UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT HANKEY, OF GALLOWAY, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 EDWARD NELSON, OF GALLOWAY, WISCONSIN.
ELEVATOR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT HANKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galloway, in the county of Marathon, State of iVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to elevators for loading sacks of potatoes in cars and has for an object to provide anextremely simple and inexpensive platform that will lift the sacks of potatoes on an incline from the car floor, provision being made for a quick return of the platform to initial position.
A further object is to provide an elevator the frame of which may be made of gas pipe or like inexpensive and strong material, and will include but four lengths of the pipe bent. to form side arches between which the elevator is supported.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it be ing understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention :Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the platform in full lines in lowest position and in dotted lines in highest position. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4-41 Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 55 Fig. 3 showing the rod which slidably connects the platform at the front edge to the sides of the frame. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view on the line 66 Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a base which is supported upon four small casters 11. Upon the top face of the base near the side edges and at the rear edge are a pair of spaced wood blocks 12 and bolted to these blocks are the rear vertical side members 13 of the frame, these members being preferably formed from gas pipe. Bolted to the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 11, 1913.

Serial No. 778,539.
top face of the base and sloping upwardly and rearwardly therefrom are the front side members 1 1 of the frame, these members being also preferably formed of gas pipe. A pair of wood blocks 15 are superposed above the blocks 12 and to the blocks 15 are bolted the upper ends of the respective front and rear side members of the frame.
The elevator platform 16 is mounted between the front side members 14 of the frame by means of a bar 17 which is secured along the front bottom edge of the platform 16 and is terminally equipped with eyes 18 which loosely encircle the members 14. A pair of open loop side rails 19 are secured to the top face of. the elevator platform near the rear end thereof and coact with an arched back rail 20 in confining a bag of roved through sheaves 26 carried upon the inner faces of the upper blocks 15, the ca bles being thence trained obliquely downwardly and connected terminally to the tops of the loop side members 19 of the elevator platform. Upon rotation of the Windlass the cables will be wound thereupon and will lift the elevator platform obliquely upwardly on the front members of the sides of the frame.
The end of one of the rods 22 is squared and mounted thereupon is a ratchet wheel 27, and also mounted thereupon is a crank handle 28 for rotating the windlass. A pawl 29 is mounted on a bracket 30 carried upon the underlying block 12 and operatively engages the ratchet wheel. The pawl is in the nature of a handle lever which is provided terminally with a grip 81 that extends along the side of the adjacent front side member of the frame as shown in Fig. 1. When the platform has been raised by winding the cables upon the Windlass, and it is desired to return the platform quickly to its initial position, the grip 31 may be depressed whereby the pawl is released from the ratchet wheel and the Windlass is freed to unwind and permit of a quick gravitation of the platform.
In operation the device is positioned on the car floor and the sack of potatoes to be raised up to the top of the pile in the car is placed upon the platform. The platform is now raised by winding the Windlass until the platform is on a level with the top of the pile, whereupon the sack may be removed therefrom, and the platform quickly returned to initial position by releasing the pawl as above described.
For preventing spreading of the side members of the frame, a forwardly arched bridge bar 32 is terminally secured to the upper blocks 15 nearthe front ends of the latter as shown in Fig. 2. By virtue of the bowed contour of this bar the platform can pass upwardly without obstruction, while at the same time the bar rigidly reinforces the side members of the frame against spreading.
What is claimed, is
An elevator including a base, a frame rising from said base and comprising spaced side members, each side member including upper and lower blocks, a rear vertical member connecting both blocks, a front upwardly and rearwardly inclined member connected to the base and to the upper block, means for I preventing displacement of said side members comprising a single horizontally disposed outwardly bowed bar terminally connected to the upper blocks of the side members, a platform between said side members, 1
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT HANKEY. Vitnesses CARL L. Rosrrorxr, En VnsAN.
