To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT E. MOGILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Perambulators, of which the following is a specification.

This application is a division of my application, Serial Number 279,577, filed in the United States Patent Oflice, September 22nd, 1905, Patent No. 1,053,422, issued Feb. 18, 1913, and the present invention relates in general to folding perambulators of the type embodying a running gear frame having supporting wheels foldable with respect thereto and a body structure supported by the frame and embodying a seat, which structure is also foldable with respect to the frame. 7

More particularly, the present invention relates to an improved foot-rest having means whereby the foot-rest may be readily suspended below the frame and as readily elevated to substantially a horizontal position and maintained in either of its adjusted positions.

To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and shown inthe accompanying drawing illustrating the invention, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a folding perambulator having a foot-rest applied thereto constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view partly in elevation and partly in section showing means by which the forward end of the foot-rest is supported and connected with the running gear frame,

Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of a perambulator showing another form of foot-rest; Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail sectional view on line 44, Fig. 5; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of Fig. 3.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates generally the running gear frame which may be of any suitable size and construction, but preferably comprises spaced side bars which are connected at their forward ends as at 11, and the running gear frame thus formed is supported by suitable wheels 12 having Wheel supports 13, which latter are foldable transversely with respect to the running gear frame.

In the present eXemplification of this invention, a body structure is supported by the running gear frame and this body structure comprises spaced side bars 14 which are pivotally connected at one end as at 15 to uprights 16 carried by the running gear frame and about which pivots the body structure is movable to fold and unfold with respect to the running gear frame. The body structure also embodies a seat 17 which is supported by flexible'members 18 forming the sides of the seat and which flexible members are connected in any suitable manner to the side bars 14 of the body structure. These side bars are supported by suitable braces 19, which braces are deflectable to permit the body structure to fold and unfold by the movement of the braces.

At the forward side of the seat 17 is arranged a foot-rest 20, which is preferably supported, in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by a bag-like extension of the bottom portion of the seat, comprising a back portion 21 contlnuing downwardly from the bottom of the seat 17, side portions 22, and a front portion 23, being provided at its upper edge with a cross bar 24: (see Fig. 2) having eyes 25 at each end, or anyother suitable means &whereby the forward portion 23 may be suspended from the body structure. Such susv pension of thi part is preferably effected by a pair of snap hooks 26 having their hookends engaging in the eyes 25 respectively,

and their other ends flexibly connected in any suitable way with a cross bar 15 arranged preferably over the connecting bar 11 between the side bars 10, longitudinally thereof, and if desired, constituting also the pivotal upport for the forward ends of the side bars 1 1. All of the side portions of this bag-like extension, which supports the footrest 20, are preferably constructed of leather or-any other suitable fabric so as to be capable of folding up with the various hinged members of the device; and when in use as a foot-rest, it assumes the position shown in Fig. 1, supported at its forward edge by the snap hooks 26; but when it is desired that the child assume a reclining position or lying down, the foot-rest 20 is elevated into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 the hooks 26 detached from the eyes 25 and hooked into any suitable attachment on the bottom of the foot-rest 20, preferably one or more rings 27 secured to the rear edge thereof. Thus it will be seen that when this bag-like extension which supports the foot-rest is elevated to its horizontal position, it constitutes an inclosure or cover for the childs feet, and for the wraps or bed-clothes that might be used in the carriage, and when so positioned, constitutes a continuation of the sides 18, thus completely housing the child while lying down and avoiding the possibility of the child rolling out. It will also be seen that when the baglike extension which supports the foot-rest is in its lowered position, it houses the feet and lower limbs of the child and precludes the possibility of the child inserting its feet between the spokes of the front wheels.

In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 to 5, the foot-rest is constituted by a straight extension 28 of the seat fabric, or any other suitable flexible extension, which has its forward end supported preferably on the under side of a cross-bar 29, by a clamping device comprising a bar 30 arranged under the cross-bar 29 to extend longitudinally thereof, with is extremities deflected as at 31, and which extremities pass through the cross-bar 29 and are threaded to receive the nuts or collars which latter engage the cross-bar 29, and by means of which nuts or collars the clamping bar 30 may be adjusted toward the cross-bar 29 to clamp the free extremity of the extension 28 between the cross-bar 29 and the clamping bar 30 to hold the foot-rest in the desired position, that is, either in its depending position as shown in full lines in Fig. 3 or in the substantially horizontal position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in which latter position the childs lower limbs will be supported in a horizontal position when lying down, the slack of the foot extension 33 being taken as desired by pulling it through the clamping bar 30 and the cross-bar 29. In this form of the invention the side bars let of the body structure are pivotally connected at their forward ends with the uprights 16 by means of the pivots 34 in the form of short pivots which do not extend entirely across the running gear frame so that it will not form an obstruction across the frame. The cross bar 29 is adjustable with respect to the running gear frame to lengthen or shorten the latter, and this is accomplished by means of the deflected extremities 35 of the cross-bar 29 which telescope into the extremities of the respective side bars 10 as shown more clearly in Fig. 5, thereby permitting the cross-bar to be thus adjusted to the desired length, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.

The seat 17 is provided with an adjustable back 36, and a handle 37 is pivotally connected to the running gear frame and is also connected with the braces 19 by means of links 38, whereby the folding and unfolding movement of the handle will cause a folding and unfolding movement of the body structure.

What is claimed as new is:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a seat supported thereby, an inclosed foot-rest operatively related to the seat and movable with reference thereto, and separate means on the footrest whereby the outer end thereof may be supported by the frame at different elevations.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a seat supported thereby, a foot-rest having one side flexibly connected with the seat, means at the opposite side for detacliably supporting the same upon the frame at one end, and additional means for supporting the front of the foot rest upon the frame at another elevation.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a seat supported thereby, a foot-rest comprising a bottom portion and flexible side and front and back portions, and means secured to the front portion and the bottom portion for supporting the forward side of the foot-rest at different elevations upon the frame.

4L. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, suitable supports therefor, a seat supported upon said frame, a flexible extension from the forward edge of the seat having an inflexible foot-rest, said extension being adapted to as sume either a depending position or a substantially horizontal position, and a connection carried by said extension and adapted to engage the outer end of the frame for holding the extension in a substantially horizontal position.

5. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, suitable supports therefor, a seat supported on said frame, a flexible extension from the forward side of the seat and comprising a foot-rest, said extension being adapted to assume both a depending position and a substantially horizontal position continuous with the seat, and fastening devices on the frame cooperating with the said extension for holding the front of the extension in a substantially horizontal position.

6. In a folding perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, suitable supports therefor, a seat supported upon said frame, a foot-rest, a flexible extension'of the seat supporting the foot rest below the frame, said extension being adapted to assume either a depending position or a substantially horizontal position, means for supporting the front of said extension in either of said positions, embodying a supporting element carried by the said extension.

7. In a perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, suitable supports therefor, a seat supported upon said frame, a foot-rest, a flexible extension from the seat secured to the rear side of the foot-rest, means detaehably supporting the front side of the foot-rest from the end of the running gear frame, and means also connected with the foot-rest whereby said flexible extension may be supported in a substantially horizontal position.

8. In a perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, suitable supports therefor, a seat supported by the frame, a foot r-est, a pliable support for the foot-rest arranged at the forward side of the seat and adapted to assume either a depending or a substantially horizontal position, and sup porting means for holding the said pliable support at said horizontal position, embodying a supporting member connected with the said pliable support and having connection with the frame.

9. In a perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, suitable supports for the same, a seat supported upon the frame, a pliable support for the foot-rest located at the forward side of the seat and adapted to assume either a depending or a substantially horizontal position, said pliable support comprising pliable front, back and side portions from the lower edges of which said foot-rest is suspended, and supporting means for holding said pliable support in its horizontal position comprising a supporting member connected with the pliable support and adapted to be connected with the run ning gear frame.

10. In a perambulator, the combination of a running gear frame, suitable supports for the same, a seat supported upon the frame, a pliable support for the foot-rest located at the forward side of the seat and adapted to assume either a depending or a substantially horizontal position, said pliable support comprising pliable front, back and side portions from the lower edge of which said foot-rest is suspended, and supporting means for holding said pliable support in its horizontal position comprising a supporting device connected with the running gear frame and also with the pliable support.

11. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a seat supported thereby, a foot rest positioned at the forward end of said seat and substantially within said frame, and means for supporting said foot rest in raised or lowered position relatively to said seat.

12. The combination of a frame, a seat supported substantially within said frame, a foot rest flexibly supported at the forward end of said seat substantially within the forward end of said frame and adapted to be raised and lowered relatively to the seat, and means for holding said foot rest in either position.

13. The combination of a frame, a seat supported substantially within said frame, an adjustable foot rest positioned substantially within said frame between said seat and the forward end of the frame, and means for holding said foot rest in any of its adjusted positions.

14:. The combination of an open frame comprising side members and a forward end member, a seat positioned between the side members of said frame, an adjustable foot rest positioned in the forward portion of said frame between said seat and said end member, and means for holding said foot rest in its adjusted positions.

15. The combination of an open frame comprising side members and a forward member, a seat positioned between said side members, a foot rest flexibly connected to the forward end of said seat and positioned between said side members and adapted to be swung to various angular positions relatively to the seat, and means for holding said foot rest in any of its adjusted positions.

16. The combination of an open frame comprising side members and end members, a seat supported between said side members, a bag-like foot rest forming substantially a continuation of said seat, said foot rest being positioned in the forward portion of said frame between the side members thereof and normally depending below said frame, and means for holding said foot rest in various angular positions relatively to said seat.

17. The combination of an open frame comprising side members and a forward connecting end member, a seat supported between said side members and at some distance rearwardly from said end member, a pliable bag-like foot rest forming substantially a continuation of said seat and adapted to be adjusted to various angular positions relatively to the seat, said foot rest being positioned substantially within the space between the side members and end member of said frame and said seat, and depending below said frame, and means codperating with said frame for holding the foot rest in its various adjusted positions.

18. The combination of a frame comprising side members and a cross connecting end member, a seat supported between said side members, a pliable member forming substantially a continuation of said seat and normally positioned between said side ineinhas, afoot rest attached to said pliable member, and means for holding said foot 5 rest in various angular positions relatively to the seat.
