In the embodiment of the invention illus trated herein a printing surface support 1 is shown which is in the general form of a section of a hollow cylinder. The said support is adapted for'use with a printing surface of any nature, such as relief, inta'glio or planographic. It is illustrated herein, however, as used with a planographic surface. The ma terial of which the said support is made may be of such a nature as to formpart of a planographic printing surface and may constitute the ink-rejecting or non-design art f the drawings a surface of this nature is contemplated and is indicated by the reference numeral 2. In the form shown in Fig. 6 of7 the drawings the printing surface is carried ulpon a separate plate which is mounted upon t e support in a manner known to the art. The said support 1 is provided with transverse webs 3 which may be placed at the ends of the said support and may also be placed intermediate of the ends. These webs are so disposed and proportioned as to give the plate proper rigidity against flexure or deformation from handling, or from yielding while under impression. While the said support may be thus constructed sufliciently strong in itself to withstand all pressures and strains incident to use, a form of cylinder especially designed for use with a printing surface support of this character, and which acts to take up a large part of the strain and pressure during the impression, is provided. The cylinder 1s shown with portions 4 of such radius as to fit snugly within said support 1 so as to take up the squeeze of the impression so that there may be no yielding or deformation of the saidsupport. The said cylinder is provided with recesses 5 at the ends thereof for taking in the end transverse webs 3 of the support, and where there are internal transverse webs carried by the. support transverse recesses 6 in the cylinder are provided for receiving same. These various corresponding parts are made to fit each other in an exact manner, and thus it will be seen that the cylinder 4 backs up the support l in such manner as to prevent any deformation or yielding from the squeeze of impressions and the support is also held in exact register in every respect. Holding means, in addition, may be provided and are shown as a pin 7 upon the su port 1' and hook 8 upon the cylinder 2. T e said hook may be provided with a slot 9 in which a tap num, may be deposited thereon in suitable manner, as by electro-depositipn or by dipping and a suitable design may be imposed thereon in any desired manner.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a printing surface support has been provided which is of great strength and rigidity while verse webs,
' cylinder having a at the same time ossessing great lightness; that a press cylin er has been provided especially adapted for use With the said surface support; that the said cylinder takes up directly the strain or pressure of the impres sion; that the said support is held in exact register by the said cylinder, and is yet readily removable therefrom when desired, as well as possessing other advantages.
The invention, in its broader aspects, is not limited to the particular constructions shown, nor to any particular constructions by which it has been or may be carried into effect, as many changes may be made in the construction without departing from the main principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

3. The combination with a printing surface support in the form of a section of a hollow cylinder provided with transverse webs at the ends, thereof, of a press cylinder having a portion of such radius as to fit within the said printing surface support and having shoulders or projections at the ends whereon the said transverse webs of the printing surface support may rest.
4. The combination with a printing surface support in the form of a hollow cylinder and provided with a plurality of transof a press cylinder having a portion of such radius as to fit within the said printing surface support and having transverse recesses for receiving the transverse webs of the said printing surface support.
5.-The combination with a printing surface support in the form of a section of a hollow cylinder provided with websupon the concave side thereof and arranged perpendicularly to the axis thereof, of a press portion of such radius as to fit, within the said printing surface support, and having transverse recesses for receiving the webs upon the printing surface support, and having cut-away shoulders or projections at the ends thereof for supporting certain of the said webs.
6. The combination with a printing surface support in the form of a section of a hollow cylinder provided with webs upon the concave side thereof and arranged perpendicularly to the axis thereof, of a press cylinder having a portion of such radius as to fit within the said printing surface support, so as to afford a backing therefor, a pivoted hook upon one of the said members, means adapted to be engaged by the hook on the other of said members, and
' means for holding the said hook in engaging position.
7. A support for a printing surface including in combination a member in the form of a section of a hollow cylinder, reinforcing means connected thereto, and means on said member for holding a flexible printing plate, said reinforcing means being arranged also to keep the support in place 1. 8. The combination with a support for a printing surface in the form of a section of a hollow cylinder and having reinforcing means on the concave side thereof, of a cylinder shaped to fit within and to contact with the concave surface of said printing surface support.
9. The combination with a support for a printing surface in the form of a section of a hollow cylinder and having a plurality of webs on the concave side, of a cylinder having recesses to receive said webs and being shaped to contact with and support the inner side of said printing surface support between the webs.
10. The combination of a rotatable structure, a removable segment formed to carry a printing surface, transverse webs on the concave side of the segment, the rotatable structure having seats for the segment on the outer sides of the webs, and having space occupied by said webs.
11. The combination of a rotatable structure, a removable segment having means on its convex side for carrying a printing device and having a transverse web on its concave side, said rotatable structure being formed to support the concave side of the segment and having space for the web, and ahook for removably locking the rotatable structure and segment together.
12. The combination of a rotatable structure having cylindrical supporting surfaces, a removable segment adapted to seat on said surfaces, transverse stiffening webs on the concave side of the segment, there being space on the rotatable structure to accommodate said webs, a printing surface on the convex side of the segment, and means for locking the segment to the rotatable structure.
13. The combination of a member having a pair of partially cylindrical supports, a removable segment, the concave side of which is adapted to rest directly on said supports, a transverse stiffening web rigid with the segment on its concave side and adapted to stand between said supports on the mem ber, and means for locking the segment to the member.
14. The combination, with a support for a printing surface in the form of a section of a hollow cylinder having a plurality of webs on its concave side, and a cylinder-like member having space .to receive said webs and being shaped to contact with and support the concave side of said printing surace.
15. The combination, with a-support for 15 a printing surface in the form of a section of shape carried by one of said members to engage the other.
