Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Apr. 28. 1914.
Divided antltlis application filed November 15, 1912. Serial No. 731,503.
To all whom it may rome/"1a,
Be ity known that l, Lrsui:
MAN, a suhjeet ol the King` ot (ireal Brit-- ain and Ireland, previously reeidinlgj at 2li-l Alliert street` in the post-town of East Melbourne, a suburh of the City ot Melhourne. in the county of Bourke, State of Vietoria. Commonwealth ot Australia. and later aty "Killeen," Grey street.` hut now at 32 Carlyle. street, hoth in the city of St, Kilda.y a suhurh of the city of; Melhourne aforesaid. have invented certain new and uaeful lnr provernentb4 in Line-Spacing Meehanisni for i Type-limiting laehines. ot whieh the t'oi lowing la a speeitimuion.
This invention relatea` to typewriting nia- ChineI ha ving a alidinir earriaee earrvinnr a f e I? l The features of novelty will he hereinafter pointed out in the appended elaims.
Referring.;` to the drawing# which forni a part ol this aperitieation:"Figure l is a view Showing portion ot' a paper roller and mechanism for adjusting the amount ot, the rotary travel ot' the said roller. Fig. 2 is a view showing' a erank lever rai-lying a tripper. By the lever the paper roller is turned. Fig. B is a sectional plan view of they erank lever Seen in Fig. Q. Fig. 4 is a view showing mechanism hy which the crank levenaeen in Fig. Q may he operated hy a key. u Fig. 5 is `a view of one end of the carriage of a typewriting machine lookingr at the inside ofthe Haine and showing the relationship hetween various parta` for turning the-paper roller. Fig. (l is a trout pei-sportive view of a typewriting inaehine willi this invention applied. i
The invention ineludes a framework Slidaloly Carried hy the framework is a iar liage 5 of any suitable eonstruetion. The, farriageis eontrolled hy a rilihon tension spring intermittently releaaed hy the depression of keys as is usual. the Carriage movinnF from the right toward the left'hand end et the framework each time a key is depiessed. Mounted upon an axle Q1 earried hy the rari-lager 5 is a rotatable paper roller HA RoLi) FRmi i 22 having at itsI right hand end a rati-het wheel or ring;- QS. Mounted on the right hand enl ol' the axle 21, adjaeent the ratrhet rini;l 23E. is a lixetl racked sector 34, A\djoin ing the set-tor lf-l. and movahly mounted upon the axle 2l. is an adjuStiirL deviee 25 having*r a limit stop 2li. The adjusting deviee :5 also carries a linger operated retention pin 2T engaging with the lixed raeked seetfr 24. Movably aeeommodated by the axle 21 is the inner end ot a lever 25. fleeured to the Said lever is thel outer end ot a eushioningi` plate springt 29, In the upper end ot' the Said lever is a hole Z50 and pivoted to the raid upper end. hy a pivot pin ill. is a pawl 32. lrojefting t'roni the pawl 32, and engaging inA the hole RO. i a pin 3B. Pivoted hy a pivot pin IllV to the pawl 3; is the inner end of a link 555. 4livoted to the outer end ot' the link 35. h v a` pivot pin 3G, is the upper arm 37 ot' a erank lever. rl`he erank lever. h i.' a Stud 23S. ia pivotally seeured to the arriage 5. livoted hy a pivot pin B9 to the lower arm 40 of the erank lever a tripper 41 ha vinga limit lip 4L). ('arried hy the trip'perll is a roller 4., and eontrollingl the said. tripper in its relationship to the Crank llever is a spring 44. livolally ronA netted to the lower arin l() of the Crank lever is the lower end of a link 45. The upper end of the Lsaid link 4T is pivoted to the inner end ol a lever 413. The olliter end ot' the lever 4G is Seeured to a hand rod 47 having a linger extension 4h. It desired` however. the link 45. lever 4G and hand rod 4T may lie dispensed with as the.Y are provided for eonvenienee only.
Seeured al the right hand end 3 of the framework 2. lielow the earring@ 5, is a detleetor 49. having a til-st pathway 50, and a ser-ond pathway 51. 'lhe roller 43 of the tripper 41 engragw tho pathways 5() and 5l as will he hereinafter explained.
llnganing with the upper arm 37 of the Prank lever aforementioned the free and inner end oi' a link 52. Formed in the said tree end, is a mouth 53 adjoining whieh is a projection 54. livoted liy a pivot pin 55 to the outer end of the link is the upper end of the lever 5G. The lower end ot the lever 5G seeurod to the right hand end oi a Spindle 5T Carried hy the Carriage. Seeured to the lett hand end ot' the spindle 57 is a toothed seetor 58. Engaged by the Seetor 58 a longitudinal tinted Spindle 59 sector 24.
mounted in bearings in the framework. Secured to the lett hand end ol' the tluted spindle 5t) is the lower end of a lever G0. Pivoted by a pivot pin (il to the upper end ol' the lever titi is the upper end ot' a connecting rod o?. The lower end ot the connecting rod t3! pivoted by a'pivot pin G3 to a key lever G4, attached to which is a key G5. The lever (El may be pivoted to another key lever or to the framework.
The cycle oli operations with this inven tion is as t'oliows:Y the carriage is returned from the end of a line it Vwill he plain, that the roller i3 upon the tripper 4l engages with the pathway 51 of the deflector fld. This operates the atoredcscribed crank Fever which by its upper arm 3T oper-l ates the link Z55 throwing the pawl 3;) into en gagement with the ratchet ring 23 at the end ofthe roller Q2. The roller 22 is thus turned autonuitically as the carriagey returns. Upon the carriage moving normally, it will be seen that the tripper il being pivoted to move in one direction only engages with the pathway 50 ot the dellector it) and turns or pivots upon the pivot. pin 39. The crank lever therefore does not operate when the carriage 5 is so moving and the roller 22 is not then turned. Should it be desired to turn the paper roller betore the end of a line reached the key 435 is depressed drawing downwardlyv the connecting rod G2'. By the tluted roller 59 and toothed sector 58 the spindle 5." and leverl oo now operate the link This engages with the upper arm 37 of the crank leve 'which operates the link 35 and ratchet. ring 23 as described. lVhen the carriage 5 is returning the toothed sector 58 carried by the carriage slidesl along the tiuted roller 59 carried by the framework 2. Upon the carriage being returned before it has reached the end of a line it is obvious that the paper cannot be .automatically turned by the trip )er 41 and delieetor t9 as the link 52 will in engagement as described, with the upper arm 37 of the trippers crank lever, the lower arm 40 of which will consequently have lifted or elevated the trip er clear of the detlector 49. Should it be desired to turn the paper by hand the linger catch 48 of the hand rod i7 is moved and by the lever 4G and link 45 operates the crank lever, link 35 and pawl 32 as aforedescribed.
To adjust the amount ol' turn given to the roller 22 any ordinary mechanism may be used, that illustrated being of a common nature. To operate the adjusting device 25 the Aretention pin 2T is removed from engagement with the racked sector 24 and placed within another notch ot the said 'l'his adjusts the limit stop 26 in relation to the lver Qtr; thereby altering the throw ot the link 35.
