Specification of Letters Patent.
To a 1171011'1. it may concern:
Beit known that we, Jonx' SELLERS BAN- cnorr and Mxniurz C. INDAI-IL, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composing- Machines for Record Strips; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to improvements in record strip composing machines for use in connection with automatic type casting and composing machines equipped ith supplemental mold adjusting means for adding extra spacing to the produced type, and it has for its principal object to provide a simple and effective means whereby such spacing can at will be applied to single type.
Heretofore the supplemental controlled through either the justifying space signal or the justification signal components as illustrated in Patents No. 952,633 of March 22. 1310, and No. 1,042,476 of October 29, 1912. According to the first of said patents the extra spacing component is associated with the justification space signal and operates to connect a mechanism responding to said space signal with shifting devices controlled by the extra spacing component for shifting an extra spacing member alternately into and out of operative con nect'ion with the mold adjusting devices. Inasmuch as the justifying space signal is an essential component of the extra spacing signal. only type occurring intern'iediate justification spaces can be enlarged. The machine of the second patent is designed to remove this restriction and permit the extra. spacing to be applied to any type or syllable between justifying spaces, to which end the actuating devices for the extra spacing member are coupled with the driving mechanism of the casting machine, and the application thereof to said extra spacing member is controlled by the justification designating components in association with a type signal. This involves not only an undue multiplication of signal components and additions to the controlling members for th spacing -mechanism of the casting machine has been chine, but also the abandonment of the sectional line justification features of the casting machine,
N ow it is proposed, according to the present invention, to exercise control of the extra spacing member of Patent No. 1,0et2,4t-7 6 through a single special signal-component or perforation, which, when associated with any type signal will operate to apply the extra spacing member, and when omitted Will cause the Withdrawal of said member or maintain same out of engagement. Thus whenever a signal containing this special component is presented it will add the extra space to the produced type, and when omitted Will result in the product-ion oftype of normal dimensions. Y
Although intimately related to the casting machine the present invention pertains more directly to. the composing machine and embraces the means whereby the extra component of the type signals is produced and the space value thereof registered on the line measuring mechanism, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating a preferred form of embodiment, Figure l is a front elevation of a part of known form of composing machine with the improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a partial transverse vertical section of said machine. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the added elements shown detached and in con-- junctionwith the series of punch bars. Fig. a is a similar view with the connector or interponent. engaged and the line rack gaging member advanced.
The same numerals designate like parts in the several views.
The invention is illustrated in its application to the composing machine of Patent No. 944,405. dated December 28, 1909, to which reference is made for a more full disclosure of its construction and operation, it being understood that the only changes are by way of addition.
principal elements of the patented machine, such as the series of thirty one punches and attached punch-bars 1 through which the omponents of the type, spaceand justification signals are produced; the units rack 2. units wheel 3 and justification drum 4 of the line measuring mechanism; the key bank Patented Apr. 28, 1914. Application filed May 21, 1913. Serial No. 769,015.
extra spacing member of the casting ma-v I It will suffice for present purposes to identify some of the 5; and the paper feed 6. Each of the punch bars 1 is coupled with a compressed air motor and each key controls the operation of such of the punch bars, usua lly two-as correspond with the signal components pertaining thereto. The punches comprise three groups, one group of fourteen representing successive stages of adjustment of the die case in one direction, a second group representing like stages of adjustment in a direction transverse to the first, and a third group including two justification designating punches and a single space or transfer punch. 'lhe final or fifteenth stage of adjustment for each of the fourteen groups is indicated by the absence of any component of that group.
, Une of the fourteen group of punch bars represents dimensions as well as position, its members being separately coupled to complemental members of a series of stop bars (not shown) which measure the advance of the units rack when engaged with the units wheel of the line measuring mechanism, said units rack normally engaging an abutment or stop 7 which determines the zero or datum line for measuring the excursions of the units rack.
To provide for the new or extra spacing signal component an extra or supplemental punch 10 is added to theseries heretofore employed, one not participating in the formation of any of the usual type, space and justification signals and only brought into action in connection with the type or space punches when the extra spacing is to be applied to the indicated type body. Con- 'veniently this extra or supplemental spacing punch 10 is unprovided with a special motor but is arranged to be coupled at will with the type or space punches and to be actuated thereby. To this end punch 10 is provided with shoulders forming an opensided bearing 11 for the entrance and withdrawal of an interponent 12, and each of the punches 1 pertaining to the type and space components is furnished with a shoulder 13 located beneath or in rear of the path of interponent 12 in its movement toward and from the punches, so that when said interponent is advanced into engagement with punch 10 it will be in position to be engaged by one or more of the punches 1 and trans mit motion from the latter to the former.
lnterponent 12 extends transversely of the series of punches and is supported to move bothlaterally and longitudinally of said punches, as by pivotally supporting the outer portion thereof upon levers 14, the latter pivotally attached at their opposite or lower ends to the frame. To one or both of said levers 14: is connected a retracting spring '15 and an actuating means, represented by a rod 16 provided with a button 17, and notched, as at 18, to cooperate with noeaesi a shoulder on the frame for retaining the interponent in its forward or engaging position.
When it is desired to produce the extra spacing signal the actuating devices for interponent- 12 are manipulated or set to engage the interponent with the punches before pressure is applied to the key corresponding with the desired type so that when the signal representing said type is produced punch 10 will be actuated to apply the extraspacing signal component. The addition of this extra spacing to the type would seri-.
ously interfere with the correct action of the line measuring mechanism if the additional space was not registered thereon, and to permit this to be done, the oscillatory support for the interponent 12 is provided with a stepped gage 20 disposed between abutment 7 and units rack 2 in the line of movement of the latter. The contacting surfaces of gage 20 are displaced by an amount equal or proportional to the space to be added to the type, and said surfaces are so disposed that'the thicker portion of the gage stands normally in line with the units rack when interponent 12 is retracted, and when the latter is engaged, the narrower portion of the wedge will be interposed to enlarge the stroke of the units rack by an amount corresponding with space added to the type. The shoulder intermediate the two gaging surfaces is inclined to facilitate movement of the gage while the units rack is retracted.
The operation will be readily understood. When the retaining devices represented by notch 18 are released, as by the tilting of rod 16, interponent 12 is automatically retracted, punch 10 rendered inoperative and gage 20 shifted to interpose its major width between the zero stop and the units rack. The composing machine is now in position to operate as usual for the production of type, space and justification signals. When a letter, word or paragraph is reached to which it is desired to add the extra spacing, interponent 12 is moved to operative position and gage 2O shifted to permit longitudinal displacement of the units rack, after which the key or keys representing the type to which the extra spacing is to be applied is or are actuated in the order of composition, with the result that the punch or punches representing the distinguishing signal components, together with punch 10 representing the extra spacing component will be simultaneously operated. At the conclusion of the extra spaced matter the retaining devices are released and interponent 12 is withdrawn to cut out extra spacing punch 10.
It should be stated that in the casting machine of Patent No. 1,042,4e76, the extra spacing component of the type signals operates directly upon the double pawl controlling motor, eliminating the mechanism through produce a special signalcomponent in aswhich the justification signal components are made to operate said motor in the aforesaid patented structure.
Having thus described our invention What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is,
