COMBINED PIPE-FITTING, VALVE, AND SEPARATOR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined PipeFitting, Valve, and Separator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section illustrating one use of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the combined fitting, valve,and separator, with the cap for the separator chamsame.
My invention has relation to a combined fitting, valve and separator for steam lines, and is designed to provide a device in the nature of a universal fitting for pipe lines which also forms a valve and a steam separator.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to'the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown a pre ferred embodiment thereof and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
The device consists of a hollow box-like casting 2, of approximately cubical form, and having in at least four of its sides the openings, such as indicated at 3, 4, 5 and 6. Each of these openings is formed with a surrounding bolting flange 7, which may be connected with the body of the casting by a neck 8, as shown in the case of the openings 4, 5 and 6, or which may directly surround the opening, as shown in the case of the opening 3. The opening 3 is provided with a bushing 9, whose outer face forms a valve seat. This bushing is of spider-like form, its central hub portion 10 forming a bearing for the threaded valve rod or stem 11. This rod extends transversely through the device and through a stufiing box 12, in the opposite wall thereof, and is provided at its outer projecting end with a hand wheel 13, or other suitable operating means. cave plate or disk, having its inner concave surface opposite the valve seat and formed wlth a plurality of separating ribs or corrugations 15. This valve and separator mem ber is located within a separator chamber 16, which is formed by a separate casting 17, provided with a bolting flange 18, which is bolted or otherwise removably secured to the bolting flange 7 around the opening 3. In Fig. 1, I have shown the device as ap plied to a steam pipe 24, which may be, for
instance, an exhaust steam main or line,
while the pipe 25, connected to the separating chan1ber,'may be a pipe leading to a heating system. The opening 6 is shown in this figure as being closed by a suitable cap 26, but in some cases, this opening will be left unclosed and will communicate with a pipe leading to a feed water heater or other place of steam consumption or to another separator similar to the separator 16.
Mounted on the bolting flange of the opening 4 is a relief valve casing 27, provided with a valve seat 28. 29 is a valve carried by a stem 30, which is engaged by an arm 31 of a transverse rock shaft 32, whose outer end portion is shown as counterweighted at 33, and also provided with a dash pot device at 34. This relief valve is shown for the purpose of illustrating the invention, but in its details forms no part of the present invention. The relief valve casing is formed with an opening 35, which communicates with a suitable stack 36, exhausting to the atmosphere. The relief valve is controlled by the counterweight and dash pot, so as to be opened by any excess of pressure in the system.
It will be readily seen that the fitting can be used in a variety of different positions, either horizontal or vertical; that it can be provided with openings and bolting flanges in any desired number of sides, the openings, which are not in use in any particular case being closed either by capping or plugging. The separator chamber can be rotated to any desired position to suit different positions of the fitting proper, and so that the portion 19 thereof will always depend in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent.
Heretofore, it has been customary to provide steam lines with separate fitting, valve and separator members placed at difi'erent points in the line.
My invention provides a combined fitting, valve and separator which can be placed in the steam line at any desired point, thus obviating the necessity for separate fittings.
The device may be used either as a straight fitting or as an angle fitting, and is adapted to a wide variety of uses.

A combined fitting, valve, and separator, comprising a hollow member having a plurality of openings including a steam inlet opening and a main steam exit opening and attaching means at different sides there 7 of, a valve carried by the member and adapted to control the 'main steam exit opening and also to form a separator plate, and a separator chamber inclosing the valve and secured to the fitting proper, substantially as described.
2. A combined fitting, valve, and steam separator, comprising a hollow member having a plurality of its sides provided with openings including a steam inlet opening and a main steam exit opening, a separator chamber adjustably secured to one of said sides over the said main exit opening opening therein, and a combined separator and valve carried by the member and arranged to control the opening into the separator chamber, the separator chamber also having an outlet connection, substantially as described. 3. A combined pipe fitting, valve, and separator, comprising a hollow member having a steam inlet opening, a main steam outlet opening, another steam outlet opening, a relief valve controlling the last named outlet opening, a combined valve and separator controlling the main outlet opening, and a separator chamber secured to the exterior of said member over the main outlet opening and inclosing said valve said chamber also having a steam outlet connection to convey the steam passing into the chamber to a place of consumption; substantially as described.
4. A combined pipe fitting, valve, and separator, comprising a hollow member having openings in different sides thereof, one of said openings having a valve seat at the outer end, a combined valve and separator plate adapted to said seat, and a separator chamber secured to the said member and inclosing the valve, said separator chamber having an outlet opening, and an internal bafile plate between the lower wall of said opening and the valve plate, substantially as described.
5. A pipe-fitting having a steam inlet opening and a main steam outlet opening, a steam separating chamber secured to the outer side of the fitting over said main outlet opening, and steam controlling and separating means within the separator chamber said fitting also having another steam outlet and an automatic relief valve controlling said outlet and the separating chamber also having a. through steam passage; substantially as described.
6. A pipe-fitting having a steam inlet opening and a main steam outlet opening, a steam separating chamber secured to the outer side of the fitting over said main outlet opening, and steam controlling and separating means within the separator chamber, said separator having a through steam passage, and also means for taking care of the separated oil and water; substantially as described.
7. A pipe-fitting having a steam inlet opening, a main steam outlet opening, and a relief opening a relief valve controlling said opening, a separator chamber into which the main steam out-let opens said chamber being secured to the outer side of the fitting, and a valve controlling the flow into said chamber and also forming a separator for the steam the separator chamber also having a through steam passage; substantially as described.
8. A pipe fitting having a steam inlet opening, a main steam outlet opening, an auxiliary outlet opening, a relief valve controlling the auxiliary outlet opening, an outwardly opening valve controlling the main outlet opening, said valve having its inner face formed with steam-separating projections, and a separator chamber secured to the outer side of the fitting and inclosing the valve said chamber also having a steam outlet connection to convey the steam therefrom to a place of consumption, substantially as described.
