INTERM'ITTENT-GRIP DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. *7, 1914.
Original application filed July 11, 1912, Serial No. 708,776. Divided and this application filed December To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MARTIN BRUNET and JOIIAN MAonK, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of North Chicago, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, and of the city of Waukegan, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Intermittent-Grip Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in operating mechanisms especially adapted for use in connection with an advertising apparatus operated by means of clock mechanism, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and effective means for this purpose, the present application being a division of our priorapplication for signs, filed July 11th, 1912, Serial No. 708,776.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, a section taken on line yy of Fig. 2, Fig. 2, an enlarged side elevation of the mechanism, Fig. 3, a section taken on line 2-z of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4:, a detail view of a driving pinion employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings comprises a suitable frame or housing 1 in which is mounted an ordinary clock spring drum 2. This clock spring drum is provided with the usual winding shaft 3 extending from one side of frame 1 and carrying a winding gear 4 on its outer end. The winding gear 1 meshes with a winding pinion (not shown) fixed to a winding shaft 6, a housing 7 is secured to one side of frame 1 and incloses a portion of shaft 6. In its outer portion shaft 6 carries a pin 13 and an operating crank 14 is provided with an inclined notch 15 adapted to engage pin 13 to wind drum 2.
Drum 2 carries a driving gear 16 upon its periphery and meshing with a driving pinion 17 mounted upon a shaft 18 arranged in frame 1, as shown. Shaft 18 carries a driving gear 19 meshing with a driving pinion 20 carried by a shaft 21 also mounted in frame 1. Shaft 21 carries a driving gear 22 meshing with a driving pinion 23 carheld bell crank lever.
Serial No. 738,208.
ried by a driving shaft 24 mounted in frame 1, as indicated. At its inner end shaft 24 carries a crank arm 25 which in turn carries a crank pin 26 at its outer end. Crank pin 26 is connected by means of a link 27 with a pawl arm 28 which carries a spring held pawl 29 riding upon the periphery of a wheel 30 which is fixed to a driving shaft 31 mounted in frame 1. IVheel 30 is provided in its periphery with a plurality of equally spaced notches 32 adapted to receive pawl 29 and thus operatively connect pawl arm 28 with wheel 30 when said pawl arm is oscillated in one direction and to disengage said wheel when said pawl arm is oscillated in the other direction. A check pawl 33 is also arranged to ride upon the periph ery of wheel 30 and engage notches 32 to lock said wheel against movement. Pawl 33 is provided with a downwardly extending operating arm 34: which engages the bifur cated upper end of one arm 35 of a spring The other arm 36 of this spring held crank lever is provided at its outer end with a laterally projecting cam member 37 which is set in the path of pin 26 so as to be engaged by said pin just prior to the commencement of the operative movement of pawl arm 28. By this arrangement, it will be observed, that shaft 24 will be constantly driven by means of the clock spring drum 2 and crank arm 25 and crank pin 26 will serve to oscillate pawl arm 28, thus producing intermittent movement of shaft 31, crank pin 26 automatically releasing check pawl 33 to permit of such movement, as explained above.
Shaft 31 carries a coupling member 38 adapted to engage a spindle 39, whereby said shaft 31 may be operatively connected with any suitable or desirable apparatus, such, as for example, the sign construction set forth in our original application re ferred to above. As a precautionary measure, pinion 17 is provided with a hub 40 having inclined notches 41 therein and adapted to engage pins 41-2 projecting diametrically from shaft 18. By this arrangement, in case the spring in drum 2 should break, thus causing reversal of the normal rotation of shaft 18, pin 12 will automatically disengage from notches 41 and thus disconnect the spring from the rest of the mechanism and prevent reversal of the operating part of the mechanism in case of such an accident. Shaft 24 carries a driving gear 43 meshing with a pinion 44 on a shaft 45, which in turn carries a driving gear 46 meshing with a pinion 47 on a shaft 48. Shaft 48 carries a worm wheel 49 meshing with a worm 50 on a governor shaft 51. Governor shaft 51 carries a centrifugal governor 52 which is arranged to control the speed of rotation of shaft 51 and consequently the speed of operation of the entire mechanism.
The operating mechanism above set forth will be found to be simple of construction and highly efficient in use.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction 1 for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of our invention. We, therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with an operating shaft of a notched wheel operatively con-' nected therewith; a pawl arranged to ride upon the periphery of said wheel and engage said notches; a shaft; means for rotating said shaft; a crank pin carried by shaft of a notched wheel operatively con-.
nected therewith; a pawl arranged to ride upon the periphery of said wheel and engage said notches; a shaft; mechanism for rotating said shaft; a crank pin carried by said shaft; a link connected with said pin and pawl to oscillate the latter; a check pawl arranged to engage said notches to lock said wheel against movement; a spring held bell crank arranged to operate said pawl to release the same to permit movement of said wheel; and a cam on one arm of said bell crank and arranged to be engaged by said pinto operate the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
