Description

L. B. HUNT. RAILWAY GAR WHEEL.
No. 109,320. Patented Nov. 15, 1870.

LEWIIS'B. HuNrfo'r NEW YORK, n. Y.
Letters Patent No. 109,320, dated November 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT m RAILWAY-CAR WHEELS.
The Schedule referred to in, these Letters Patent and making part oi the same.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, Lewis B. H NT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gar- Wheel"; and I do heresorted in a suitable manner, so as to engage with and -be secured to the axle, and a metallic tire is secured by declare the following to bea clear and exact description thereof, sufiicient to enable others skilled inthe the art to which my invention 'appertains to use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to the construction of a carwheel. I
It consists lll. making and constructing such a car wheel of thin disks, layers, or veneers of wood, or its equivalent, placed together in such a manner that the grain in such disks or veneers of wood shall be in different directions that is, that such layers or veneers shall be arranged and placed together in such a manner that the grain in such shall not be parallel with each other.
In the accompanying drawing the figure, which isa central transverse section, illustrates the feature of my invention.
. The letters H H are thin sheets of wood or veneers placed laterally and glued, cemented, or otherwise secured firmly together. These layers are placed and secured together in such a manner that the'grains oniposing the same are in different directions or not parallel with each other.
At the center of the body of the wheel a hub is into the periphery in any well-known manner.
In thus constructing a car-wheel, elasticity, lightness, and strength are combined.
I do not limit myself to any particular form of a carwheel, since any form of wheel can be constructed with my improvements.
Having thus described my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A car-wheel, the body of which is composed of a series 'ofthin disksor veneers of wood laid together with the grains crossings each other, cemented, glued,
or otherwise secured together, in combination with a metallic rim and a hub, substantially as set forth.
