ill STTEd ATENT QFFKG OSCAR E. SPOTT, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
BUTTON-CLASP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Oscar E. Srorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Button-Clasps, of which the following is aspecification.
An object of the invention is to provide a button clasp, particularly adaptable for securing a button in the lapel of a coat.
The invention embodies, among other features, a clasp particularly used in connection with artistically designed buttons of fraternal orders, organizations and the like, and which is secured to the lapel of a coat by passing a portion of the button clasp through the button-hole of the lapel and securing the same in position so that the artistic front of the button will be prominently displayed, the said button clasp being adapted to act as a support or securing means for a watch chain or the like.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which -'1nilar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device showing the same applied to the lapel of a coat, the lapel being shown in vertical section; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the button clasp; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 38 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I provide a button 10, preferably of a concave shape, the outer face 11 of the button being preferably artistically designed or provided with a suitable configuration. Soldered or otherwise secured to the rear face 12 of the button 10 is a plate 13 having formed therewith and extending laterally rearward therefrom a bearing member 14 on which is mounted to swing a clamping member 15, the said clamping member being preferably triangular in shape and adapted to engage the free end of a pin 16 extended rearwardly from the upper end of the plate 13 and provided on the outer end thereof with a notch 17 in which the clamping member 15 is received, a suitable eye 18 being formed on the under side of the bearing member 14 to receive and sup- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 31, 1914.

is preferably made flat and elongated to properly extend through the usual Huttonhole 20 in a lapel 21, the pin 16 being passed through the cloth of the lapel, after which the clamping member 15 is swung upwardly to engage the pin 16, the upper portion of the clamping member being received in the notch 17, thus securing the button clasp to the lapel of the coat, the chain 19 being connected to the eye 18 to depend from the rear of the lapel so that the lower end of the chain can be received in the pocket of the coat that is usually formed adjacent the lefthand lapel of the coat.
By making the bearing member 14 of an elongated nature as mentioned heretofore the bearing member, when passed through the button-hole, will prevent the button from turning and together with the pin 16 will retain the button in upright position and it will be readily understood that when the device described has been attached to a coat as mentioned, the outer face 11 having an artistic configuration thereon will be prominently displayed, while the securing means of the but-ton will be invisible to the casual observer.
With a device of the kind described a button can be easily and quickly secured in position, and aside from being prevented from rotation relatively to the lapel of the coat, the particular construction of the member having the clamping member mounted thereon, will not distort or injure the button-hole of the lapel, this being the usual case with the ordinary swivel button that is now most generally used. It will be further noted that the various parts including the securing means of the button are permanently mounted upon the button proper, whereas in the swivel button a plurality of independent parts are employed and when one of the parts becomes lost it is impossible to properly mount the other part on the lapel of the coat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the class described comprising a button, means for preventing the loss of said button, said means including a plate of rectangular configuration, a bearing member projecting laterally from the rear face of the plate and transversely of said port a chain 19. The bearing member 14 button, a triangular-1y shaped clamping member having an equal number of sides and having one of said sides mounted in the bearing member for swinging movement, a pin carried by the plate and adapted to be engaged by the triangular member at the point of juncture of the other of said sides, and an eye formed integrally With the bearing member at its medial portion and port a chain.
