Description

tith Sttte do hereby declare that the following is a llll,'clear, and
anni @ffice WIL'LrAM M. HEATH, or wATAeA.,rLLrNo1 s.
Letters Patent No.'109,207, dated November 15, 1870. I
IMPROVEMENT IN CiRPIFnfiRELLISES.
The Schedule xfefen'd =to in these Letters Patent and making part of the saine.
To all ichom it may concern:
l Beit known that I, WILLIAM M. HEATH, Vof Walaga, 1n the county of'Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Trellis; and I exact descriptionl of the same, reference heilig bad to the accompanying drawing making a portion ot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of :ny-invention.
Similar letters .of reference indicate corresponding' parts in all of the figures. l
The object-of this invention is to provide a cheap andsimple trellis for grape-vines, which may be easily turned downv in the fall for the purposeot' covering the vines without detaching the vines from the trellis.l
The invention consists in setting main posts, to which others, carrying 'the wires, are pivoted, so they may be turned down with the wires when-desired, the stationary posts containing notches or recesses into which the wires tit, and in which they rest'and are supported while the frame is erect.
'lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawing.A
A A A represent posts, set firmly in the ground. O l@ represent posts, pivoted at D D to the posts A A.
usual way, at their ends, to the posts'O G.
B B represent braces for the posts A A.
EE E represent wires, which vare attached in the y While the posts C C are in an upright position the wires E E E rest in lateral grooves, a a w a a, in the posts A A A' and braces B B.
G G are pins or bolts, inserted through col'respouding holes in the posts A C, for the purpose of holding the posts U C in a vertical position.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
Ihe posts A A being set at any desired distance apart, posts A may be arrangedbetween them in sufcient numbers to hold the weight and strain on the wires E while up, and in this position `the vines may trailed or attached to. the wires E E.
In the fall, when it is desired to' cover the vines for winter protection, the' pins G G may bewithdrawn,
the wiresl E E removed from grooves a a a a, and" `the posts C C turned down to the position shown by the `dotted lines E E E' and G CV.
I am aware that trellises for grape-.vines have. been pivotcd to posts in the mannersubstantially as in my improved trellis, and I lay no claims to the pivots or joints so applied.
What I claim as of myinvention isv The slotted'or notched standard-posts AA' and braces B, arranged with the wire-carrying posts O, constructed and operating substantially as and forthe purpose specified.
WILLIAM-M. HEATH. Witnesses:
J. B. HARsH, P. R. RICHARDS.
