A. C. SMITH.
CABLE CLAMP.

CABLE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 7, 1914.
Application led April?, 1913. Serial No. 759,487.
To all whom it may Concern.'
Be it known that I, AB C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and residing at lVarren, in the county of Bradley and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable-Clamps, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates toimprovements in cable `clamps.
An object of the device is to provide a means for securely clamping a cable therein and one in which the clamp which. is simple and inexpensive to manufacture may be readily applied to and detached from the cable in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a' clamp which by an inversion of an element thereof and its disengagement thereby from its other element may be changed in the size of its receiving socket and so as to accommodate and clamp ditler' 'ent diameters of cables.
With vthese general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims. i
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure l is a side elevation of the clamp positioned upon a cable, the latter shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof taken upon line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views respectively of the upper and lower clamp members.
Referring more in detail to the dra-wings, the main or what may be termed base member 10 of the clamp is provided with a complemental top or what may be termed cover member 11 removably lhinged thereto and adjustably retained and locked thereon by bolt members 12.
Atene end of the base member` projecting posts 13v are provided with' open end sockets 14 and have Vtheir inner top faces curved as at 15. The opposite end of said face member is provided with a threaded bore 16 upon each side thereof which bores are within side projections 17 betweenwhich and the posts 13 which also project laterally are the intermediate rooved sides or sockets 18. Said threaded ores 16 are extended through hollow integral posts 19 upon said base member, the latter extending to faheight intermediate that of the post 13 While said continuous bores may be internally screw-threaded their entire or a portion of their length. The cover member 11 adjacent one end is provided with laterally-extending lugs 20 having their inner faces thereof curved and adapted to seat within the sockets 14 of the base 'member and thereby to hinge the cover 11 thereto, it being evident that a movement of the cover relative to the base member allows the shoulder 21 of said cover to move upwardly substantially adja- Cent to said curved surface 15 and also effecting a disengagement of the lugs 20 from the sockets 14 to effect a separation of the base and cover members. Forwardly of said cover l1 the same is provided with slightly oblong-shaped openings 22 having smooth interiors and adapted to receive the tubular posts 19 and to fit thereover upon a closing of the members together, the same being in hinged relation above noted. Itis apparent that a cable member 23 when placed wit-hin the semi-circular socket 24 of the base member will also be received within the corresponding socket 25 of the cover member and that upon a tightening of the bolts 12, the cable will thus lbe firmly clamped between said members and within the clamp, the manipulation of the bolts being effected through the squared heads 2G thereof provided with wrench-hold surfaces and leverreceiving openings 27 if desired which heads contact the upper surface of the cover member to draw the same closely upon the cable by screwing home the bolts 12. y
f, The opposite faces of the cover member 11 are provided with sockets of different radii, the top-socket 28 as illustrated herein being of a less radius than that of said socket 25. rPhis provision is for the purpose of accommodating diderent sized cables within the clamp. the cover having the two sized sockets, and the base having a single socket. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the positioning of the cover member 11 upon the base member 10 with ,the socket 25 lowermost, brings the socket 25 of the cover above the socket 24 of the base so that said sockets cooperate to provide a bore of the greatest diameter of which thev device is capable. Longitudinal marginal shoulders 29 are procooperating sockets adapted to vided at opposite sides and at the top of the base socket 24 and upon said shoulders is adapted to rest the projecting portion 31 of the cover, which contains the socket 28 when the cover is positioned in its inverted position from that shown in Figs. 1 and2. The present illustrated position in Fig. 2 accommodates the cable of greatest diameter While the position of the same With the cover inverted Will hold a cable of a less diameter. It is obvious that many uses may be made for the present cable clamp which is adaptable not only to use in connection with well drilling operations as Well as any other many cases Where it is desirable to forcibly hold or draw cable or similar member.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what vare believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may"Y be made'in form, proportion,. and details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth inthe appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention and in what manner the same is designed for use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is :mA
1. A cable clamp comprising a base -member, side socketed posts projecting from one end thereof, a cover member, lugs upon one end of said cover member land adapted to engage the sockets of said posts, hollow posts mounted upon the opposite end of said base member and in alinement with threaded bores through said base member, adjustablei locking means positioned Within saidbores, and said body and cover members having engage a cable.
2. A cable clamp comprising a base member, side socketed posts projecting from one end thereof, a cover member, lugs upon one end of said cover member and adapted to engage the sockets of said posts, hollow posts mounted upon the oppositeend of said base member and in alinement with threaded bores through said base member, adjustable locking means positioned Within said bores, said base member provided With a longitudinal groove in the top thereof, said cover member ,provided with opposite longitudinal grooves of diferent diameters centrally positioned therein, said cover member adapted to be positioned with either of its faces 'adjacent the base member for bringing either of the grooves of said cover incogperative relation with the groove of said ase. 4 f V3. A cable clamp comprising a base member, a cover removably hinged thereto, locking means for said base and cover, said base member provided with a central longitudinal socket in one face thereof, longitudinal marginal shoulders at opposite sides-of the top of said socket, one face of said cover Vprovided `with an extension adapted to be received upon said marginal shoulders and having a longitudinal socket therein ofthe same diameter as said base socket' and the opposite side of said cover provided with a longitudinal socket of a diameter greater than that of the other sockets.
In testimony whereof I `aiix my signature H. E. BOND, B. L. BEASLEY.
