To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD G. SrrILEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed-Regulators for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
In the operation of explosive engines of the gasolene or similar type, speed regula tion by means of a throttle governor varying the volume of the charge is advisable under certain conditions, for example, when steady power is desired, while under other conditions a hit and miss or charge omitting by exhaust valve regulating is desirable, or is considered more economical.
The present invention provides governor control means for operating or effecting either throttle regulation or hit and miss regulation, the same centrifugal governor being employed for each purpose, with a manually operated device for throwing either governor into action.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of an engine provided with the improvement. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Fig. 8 is a detail in section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The main engine parts may be of any ordinary construction, including, in the type of engine illustrated, the cylinder 6, crank shaft 7 geared to a way shaft 8 which is geared to the shaft of a centrifugal governor device 9, the balls of which operate to shift a sleeve 10 and lever 11, the latter being fulcrumed on a support 12 as indicated at 13, which also forms the fulcrum of a lever 14- and a lever 15, the former of which may be operated to control the hit and miss mechanism, and the latter of which may be operated to control the throttle valve.
The hit and miss mechanism comprises a rocker 16 connected by link 17 to the lever la and adapted to catch a collar 18 on the stem 19 of the exhaust valve located as usual in the valve casing 20. The exhaust valve is lifted by a cam 21 acting on a lever 22 connected to the valve stem in the usual manner, and when the valve stem is caught by the rocker 16 the exhaust valve is held open to avoid charge induction or compression.
The lever 15 has a fork 23 at its end engaging a pin 24 on a crank arm 25 attached to the stem 26 of a throttle valve of any suitable construction in the throttle valve casing 27.
At its end the lever 11 carries a turn button 30, the stem of which is provided with cams 31 and 32 which may be respectively engaged with the levers let and 15 according to whether the cam 81 or the cam 32 is turned up. When the cam 31 is turned up, as shown in the drawings, the lever 14 is operated, and the lever 15 remains inactive, under movement of the lever 11 by the centrifugal mechanism. Therefore, in such case, the hit and miss governor is operated and no regulation is eifected at the throttle. To throw the hit and miss device out of action and put the throttle governor into action, the turn button 30 is given a half turn to drop the cam 31 from the lever 14 and raise the cam 32 to the lever 15, whereby the latter is operated by movement of the lever 11 and the throttle valve is turned accordingly to regulate the charge admitted. By the means described therefore, either governing device may be used according to the wishes of the user of the engine or according to the nature of the work being done.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a speed regulator for internal combustion engines, the combination of a throttle valve regulator, an exhaust valve regulator, a centrifugal device operated by the engine, and means to selectively operate either of said regulators by said device.
2. In a speed regulator for internal combustion engines, the combination of a throttle valve regulator, an exhaust valve regulator, a centrifugal device operated by the engine, a lever operated by said device, means to selectively connect said lever to either of said regulators to operate the same.
3. In a speed regulator for internal combustion engines, the combination of a regulator, including a lever, for one of the engine valves, a centrifugal device operated by the engine, a lever operated by said centrifugal device, and a connector between the levers, said connector being manually operable to operatively connect or disconnect the levers.
4:. In a speed regulator for internal combustion engines, the combination of a lever connected to the throttle valve for regulating the same, a hit and miss mechanism including a lever for controlling the exhaust valve, a centrifugal device driven by the engine, a lever 11 actuated by said centrifugal device and working adjacent to the before-mentioned levers, and manually operated means to transmit the motion of said lever 11 to either of said other levers, and regulate either of said valves.
5. In a speed regulator for internal combustion engines, the combination of a lever connected to the throttle valve for regulating the same, a hit and miss mechanism including a lever for controlling the exhaust valve, a centrifugal device driven by the engine, a lever 11 actuated by said centrifugal device and working adjacent to the before-mentioned levers, and manually operated means to transmit the motion of said lever 11 to either of said other levers, and regulate either of said valves, said manually operated means comprising a turning pin 20 RICHARD GLS'HILEY,
