JULIAN KENNEDY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
MILL-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914.
Application filed April 17, 1913. Serial No. 761,740.
To all 1072 0022 it may concern Be it known that I, JULIAN KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mill-Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view partly 1n sect1on of a portion of a mill table embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail view of a portion of the gearing; Fig. 3 is a section on the line IIIIII of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section partly broken away; Fig. 5 is a partial transverse section showlng a modification; and Fig. 6 is a detail view showing another modification.
My invention has relation to mill tables of the roller type, such as are used 1n connection with rolling mills, etc. and is designed to provide a simple and durable table construction which can be manufactured and installed at a comparatively low cost.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown the preferred embodiment thereof, and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the various parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates the side members of the table frame, which are shown as consisting each of a vertically placed channel.
3 designates the rolls. Each of these rolls consists of a hollow cylinder reinforced by suitable internal spiders 4:, which carry hub portions 5. These hubs portions 5 are journaled on fiXed shafts 6. These shafts are secured in the side members 2, being provided with reduced threaded end portions 7 which extend through the webs of the channels and one of which receives the nut 8 and the other the nut 9.
l0 designates cap plates against which the nuts 9 are screwed.
Each of the nuts 8 is preferably provided with a lubricant channel 11, communicating at one end with a channel 12, in the shaft 6. and which opens to the bearing surface of one of the hubs 5, and at its other end communicating with a lubricant supply pipe 13. The opposite end portion of the shaft has a lubricant supply channel 14: which is shown as connected with an oil cup 15.
The numeral 16 designates the two sections of a divided side drive shaft, which is journaled in bearing 17, secured to the channel members 2. The two sections of this shaft are driven by a shaft 18, through the miter gears 18*. The shaft 18 is shown as being driven by an electric motor 19. Each section of the side shaft carries a plurality of miter gears 20, whose peripheral portions project through slots 21 into the web of one of the channel members 2, into driving engagement with beveled gears 22, formed integral with or secured to the ends of the rolls 3. As the roll 3 directly opposite the driving shaft 17 cannot be conveniently driven from either of the shaft sections 16, I provide for driving this roll through the medium of spur gears 23 and 24, and the interposed idler 25. The gear 24 is on the end of one of the adjacent rolls,
The numeral 26 designates guard members for the ends of the rolls, one of these being shown as secured to the side members 2 and projecting over the ends of the rolls. For wider tables, such as those used in plate mills, in which the periphery of the roll should be flush with or slightly above the upper surface vide the modified construction shown in Fig. 5. In this construction the miter gears 27 on the ends of the rolls are of smaller diameter than the body of the roll, and the side guard 28 is made of different form so as to overhang the gears. Instead of using miter gears for driving the rolls, I may use any other suitable form of drive, such as the friction drive 29 of Fig. 6, and which constitutes another form of bevel gears.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, since it provides a very simple, compact and durable of the side frames, I may pro" construction, which can be manufactured and 7 installed at a cost greatly below that of the usual construction. By setting the side drive shaft section 16 closely up to the webs of the channel members 2, and causing the gears of said sections to work through slots in the webs of said members, I am enabled to get a direct drive upon the rolls and thus enable the latter to be mounted upon fixed shafts. This avoids the necessity for rotary roll shafts extending out through the side members and carrying the driving gears; and also simplifies the arrangement of the roll and side shaft bearings.
I claim:
1. A mill table comprising side members, a fixed roll shaft secured in said members, a roll journaled on said shaft, and a beveled driving gear directly engaging the end of the roll and working through an opening in one of the side members, substantially as described.
2. A mill table comprising parallel side members, one of which has openings therethrough, fixed roll shafts secured in said members, rolls journaled on said shafts, a side drive shaft journaled in bearings secured to the last named side member and at substantially right angles to the roll shafts, and driving gears on said shaft and on the rolls, said gears being in direct engagement with each other through one of said members, substantially as described.
3. A mill table comprising side members, one of which has openings therein, a series of fixed shaftssecured in said side members, rolls journaled on said shafts and having gear portions at one end, a sectional side drive shaft mounted in bearings secured to the side member having the openings, means for driving the sections of said shaft, the table roll opposite the adjacent ends of the shaft section having spur gear connections with an adjacent roll, and driving gears on the shaft sections engaging the gear portions on the other rolls through said openings, substantially as described.
4;. A mill table comprising side members, one of which has openings therein, a series of shafts secured in said side members, rolls journaled on said shafts and having beveled gear portions at one end, a sectional side drive shaft mounted in bearings secured to the side member having openings and at substantially right angles to the fixed shafts, a bevel gear connected to each section of the side drive shaft, a driving shaft extending at right angles to the sectional side drive shaft, a bevel gear connected to the driving shaft and meshing with the bevel gears on the sections of the sectional drive shaft, and a plurality of bevel gears mounted on the sectional side drive shaft, said bevel gears extending through the openings in the side member and meshing with the bevel gear portions on the ends of the rolls; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
JULIAN KENNEDY.
