residing at Ukiah, in the county of Men docino and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Car-Fender, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in that type of street car fenders in,
My present invention in its more specific nature embodies certain improvements on the type of car fender generally outlined in my Patent #1,012,392, December 19, 1911,
that provide a positively acting and eflicient fender and in which is included means for holding the object on the pick-up in such a manner that danger of the same rolling oil; or being crushed as it is carried forward, is reduced to the minimum. a
My present invention consists in the improved construction of car fender, hereinafter fully described, specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front end of a car, with my improved fender mechanism, the same being shown as down and extended for carrying the object struck. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the fender devices being at their up or folded position. Fig. 3 is a front view of a car body with my fender mechanism applied, the latter being at the elevated position. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the front or drop canvas and roller hereinafter referred to. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one end of the winding roller for the said canvas. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of one end of the car, the fender devices being at the swung-up or folded position in full lines, and at the down or tripped position in dotted lines. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of one of the spring connections for the rock shaft. Fig. 8 is a detail section that illustrates the buffer-frame manually-operated releasing devices.
In the practical adaptation of my present invention, I use two rock shafts 23 mount- Specification of Letters Patent.

ed in the side brackets 1, secured on the car front and having cylindrical casings 40, in which are mounted coiled springs 41 that cooperate with the shaft 2, and which normally tends to rock the said shaft outwardly, see arrow m, Fig. 7 At their opposite ends, the shafts 2 and 3 carry intermeshing gears 4 and 5, the shaft 2 also carrying at the said opposite ends outwardly, downwardly and rearwardly curved side arms 6, the purpose of which will presently appear.
13 designates swingable side arms fastened to the shaft 3 and to the gears 5, to swing in the vertical plane, and on the outer ends of the said arms 18 is ournaled a winding roller 14 to which is connected one end of a drop apron 15 from the lower end 16 of which hangers 17 are pendently supported, the said hangers being apertured to receive the journals 18 of a drag roller 18. The said journals 18" extend beyond the hangers 17, so that they may rise into and seat in recesses 20, formed in side extensions 19 on the front ends of the arms 13, such arrangement of parts aiding in prop erly supporting the drag roller when the fender is at the elevated or folded position shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
21 designates a flexible hanger that includes a ball-like head 21 secured to the lower front end of the apron 15 which has for its purpose to hold the drop apron 15 and the roller 18 to its vertical position when the fender is set to the position shown in Fig. 2.
12 designates a canvas apron that may be wound on a roller 10 mounted in brackets 11 pendent from the car frame, and having a journal extension for receiving a crank 10*.
29 designates ropes or chains for sustaining the side arms and their attached parts in their dropped position, and they are se cured at the upper ends to the car body and at their lower ends to the outer ends of the side arms 13.
The canvas apron 12 connects at its for ward end with a cross rod 7 that joins the lower ends of the arms 6.
8 designates a sheet steel catch platform hung at the rear end on the cross rod 7 and having its front edge turned down for readily sliding over rough surfaces. Flexible hangers 37 are secured to the platform 8 and include eye members .57 for engaging holding bolts hung from the side arms 6 and which are slidable in keepers 36 on the car body.
By reason of the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts as described and shown, when the roller 10 is wound to take up the apron 12the side arms 6 are swung backwardly and upwardly to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and in doing so the gears 4 on the arms 6 turn the gears in the direction indicated by the arrow 1 and thereby swing the arms 13 to the vertical position shown. After the arms 6 have been swung back as stated. the free ends of the hanger bolts 35 are inserted by hand through the keepers 3G and the eyes 37 on the members 37, which serves to hold the arms 6, and the platform 8 up under the car in position to be shot forwardly in the manner presently to be explained. After the arms 13 are swung to the vertical position, as stated, the flexible hanger 21 is slipped between the pincer-like clamping jaws 24, normally closed by the spring connection 34, that joins with the upwardly extending members 2 1 of the jaws, the latter being pivotally mounted on a bracket 24 on the top of the car.
22 designates a buffer-frame preferably formed of light metal tubing and the same includes side members 22 having bearing portions 23 that fixedly engage with the rock shaft 2, a bottom bar 26 having end pintles 26 (see Fig. 6) and a supplemental frame 25, pendent from the bottom bar 26 and hung on the pintles 26 and formed with crank portions 25* that project inwardly to the rear of and normally engage the side members 22*.
The object in pivotally suspending the lower or supplemental frame 25 is to allow it to lift up on coming in contact with the roadway when ascending a steep grade from a level crossing, it being apparent from the drawing that since the frame 22 is rockably mounted in striking an object the lower part will be swung backwardly and the upper end correspondingly outwardly, and at this point, it should be stated, that the outward swing of the upper end of the buffer frame is what effects the release of the side arms 13, the apron 15 and the roller 18 carried thereby, such release being effected in the followmg manner.
A counterbalanced frame, which includes a bottom cross rod 31 and upright rods 32, is slidable in bearings on the car dash, and on the roof beam above which the rods 32 project. Flexible connections 30 pass over pulleys 30 connect with the cross bar 31 of the counterbalanced frame and join with transverse extensions 27 of a pusher rod 27 that extends through the car dash within convenient reach of the motorman. The rod 27 connects with the upper cross bar of the buffer frame 22 and it has a lug 29 for engaging with a detent 28 on the inside of the car dash, which detent is swung down when it is desired to hold the buffer frame locked against movement in its axial mounts.
Pulleys 33 are mounted on the car top over which pass cables 32 that join with the upper ends of the rods 32 and with the upper ends of the arms 24 of the pincer jaws 24L.
Assmning the parts to be in the elevated or folded position, and it is desired to manually operate the fender, the motorman pushes the rod 27 outwardly, which through the connections described lifts the counterbalanced or sliding frame, whose upwardly movable rods 2-31 now pull on the cables 32, and in consequence spread the pincer jaws 24, thereby releasing the hanger device 21, and the side arms 13, which being thus re leased drop to the horizontal position. By reason of their weight, the side arms and their gear connections with the shaft 2, assist the springs on the shaft 2 to rock the said shaft 2, and thereby cause the arms (3 to swing outwardly, it being understood that immediately as the said arms 6 swing outwardly, they pull the hooks 35 from the keepers 36 and thereby release the catcher platform 8, which is then shot forwardly over the roadway under the object to be caught. As the arms 13 drop down the apron 15 unwinds by gravity and falls in front of the said object, and serves to act as a safety guard for holding the object from being mangled or crushed, should the same roll forwardly, since the said apron, when engaged by the body, acts as a drag therefor The same operations of the parts are automatically effected should the object strike the buffer frame, since the top of the buffer frame will be thereby swung outwardly and pull on the cords that lift the counterbalanced frame.
lVhat I claim is:
1,. In a car fender of the character described, a catcher platform, swingable arms that support the platform, other swingable drop arms operatively connected with the platform supporting arms, means for operating the said last named arms, a detent carried by the said platform supporting arms, a releasable connection between the said detent and the said platform for holding the front of the said platform up, and means for holding the said drop arms in a vertical position to cause the said platform supporting arms to maintain the said platform in its retracted position.
2. In a car fender of the character de scribed, a catcher platform, swingable arms that support the platform, other swingable drop arms operatively connected with the platform supporting arms, means for operating the said last named arms, a detent car ried by the said platform supporting arms, a releasable connection between the said detent and the said platform for holding the front of the said platform up, means for holding the said drop arms in a vertical po sition to cause the said platform supporting arms to maintain the said platform in its retracted position, and a drop apron carried by the drop arms to fall in front of the said platform when the said arms are released.
3. In a car fender of the character de scribed, a catcher platform, ejector devices for the platform rockably mounted on the car frame, means normally tending to swing the said devices in a platform ejecting posi tion, swingably mounted drop arms operatively connected with the ejector devices, a detent connected with the ejector devices for holding the catcher platform raised, and re leasable as the ejector devices eject the platform, other detent devices for holding the drop arms to the raised position and means for releasing the said detent devices whereby to permit the ejector. devices moving outwardly.
4. In a car fender of the character described, a catcher platform, means for ejecting the said platform, said means including swingable side arms that connect with and support one end of the platform, a detent carried by the said side arms, a connection that joins the front end of the platform and the detent, the said detent being arranged to disengage the connection when the swingable arms are swung to eject the platform, means tending to continuously swing the said arms to eject the platform and other releasable means for restraining the said swingable arms when the platform is at the retrieved position.
In a car fender of the character described, a catcher platform, means for ejecting the said platform, said means including swingable side arms that connect with and support one end of the platform, a detent carried by the said side arms, a connection that joins the front end of the platform and the detent, the said detent being arranged to disengage the connection when the swingable arms are swung to eject the platform, means tending to continuously swing the said arms to eject the platform and other releasable means for restraining the said swingable arms when the platform is at the retrieved position, the said means including opposing clamping jaws and a keeper, and means operable from the car platform for releasing the said clamping jaws.
6. In a car fender of the character described, the following elements in combination: swingable supporting arms, a catcher platform supported by the said arms, means tending to continuously swing the said arms outwardly whereby to eject the catcher plat form, other swingable drop arms, the said drop and supporting arms having intermeshing gears so arranged that as the drop arms are swung up the supporting arms will be swung backwardly to move the catcher platform to retracted position, a detent for holding the drop arms to their elevated position, and means operable from the car dash for releasing the said detent.
7. In a car fender of the character stated, the following elements in combination: a catcher platform, swingable ejector arms that support the inner end of the platform, means tending to normally swing the ejector outwardly, restraining devices for holding the said ejector arms to their innermost position, said devices including a releasable detent, ahanger for the front end of the platform, and a detent that supports the hanger, the said detent being connected with the ejector arms and releasable to drop the said hanger when the said arms are swung outwardly.
8. In a car fender of the character stated, the following elements in combination: a catcher platform, swingable ejector arms that support the inner end of the platform, means tending to normally swing the ejector outwardly, restraining devices for holding the said ejector arms to their innermost position, said devices including a releasable detent, a hanger for the front end of the platform, and a detent that supports the flexible hanger, the said detent being connected with-the ejector arms, and releasable to drop the said hanger when the said arms are swung outwardly.
9. In a car fender of the character stated, the following elements in combination: a catcher platform, swingable ejector arms that support the inner end of the platform, means tending to normally swing the ejector outwardly. restraining devices for holding the said ejector arms to their innermost position, said devices including a releasable detent, a flexible hanger for the front end of the platform, and a detent that supports the flexible hanger, the said detent being connected with the ejector arms and releasable to drop the said hanger when. the said arms are swung outwardly, a dropable apron connected to the inner endof the platform and a winding roller with which the apron is connected.
10. In a car fender of the character described, a catcher platform, means for ejecting the said platform, said means including pivoted arms, means tending to normally swing the said. arms outwardly to eject the platform, other means for holding the said pivoted ejecting arms under restraint, said other means including s\vingab1e drop arms, means operable from the cur dash for releasstroller mounted 1n the outer ends of the sald mg the smd detent.
