Description

J. R. NAGY. TIE AND RAIL PASTENEB.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.20,1913
1 ,@92,66 1 Patented. Apr. 7, 1914 WITNESSES NVENTOR Jaw/WW y, W V
ATTORNEY TIE ANT) RAILUFASTENER.
T 0 (4Z5 whom it may concern Be it Known that I, Jenn ft. NAGY, a
citizen of the -United States of America, re-
siding at Martins Ferry, in the county of Belmont and State of Uhic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ties and rail teners, and the primary object of my invention is to furnish metallic ties with positive and reliable means as hereinafter set forth, for connecting the rails thereto without resorting to the use of splice bars, nuts, bolts or screw spikes.
Another object of this invention is to provide a metallic tie upon which rails can be firmly supported and the ties tamped in a road bed similar to ordinary Wooden ties.
A further object of this invention is to provide simple, durable and inexpensive rail fasteners that can be easily and quickly installed without the use of skilled labor.
\Vith theabove and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing wherein Figure 1 is a plan of metallic ties and rail fasteners in accordance .with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation-of one-of theties, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the same, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the detached rail fastener.
A tie in accordance with this invention comprising a flat metallic slab 1 adapted to support the inner and purer base flanges and 3 of rails 4-. The slab l is provided with.
transverse inner rail fasteners 5 adapted to overhang the inner base flanges 2 of the rails The inner faces of the fasteners 5 are disposed at an angle as at .6, for the purpose that will presently appear.
The slab l is provided with transverse Specifieaticn of Letters Patent.

outer rail fasteners 7 for the outer base flanges i) of the rails a. The slab 1, adjacent to the buter fasteners 7 having transverse grooves 8, and the inner faces of the outer fasteners 7, are disposed at an angle the reverse of t is angle of the inner faces 6 of the inner fasteners 5.
The rails 4 are positioned with the ties at an angleas shown by dotted lines at the left hand side of Fig. 1. The ties can then be shifted at right angles to the rails whereby the inner and outer fasteners will extend over the inner and outer base flanges of said rails.
To lock the rails in engagement with the ties, keys 9 are associated with the outer rail fasteners. The keys 9 are driven in the grooves 8, and said keys have overhang-- ing auxiliary fasteners 10 for engaging the outer base flanges 3 of the rails 4-. With the keys 9 driven home, the rails are firmly locked in the inner and outer rail fasteners and cannot become vertically or longitudinally displaced relatively to said ties.
VVhat I claim is In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination With rails, of a metallic slab for supporting the inner and outer base flanges of said rails, transverse inner fasteners carried by said slab and having the inner faces thereof at an angle, transverse outer fasteners carried by said slab and having the inner faces thereof at an angle the reverse of the inner faces of said inner fasteners, said slab having grooves formed therein adjacent to said, outer fasteners keys driven in said grooves and auxiliary fasteners carried by said keys and cooperating with said inner and outer fasteners in overhanging the inner and outer flanges of said. rails to lock said rails upon said tie.
In testimony whereof I a'ihx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
