FUSIBLE DEVICE.
specifieatin of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. fel, i914.
Application filed March 28, 1912. Serial No. 686,790.
certain new and useful Improvements .in Fusible Devices; and I do -hereby declare the following specification, t-ken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming apart of the same, to be a full, clear,
and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to a fusible device adapted to be employed in connection with automatic fire extinguishing' apparatus; as`
for example to hold open fire-doors or shutters-or in other relations where a fusible link is employed.
The object of the invention is to strengthen the fusible solder-joint between the members of the device without diminishing the sensitiveness of the device to heat and at the same time to facilitate the free flow of the solder over all of the opposing surfaces. y
y'lio that end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination'of parts hereinafter described and claimed and more particularly set forth in the claims. y
In describing the invention reference will be made to the accompanying drawings,` inwhich-d Figure 1 is a 'top plan view of a fusible device embodying the invention in its preferred form. Fig. 2 is an edge View. Fig.
3 is a transverse sectional view on line ase-4U,
., edge view of the same.
Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of oneof the members of the fusible device. Fig. 5 isvan Fig. 6 is a plan view` of the other'member. Fig. 7 is an edge View of the same. Figs. 8, 9, an'd l0' are plan views of modified forms. Fig'. 11 is a longitudinal sectional view on line rf-i, Fig. l0.
Referring to the drawings, the fusible device consists of two members l and 2 adapted tobe secured together by fusible solder. The member 1` is `a double or two-partmember and the member 2 is a single or one-part member which is constructed and adapted to be inserted between the two-part member and soldered thereto.'
i The single memberQ is likewise provided with a. similar eyelet 4. The portions of both members Jl and 2 which arevarranged and adapted to engage each other are provided with. a series of transverse holes or perforations 5 which register with each other. These holes 5 furnish egress for the air when the parts are squeezed together in the soldering operation, thereby insuring a free flow ofthe solder over all of the opposing y surfaces and the solder flows into said holes and is formed into a series of interlocking transverse tongues or projections which serve to increase the strength of the' link against tensile strain.l y
Both legs of the two part member l are lpreferably provided upon oneside with a series of indentations 6 which produce af series of protuberances 7 upon the opposite Vside, as shownjin Fig. 5. The one-part member 2 is also `provided on one side with a series of similar indentations 8 which pro# duce a series of protuberances 9 upon the4 oppositeside, as shown in Fig. '7. These indentations and protuberanccs are so arranged and located that when the two members l and 2' of the link are assembled. to-' gether the series of pro-tuberances) upon one side of the one-part member 2 will enter the series of indentations 6 in one leg of the two-part member l, while the series of ilidentations 8 in the opposite side of said onepart member 2 will be engaged by the series ofv prot-uberances 7 upon the other leg. of said two-part member l, as shown in Fig. 3. rlhese indentations and resulting protuberances provide interlocking means `between the two members l and 2 formed from the metal of the members themselves andl thus serve to stillfurther increase the strength of the link against tensile strain. It is pre,-
ferred to form the indentat-ions and result ing protuberances conico-hemispherical in tuberances and also a. series of holes 5, said v holes being formed both in the protuberances'and bet'ween them, but if desired the holes G may be formed only in said protuberances, as shown in Fig. 8, or only between said protuberances as shown in Fig. l0.
Figs. 10 and 11 show a modified construction in which each of the two legs of the two-part member 1 is provided with an indentation 6 on its inner side, while t-he onepart member is provided with two indentations 8 one on each side thereof, thereby producing protuberances 9 upon opposite sides which protuberances 9 are so arranged and located that when the two members 1 and 2 of thelink are assembled together,
vone of the prot-uberances 5) on the oneeleg member 2 will enter the indentation (5 in one of the legs of the two-part member l,
while the other protuberance J will enter with an annular protuberance in one sideV arranged to register with the indentation Ain the leg of said two-part member.
2. An article of t-he character described comprising a'twopart member having two legs and provided with a conicohemispher ical indentation in one side and a conieohemispherical protuberance in the opposite side of each leg, and a one-part member adapted to be inserted'bctween the legs of said two-part member and provided with a protuberanee on one side arranged to enter the indentation in one leg of said two part member and provided with anv indentation on the opposite side arranged to be engaged by the protuberance upon the other leg of said two-part member.
8. An article of the character described comprising a two-partmember having two legs and provided with a series of conicohemispherical indentations in one side and a series of conico-hemispherical protuber- :mees in the opposite side of each leg, and
a one-parl'J member adapted to be inserted between the legs of said twopart member and provided with a series of protuberances on one side arranged to enter the indenta- 4. An article of the character described comprising a two-part member having two legs and providedvwit-ha series of indentations and a series of protuberances in each leg and a series of holes arranged both 1n ,and between said protuberanees, and a onepart member adapted to be inserted between the legs of said two part member land provided with a series of protuberances arranged t-o enter the indentations in one leg of said two-part member, a series of finden-- tations arranged to be engaged by the protuberances upon the other leg of said twopart member and a series of holes in and between said pro Y oerances arranged to register wit-h the holes in both legs of said twopart member.
5. An article of the character described 'comprising a two-part member having two legs and provided with an eyelet extending through both legs of said two-part member and an annular indentation in one of said legs having a cam-surface, and a one-part member adapted to be inserted between the legs of said two-part member provided with anannular protuberance having a cam surface arranged and adapted to engage the cam surface on the indentation in said twol
