To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN W. STRAGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Machine for Making lVire-Fence Stays; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful machine for forming and twisting a wire fence stay.
As one of the objects of the invention, it is the aim to provide a machine of this nature having a wire twisting device, between which and a yieldably mounted device or member the wire forming the stays is connected, there being a series of loop formers intermediate the twisting device and the yieldaloly mounted member for forming loops to be secured by twisting or otherwise to the horizontal wires of a fence.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an arm slidably guided upon a bar angular in cross section, for holding the yieldably supported member, and said arm is composed of two sections, one of which that carries the yieldably mounted member may be thrown upwardly, whereby the yieldably mounted member may be disposed outof alinement with the twisting device. The arm is held adjustably upon the bar by means of a thumb screw.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pivoted member, on which the loop formers are adjustably mounted, there being means for supporting the said pivoted member, said means which consists of a drop arm, which may be so disposed when the pivoted member is thrown down wardly, as to be grasped readily, whereby the pivoted member may be thrown back into position, and then act to support the pivoted member. The said drop .arm may be swung from under the pivoted member, in order to allow the same to swing downwardly, in the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
In practical fields the minor details of construction may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.

In the drawings :'Figure l is a view in perspective of the improved machine for making wire fence stays. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail view, showing how the drop arm is mounted on the pivoted member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a platform, rising from which at each end and secured thereto is a casting. One of the castings is designated by the numeral 2, while the other is denoted by the numeral 3. The securing means of the castings are the screws 4 or bolts or the like.-
The castings 2 and 3 are connected by a guide bar 5, which is angular in cross section, as shown in Fig. 2. Pivotally mounted in bearings 6 of the castings is a pivoted member consisting of a rod 7 having an offset bar or portion 8. A plurality of loop formers 9 are provided. These loop formers are mounted upon said rod 8, and held in adjusted positions by the thumb bolts or set screws 10, which are threaded through the sides of the U-shaped portions of the loop formers, in order to hold the same on the bar 8. Each loop former is constructed with laterally extending anvils l1, upon which wire may be held, whereby the same may be cut or bent. Projecting upwardly from each loop former is a lug 12, about which the wire forming a stay may be wrapped, for forming a loop 13*.
The casting 2 is. provided with two bearings l3 and 14. In the bearing 13 a stub shaft 15 is mounted, held in place by the thumb screw 16. Rotatably mounted upon the stub shaft 15 is a gear 17, having a handle 18. J ournaled in the bearing 14 is the shank 18 of the wire twisting arm 19, which is provided with a hooked end 20 to receive one of the looped ends 21 of the wire, which forms a stay. In the drawings, however, there are two strands, but it is to be understood that any number of strands may be utilized for forming a fence stay. In some instances the notch 22 of the twister may re- On the other end of the shank 18 of wire twisting arm 19, from th hooked end 20, and on the opposite side of the bearing 14 from the hooked end 20, there is keyed to such shank, in any suitable manner (not shown), by a pinion, a small cog-wheel 23, which meshes with the teeth of the gear 17, whereby as the gear 17 is rotated, revoluble motion is imparted to the twister, whereby the wire forming the wire fence stay may be twisted. V hen the wire is in place, the drop-arm 38 is withdrawn either forward or backward from its vertical position, as a result of which the ofiset portion or bar 8 of the piv oted device, is dropped, thereby releasing the lugs 12 of the loop formers, thus leaving the wire suspended between the pins of the plate 26 and the hooked end 20 of the wire twisting arm 19. In twisting the wire, the gear 17 is rotated until two or more parts or strands of the wire thus suspended are twisted or woven together until the entire stay is completed. The loop end 24 of the wire stay engages the pin or pins 25 of the plate 26, which is provided with an extension 27 (which is rectangular in cross section) extending through the section 28 of the arm 29. A coil spring 30 is interposed between the section 28 and a washer 31, which is held upon the extension by the cotter pin. The section 28 is pivoted at 33 to the section 3a of the arm, and when the wire is disconnected from the pin of the plate 26, the section 28 of the arm may be thrown upwardly, so as to be supported in such position as shown in dotted lines at 35 in Fig. 2. In order to pivot the two sections together, the section 34. is bifurcated to receive the tongue 36 of the section 28-. The section 3a is constructed with an angular opening 37 to receive the bar 5, upon which it is held in adjusted positions by the set screw 37. The arm may be disposed at different locations upon the bar 5, it depending entirely upon the length of the wire fence stay.
Pivotally mounted upon the offset portion or bar 8 of the pivoted device is a drop arm 38, which is disposed vertically, in order to hold the pivoted member in the position shown in Fig. 1. In order to allow the pivoted member to swing downwardly, the drop arm 38 may be thrown in the direction of the arrow 39, then the pivoted member and the drop arm will assume positions as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In order to throw the pivoted member including the bar 8 back to the position shown in Fig. 1, the operator may grasp the drop arm shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and raise the pivoted member upwardly and forwardly, and after the pivoted member is raised, the drop arm may be released by the operator, in which case the lug 4E0 will limit the drop arm-in its vertical position. When the pivoted member is allowed to swing downwardly, the end portions of the same contact with the bar 5, thereby limiting the pivoted member in its vertical position.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a machine for forming wire fence stays, the combination with a longitudinal guide bar, end castings connected to the ends of the guide bar, a twisting device swivele in one of the castings, an arm adjustably secured upon the guide bar, a member yieldably mounted in the end of said arm, between which member and the twisting device the wire forming the stay is to be connected, of a pivoted member mounted on the castings, a plurality of loop formers adjustably mounted upon the pivoted member, about each one of which the wire is to be coiled, a drop arm pivoted on the pivoted member to support the same, said drop arm acting as means to be grasped by an operator for restoring the pivoted member to its raised position, said guide bar acting as an abutment to be engaged by the ends of the pivoted member to limit the same in position when swung downwardly, and means for operating the twisting device.
2. In a machine for forming wire fence stays, the combination with a longitudinal guide bar, end castings connected to the ends of the guide bar, a twisting device swiveled in one of the castings, an arm adjustably secured upon the guide bar, a member yieldably mounted in the end of said arm, between which member and the twisting device the wire forming the stay is to be connected, of a pivoted member mounted on the castings, a plurality of loop formers adjustably mounted upon the pivoted member, about each one of which the wire is to be coiled, a drop arm pivoted on the pivoted member to support the same, said drop arm acting as means to be grasped by an operator for restoring the pivoted member to its raised position, said guide bar acting as an abutment to be engaged by the ends of the pivoted member to limit the same in position when swung downwardly, an abutment lug on said pivoted member to limit the drop arm to a vertical position and means for operating the twisting device.
3. In a machine for forming wire fence stays, the combination of a pair of end castings, a longitudinal guide bar connecting said castings, a twisting device swiveled in one of the castings, an arm adjustably secured upon the guide bar and havin a pivoted end section, a member yielda bly mounted in said end section, said end sec-' tion adapted to be thrown vertically to hold said yieldably mounted member from alinement with the pivoted device, the wire forming the stay adapted to be connected between said member and the twisting device, a pivoted member mounted in said castings, a plurality of loop formers adjustably mounted upon the pivoted member, about each of which formers the wire is adapted to be coiled, a drop arm pivoted on the pivoted member to support the same, said drop arm acting as means to be grasped by an operator for restoring the pivoted member to its raised position, said guide bar acting as an abutment to be engaged by the ends of the pivoted member to limit the same in position when swung downwardly, means for operating the twisting device, and an 10 abutment 111g carried by the pivoted member to limit the drop arm in a vertical po sition when the pivoted member is raised.
