The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the a'a'me.

We, ADoLPHUs BROWN and FELIX BROWN, of the city,4 county, and State-of'` New York, haveinvented certain vImprovements in Machines for Cutting Loaf- Sugar, of which the followiugis a specification.

Nature and Objec t.

rlhis invention'consists in adding a device to the improvements specified in the Letters Patent granted.

" "Figure 1 is a' view, partly in` section, shbwing the elastic element inserted between the cutters.

Figure 2 is an. end view of said cutting-cylinders.

' Figure 3 is a plan ofthe same, showing some of the spaces between the cutters, partially fitted with the recoil springs.

'lhese elastic blocks may be introduced in various vways, but the one shown in the drawing is perfectly practical, and consists in forming the blocks of rubber,

as at A, gs. 1 and 2, in squares nearly as large as the spaces between the cutters, leaving only sufficient space for the compression of the rubber in said spaces or between the cutters, as seen at B B, fig. `l. l

For the purpose of holding said blocks in position in said spaces, theyrnaybe formed, as shown at fig. 1, with holes .in their centers, into and through which a holding-screw may be driven into tbecylinderthat holds the knives or cutters, as plainly seen at C C, gs. 1. Said blocks may alsol be formed with a small shank or pin of the rubber itself, and forced into holes similar .to those in which the screws here shown are inserted.

p \Vhen said cylinders are provided with somefsuch substance in said spaces, the small cubes ofsugar that sometimes have a tendency to stick between the cutters are quickly removed, and the clogging'of the inachine thereby prevented; and such a device also assists greatlyin keeping the cutters clean, so that much less pulverization of the sugar is produced.

What we claim, therefore, is

Blocks of some elastic substance, as rubber,inserted hetween\tl1e cutters of sugar-cutting cylinders, as described, audfer-the purposes set forth.
