SPITTOON-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK SooHURnK, J1'., and JOSEPH SooHUREK, both citizens of the United States and residents of West Allis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin, and of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisc0nsin, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spittoon- Holders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Our invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its main object being to provide the floors of railway passenger-cars with stationary stands combined with spring-controlled slidable carriers for removable spittoons, the carriers with the spittoons thereon being normally latched out of the way against spring-resistance under seats of the cars. However, spittoon holders in accordance with our invention may be variously placed.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a side elevation partly in section of a spittoonholder in accordance with our invention, and detachable spittoons therewith, the section being indicated by line 1-1 in the next described illustration; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same partly in transverse section, the section being indicated by line 2-2 in Fig. 1, and Fig, 3, a plan view of a detail of the holder partly in horizontal section.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, 4 indicates a stand intended to be fastened by screws or otherwise to the floor of a railway passenger-car under a seat of the same, and the design of the stand may be varied indefinitely. Extending in opposite directions from the stand we show a pair of upper tubular arms 5, but one of these arms and parts in conjunction with the same may be omitted without departure from what is herein claimed.

Each arm 5 is provided with a longitudinal slot 6 engaged by a depending central fin 7 of a horizontal guide-plate 8, and said fin is in rigid connection with a tubular slide 9 engaging said arm. For a portion of its length, the fin is longitudinally notched to be clear of the slide and a sto in the outward path of said fin, this stop eing shown as a split-ring 10 arranged between a pair of collars 11 rigid with the adjacent arm. The ends of the ring are laterally offset and fastened together by a bolt and nut or in some other suitable manner.

The outer end of the slide 9 is closed by a plate 12 suitably secured thereto and provided upon its inner side with a beveled lug 13 by which a spring-latch 14L, fastened to the adjacent guide-arm 5, is automatically adjusted to engage said plate when said slide is forced back in said arm against the resistance of a spiral-spring 15 that is suitably stopped at its inner end, the stop in the present showing being a partition 16 in a single tube centrally secured to the stand 4: to provide'the aforesaid arms.

The guide-plate 8 is upturned at its inner end to provide a stop 17 for a slide 18 that engages said plate and is fastened upon the underside of the bottom of a spittoon 19. Another stop 20 is shown in hinge-connection with the plate 12 to be swung over in front of the spittoon when the same is in connection with the herein described holder.

The spittoon in connection with the slide 9 may be normally out of the way under a car-seat in front of a passenger occupying another adjacent seat, and being needed, the

latch lt is released by a foot of said paswith the holder, it may be readily removed for cleaning regardless of the position of its springcontrolled carrier, and a twin-holder similar to that herein shown is intended for location under a car-seat having a reversible back.

Spittoon-holders in accordance with our invention may be arranged under seats in halls, hotel lobbies and elsewhere particularly in places of public resort.

e claim:

1. The combination of a stand for stationary connection with a floor, a guide-arm eX- tending from the stand, a spittoon-carrier in sliding engagement with the arm, a spring arranged to resist retraction of the carrier, and a latch in connection with said arm for engagement with said carrier to hold the same in ret "acted position against expansive force of the spring.

2. The combination of a stand for stationary connection with a floor, guide-arms eX- tending in opposite directions from the stand, a spittoon-carrier in sliding engagement with each arm, springs arranged to resist retraction of the carriers, and latches in connection with the arms for engagement with the said carriers to hold the same in retracted position against expansive force of the springs.

The combination of a stand for stationary connection with a floor, a guide-arm eX- tending from the stand, a spring-latch in connection with the arm, a spittoon-carrier in spring-controlled sliding engagement with said arm, and a plate attached to the outer end of the carrier for automatic engagement of the latch when said carrier is in retracted position against spring-resist ance.

The combination of a stand for stationary connection with a floor, a longitudinally slotted tubular guide-arm extending from the stand, a tubular slide engaging the arm, a spiral-spring in contractile and expansible engagement with said arm and slide, a horizontal plate having a notched vertical fin in connection with the slide and having limited play engagement with the arm-slot, the plate being for the support of a removable spittoon; and a latch in connection with 5. The combination of a stand, a longitudinally slotted tube in connection with the stand to form guide-arms extending in opposite directions therefrom, a spring-controlled spittoon-ca'rrier in spring-controlled limited play engagement with each arm and a slot therein, and latches in connection with the arms for engagement with said carriers to hold the same in retracted position against spring-resistance.

6. The combination of a stand for stationary connection with a floor, a guide-arm extending from the stand, a carrier in spring-controlled sliding engagement with the arm, means for latching the carrier in retracted position against spring-resistance, a spittoon having a slide attachment engaging said carrier against a stop therewith, and a swing-stop in connection with the aforesaid carrier forward of the spittoon.
