This invention relates to matrix holders for type casting machines of the class illustrated in Patent No. 625,998, dated May 30, 1899, when used or equipped for casting sorts as distinguished from composition.
With a fully equipped machine the casting of sorts can be accomplished by applying a properly perforated record strip in conjunction with a die case containing the desired character and a mold of the proper necessitating a more or less extensive dc rangement of the die-case lay out to make room for the matrix cont-aining the desired.

The holder is specially designed to receive what are known commercially as cellular matrices, such as employed for composition and illustrated in Patent No. 784,245, dated March 7 1905. Each of said matrices is in form a parallelepiped containing a matrix cavity in one end, a conical centering cavity or seat in the other end, and grooved circumferentially by the intersection of two pair of side grooves of diiferentgcwidths. The matrices areofyuniform or standard dimensions and form save as to the matrix cavities which vary with the character represented. To accommodate and accurately position matrices of this variety block 2 is provided on one edge with an open sided recl tanguiar notch or cell 15, opposed side walls whereof are furnished with inwardly projecting ribs 16 adapted to enter onepair of side grooves in the matrix. preferably vlightly narrower than the width of the engaged grooves so as to permit a very sli ht degree of longitudinal movement of the matrix when suspended. thereon. When block 2 is in position within way 9 of the body sectionthe adjacent wall'of said way constitutes the fourth wall of the cell and effectually prevents lateral esca e or displacement of the matrix deposited in said cell.
In order that the matrix cavity may be properly positioned in justified relation to the body-forming mold it is essential that the retaining notch or cell 15 in the edge of block 2 shall be accurately formed and proportioned to receive the matrix block and retain it in a predetermined relation to both the matrix and body sections ofthe holder to facilitate which, block' 2 in immediate proximity to the cell is preferably formed in three parallel sections of which the intermediate section bears the sustaining ribs 16, while the other two contain the walls for engaging the rectangular body of the matrix to prevent axial rotation. This permits the two outer sections to be assembled and milled or dressed to gage, after which the intermediate section is inserted and the whole firmly united by rivets, screws or equivalent confining means.
By prolonging one of thesfib walls of the slot or way,& beyond the other, a convenient means is provided for facilitating the seating of the matrix in the cell and for directing the matrix section into said slot or way, and with this in view the forward corner of block 2 on the side opposite the extended side wall is beveled as at 52 and ends of the rib or flange of block 2., where it is intersected by the matrix receiving notch or cell 15 are also beveled at 3* as shown in Fig. 5.
The ribs 16 are 1 ,oeaeaa When it is desired to insert a matrix in the holder, the body section is supported in an inclined and inverted position, that is to say, with the cover plate under, and the handle 11 andspring 13are grasped to flex the late ter and withdraw off-set 14 from engagement with recess 15, thus releasing block 2 and permitting it to be withdrawn from its retaining slot or way 9.
g The selected matrix is then inserted in cell. 15 through the open side thereof, either while block 2 is detached or by first locating it in proper position upon the lower extended side wall of slot 9 while the holder is supported bottom up in an inclined vertical position and then bringing block 2 down upon it, the inclines at the'entrance to the cell serving in either case to direct the macentering pin opening and at the same time engaging the latch. It is not necessary, however, that the holder should be removed from the casting machine when it is desired to in- .sert a new matrix, as this can readily be accomplished with the holder in position on the machine b simply releasing the'catch and withdrawing the blogk and returning the latter to position after the matrix has been inserted within the cell.
Considering the degree of accuracy required in a device of this character cost of. 1 production and liability-of derangement are minimized in the construction described, while the operations incident to the exchange of matrices are greatly simplified and quickly performed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is
1. A matrix'holder for type casting machines as described, the same including a slotted body section and a slidable matrix section fitted to the slot in the body section and provided with an open sided matrix receiving cell in one side and extending therethrough in a direction transverse to the. path of movement of the slidable matrix section in the body section.
2. A matrix holder for type casting machines, composed of a body section provided with an open ended slotor way terminating in a gaging abutment, and a matrix section fitted to slide in said way and provided ,in one edge with a matrix retaining cell, the open side whereof is closed by one wall of said way, when the parts are assembled.
3. A matrix holder for type casting machines, consisting of a fiat body section provided with parallel ribs and an open ended Way terminating at its inner end in a gaging abutment and closed on one side by a cover plate; a matrixsection fitted to slide in said.
