To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI JARVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Faust, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of railway ties and more particularly to that type wherein independent means is employed for fastening the rails thereto.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a rail chair of such novel and peculiar construction as to prevent lateral spreading of the rails as well as materially assist in fastening the rails to the tie.
A further object of the invention is to provide a specially constructed rail fastening member adapted to be locked within the tie in such a manner as to not only hold the rail in proper place upon the chair, but to also hold the chair in proper place upon the tie.
With the above and various other objects in view, the invention consists essentially in the combination of a specially constructed tie, a rail chair, and means carried by the tie whereby not only the chair is held thereto but the rail is held securely upon the chair, which means may be quickly and expeditiously removed and replaced without in any way injuring or affecting the utility of the device.
Certain other features of construction together with the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims must be reasonably considered in determining the advantages and novel features of this invention.
In describing my invention in detail refcrence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tie constructed in accordance with this invention, the rails being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is a similar View with certain parts removed. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the fastening member. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the rail chair. Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 8 is an inverted plan view of the tie.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the upper portion of a rail tie, having a portion 2 depending downwardly from the under face thereof so as to produce a substantially T-shaped tie in cross section. The depending portion 2 being braced upon each side as at 3, is adapted to be seated within the road-bed, to materially strengthen the tie as well as to prevent lateral movement thereof.
The rail bearing face of the upper portion 1 is provided near each end thereof with a cut out portion 4, the ends of which are cut at an angle as at 5 to correspond with the angular face 6 of the rail chair 7 adapted to be disposed within the said out out portions. Each chair 7 has formed integral therewith upon its outer end a member 8 which is adapted to overlap the rail base and lie fiat against the rail web to prevent spreading of the rails 9.
The means employed for holding and fastening the chair in place upon the tie as well as fastening the rail upon the chair comprises a specially constructed fastening member having a head 10 adapted to overlap the rail base upon the opposite side from that of the member 8, and a depending member 11 adapted to pass through an opening 12 within the chair, and an opening 13 within the tie portion 1, whereby the lower end of the member 11 is seated within a cut out portion 14 provided within the tie portion 2. The member 11 is secured in such a position through the medium of a transversely extending wedge 15 adapted to pass through a slot 16 within the said member, whereby it is held against withdrawal by means of a suitable pin 17, preferably of the cotterpin type.
To materially soften and deaden the sound of a passing train, and to provide an elastic,
adhesive bed, I have disposed a rubber or other insulating strip 18 upon the rail hearing surface of the chair.
By the above arrangement it will be seen that accidental movement of the chair in any direction is absolutely impossible as the rail-engaging ment, as the said member cannot possibly be removed without first removing the pin 17 and wedge 15.
From the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that no spikes, nails or other such independent elements are used for fastening the rail to the tie or chair; that the wedge and pin being beneath the upper portion of the rail and seated within the road-bed, access thereto cannot be had without first removing a portion of the bed; and that by the peculiar construction of the tie the fastening member is partially protected against exposure of the el ments thus prolonging the longevity of the fastening member.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily comprehended.
I desire it-to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character described including a rail-tie having cut-out portions formed therein upon the rail-engaging sur face thereof, rail chairs adapted to be seated within the said cut-out portions, the said chairs and the said tie having openings formed therein, a rail-fastening member seated within the said openings, and means including a wedge adapted to extend transversely through the said member beneath the rail-engaging surface of the tie, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the character described including a rail-tie substantially T-shaped in cross sect-ion, the said tie being provided with cut-out portions formed within the surface thereof, the walls of the said cut-out portions being beveled throughout the entire width, rail chairs adapted to be seated within said cut-out portions, the faces of the said chairs being beveled to correspond with the beveled walls of the said cut-out portions, the said chairs and the said tie being further provided with registering openings formed at one side of the rail-engaging surface of the chair, a railfastening member seated within the said openings, and means including a wedge member adapted to extend transversely through the said fastening member to fasten the latter immovably with respect to the tie, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A device of the character described comprising a rail tie substantially T-shaped in cross section, a rail chair carried by said tie adapted to fit within cut-out portions formed upon the upper face thereof, a member projecting from one end of said chair adapted to overlap the base of a rail upon one side thereof, and a fastenin member extending through said chair and a portion of said tie, the head of which is adapted to overlap the face of said rail upon the opposite side from the said first mentioned memher, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
4. A device of the character described comprising a rail tie substantially T-shaped in cross section, a pair of rail chairs having angular faces adapted to fit within cut-out portions upon the upper face of said tie, and a member projecting from one end of said rail chair adapted to overlap one side of a rail base, of a fastening member comprising a head portion adapted to overlap the opposite side of said rail base and a depending portion adapted to extend through the said chair and upper rail portion for fastening the said chair and tie upon the rail, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
5. A device of the character described comprising a rail tie having an upper portion provided with an opening near each end thereof, a lower portion depending from said upper portion provided with openings in direct alinement with said first mentioned openings, rail chairs carried upon said rail. tie and adapted to fit within cut-out portions provided for that purpose and a member projecting from one end of and integral with each of said chairs adapted to overlap the base of a rail for holding the same thereupon, of a fastening member comprising a head portion adapted to overlap the base of said rail upon the opposite side from said chair member, a portion depending from said head portion adapted to pass through the said chair and through the said openings within the said head, and a wedge-shaped member extending transversely through the said depending member for holding the said fastening member in proper place, and for the purpose set forth and described.
