To all cli/0m it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM G. LAMB and ORANGE S. LAMB, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Resilient Brake-Hangers, of which the following is a speciiication.
Our invention relates to improvements in resilient brake-hangers, and the object of our improvement is to furnish means for supporting a spring-hanger and maintaining it and the brake-head in a desired relation to prevent slackness and keep the parts in a suitable position adjacent to the wheel to be acted on. This object we have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

The numeral 21 denotes a brake-shoe located in operative juxtaposition to the tread of the car-wheel 22, and having perforated lugs on its rear face adapted to register with projections on the forward face of the brake-block 15, a removable pin 16 serving to secure said parts together detachably. rIhe rear part of said brake-block is formed with two recesses on upper and lower sides of a projection 29. Brake- bars 18 and 19 are secured in said recesses tol said projection 29 by means of a screw, and short ribs 30 on said bars are seated in grooves in said projection to secure them from rocking. A brake rod 17 is secured between the bars 18 and 19 by means of a bolt 27 and a nut 26.
The numeral 1 denotes a brake-hanger formed of a flat plate of spring-steel or other resilient material and having on theV same face of each end a flanged-over lug 2 and 3 respectively. The lowermost lug 2 lits in a corresponding groove in the back of said brake-block to form a tongue-joint, and the lower end of said hanger has a bolt-hole 5 through which a screw 1A is passed to secure it to said block. The lug 3 on the upper end of said hanger is litted into a corresponding groove .in a casting 7 to form another tongue-joint, and an orifice 41- permits entrance of a bolt 30, which, withthe nut 6, serves to secure saidl hanger to said castingr A clamping plate 8 on the rear face of said hanger 1 is also secured by said last-inentioned bolt t0 hold the upper part of the hanger tightly in place. The downwardlyprojecting part 9 of said 'casting is somewhat diminished in thickness adjacent to said hanger, and has an interiorly-threaded orifice whichreceives anadjusting-screw 10 having a lock-nut 11 thereon, the end of the screw bearing against the said hanger-plate and adapted to be turned to bring the plate 1 under tension to a desired degree. Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the part 9 of said castingv has a projection tothe left provided with a channeled part 25 which is adapted to fit removably over the 'channeled support 12, and be secured thereto byV means of bolts 23 and the nuts 24.
rlhe hanger-plate 1 is held above to the casting 7 and below lto the brake-block 15 rigidly by reason of its lugs 3 and 2 being seated in the corresponding grooves in said parts. This prevents slackness in the connections and consequent rattling, and preserves the screw 14 and bolt 30 from working loose, or working about in such a manner as ,to widen their seats in the connected bodies. The hanger-plate 1 may be put under a tension by means of the adjustingscrew 10 to keep the block land shoe 21 at the right distance Vfrom the wheel-tread. The hanger-plate 1 then resiliently bears with said shoe in use against the tread with good contactat all times.
Having described our invention, what we claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination, a supporting-body, a spring-hanger, and a brake-head, said hanger being secured to said supporting-body and to said brake-head and means for placing said hanger under tension.
2. In combination, a supporting-body,'a spring-hanger', a brake-head, said hanger being secured to said supporting-body and to said brake-head by independent tonguejoints, and means for placing said springhanger under tension.
8. In combination, a supporting-body, a spring-hanger, a brake-head, said hanger being Vsecure-d to lsaid supporting-body andbrake-head by, independent tongue-joints, and adjustable means for placing said spring-hanger under tension, variably.
4l. In combination, a brake-block, a brakeshoe removably attached thereto, a flat spring-hanger, means for detachably securing said brake-block to one end of said hanger, means for placing said springhanger underl tension, and means for securing the other end of sa id hanger detachably to a supporting-body.
' 5. In combination, a brake-block, a brake shoe removably attached thereto, a i'lat springehanger, means for detachably securing said `brake-block toene end of said hanger, adjustable means for placing said spring-hanger under a desired amount of tension, andv means for securing the other end of said hanger detachablT to a supporting-body.
G. In combination, a brake-block, a` brakeshoe removably attached thereon, a iat spring-hanger having a transverse lug on each end or" one face thereof, said brakeblock having a transverse groove on its rear face adapted to seat one of said lugs, a bracket adapted to be mounted on a supporting-body, said bracket having on its rear face a transverse groove adapted to seat the other one of said lugs, means for attaching said spring-hanger detachably to the rear faces oi said bracket and of said brake-block with its lugs secured in said grooves, and means adapted to place said spring-hanger under tension.
7. In combination, a brake-block, a brakeshoe removably attached thereto, a ilat spring-hanger having a transverse lug on each end of one face thereof, said brakeblock having a transverse groove in its rear face adapted to seat one of said lugs, a bracket adapted to be detachably mounted on a supporting body, said bracket having on its rear face a transverse groove adapted to seat the other one oi' said lugs, means for detachably attaching said springdianger to the rear faces of said bracket and of said brake-block with its said lugs engaged in said transverse grooves, the lower part et said bracket being spaced from said springhanger and an adjusting-screw seated movably in the spaced part of said hanger with its end bearing adjustably against the hanger to exercise a desired tension thereupon.
