present instance shown as steel T beams, which support the wall 5 and which rest upon the side walls and transmit thereto the load in the direction of their greatest strength, that is, vertically. This construc tion has a material advantage over either the flat or the springing arch in that there is no horizontal thrust exerted against the side walls.
I protect the lower face of the members 10 by the special fire-brick blocks 9, shown in detached view in Fig. 3. Various means of supporting these blocks fall within the scope of my invention, the preferred form being that shown in Fig. 1. As there illustrated, the block is provided with an L- shaped passage way 11 adapted to receive a supporting means 12. In the present case this support 12 comprises a section of pipe a, an elbow Z), a shorter section of pipe 0, and a T (Z. There is an elongated recess 13 in the upper side of the block 9 at the upper end of the vertical portion of passage way 11 and the T (Z extends into the recess 18. Screwed, or otherwise suitably secured to a beam 10 are hook-shaped hangers 14 which project down into recesses 13 in position to enter Ts (Z. In assembling, the parts I), c and (Z are joined and inserted in the vertical portion of passage way 11. Then a is introduced through its horizontal portion and screwed into the elbow 12. Asbestos or other suitable packing 15 is then introduced around the support 12, filling the passage way 11. The brick 9 are then lifted into place, the Ts (Z passed over the horizontal member of hooks 14 and the brick forced home, the screw threaded ends of the pipes a projecting through slots 17 in the plate 8 to receive the nuts 18. Asbestos, or other suitable packing 20 may be inserted between the blocks 9 and the front plate 8 to make a close joint and lessen the conduction of heat to said plate. Luting may be employed to close any slight opening I which may be left between the brick of the wall 5 and the blocks 9.
AS previously stated a plate 8 (prefe -ably of cast iron) is bolted to the boiler front 6. This plate is provided with two sets of vertically elongated slots or bolt- holes 16, 17, the upper set 16 of which are employed in bolting the plate 8 to the front 6 by the bolts 16, and the lower set 17 in receiving the horizontal members a of the supports 12, which are held in place thcreagainst by nuts 18. The slotted connections are provided in order that the plate 8 may be vertically adjusted with reference to the remainder of the boiler front. This adjustment is required in order that the lower lip 19 of the plate 8 may always project below the blocks 9 to protect them from abrasion by the fuel and also that the plate may be adjusted to vary the amount of fuel fed on to the grate G.
l have shown the block 9 as provided with a groove 21 on one side and a tongue 22 on the other to aid in preventing the passage of gases between the adjacent brick when they are assembled in the arch. I have also shown a groove 23 in the front side of the brick to cooperate with a corresponding rib 2 1 on the plate 8 to aid in supporting the bricks. But either of these features may be omitted without in any way departing from my invention.
Fig. 4 shows a modified form of my invention in which the support 12 is provided with an elbow f and a short pipe section 9 in place of the T (Z of Fig. 1. In this case the pipe 9 rests on one flange of the l -beam 10 and is supported thereby. T his structure obviates the formation of the recesses 13 in the blocks 9 but necessitates the leaving of similar recesses in the brick work above the lower face of the T 10.

Having thus describee my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. in a furnace, side walls, a metallic beam resting on said side walls, a slotted fuel-distributing plate secured to the front of said furnace, fire-brick blocks mounted below said beam in position to protect it from the heat of the tire, an i l-shaped supporting means within each fire-brick block, the vertical portions of said supporting means being attached to .id beam, and the horizontal portions pa, 1g through slots in the distributing plate and being secured to said plate.
2. in a furnace, side walls, a metallic beam resting on said side walls, a slotted vertically adjustable fuel-distributing plate secured to the front of said furnace, lirebrick blocks mounted below said beam in position to protect it from the heat of the tire, an l -shaped supporting means within each fire-brick block, the vertical portions of said. supporting means being attached to said beam, and the horizontal portions passing through slots in the distributing plate and being secured to said plate.
3. in a furnace, side walls. a. metallic beam. resting on said side walls, a slot-ted fuel-distributing plate secured to the front of said furnace, firebrick blocks mounted below said beam in position to protect it from the heat of the fire, a hollow lr-shaped supporting means within each fire-brick block, the vertical portions of said supporting means being attached to said beam, and the horizontal portions passing through slots in the distributing plate and being secured to said plate.

5. ltn a furnace, side walls, a metallic beam resting on said side walls, a slotted fuel-distributingplate secured to the front of said furnace, fire-brick blocks mounted below said beam in position to protect it from the heat of the tire, said blocks having an l.-shaped passage way extending from the front side to the top and being provided with an elongated recess at the upper end of the l..-shaped passage way, an t.-shaped supporting means within each block, hangers depending from said beam in position to enter said elongated recess, the vertical portions of said supporting means embracing said hangers and the horizontal portions passing through slots in the distributing plate and being secured to said plate.
6. In a furnace, a flat arch, metallic reinforcing means for supporting said arch, a Yertically adjustable fuel-distributing front plate, and blocks of fire-brick supported by said reinforcing means and braced by said distributing plate, for protecting the reinforcing means from the fire.
7. In a furnace, a flat arch, metallic reinforcing means for supporting said arch, a
fuel-distributing front plate, blocks of firebrick beneath and supported by said reinforcing means and braced by said distributing plate, said distributing plate being Vertically adjustable With reference to the remainder of the structure.
