INVENTOR RICHARD C. KILHAM, OF DUQUESNE, PENNSYLVANIA.
VALVE FOR STEAM-CHESTS.
nearest.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 31, 191 1.
Application filed June 2, 1913. Serial No. 771,161.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD C. KILHAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Duquesne, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves for Steam-Chests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to valves for steam chests, and the primary object of my inven tion is to furnish a steam chest with a rotary valve for controlling the inlet and exhaustof steam to and from a cylinder.
Another object of this invention is to furnish a steam chest with a rotary regulating valve that can be easily adjusted to control the passage of steam to and from a cylinder.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive valve for steam chests that can be used in connection with various types of engines, and which eliminates the use of slide valves.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will nowbe had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a steam chest in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of the same, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the steam chest, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a cylinder adapted to be used in connection with the chest, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the steam chest, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of a regulating valve used in connec' tion with the same.
Further describing my invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes a cylinder and movable in said cylinder is a piston head 2 carried by a piston rod 3 that extends through a stuffing box 1, carried by one of the heads 5 of the cylinder. The side of the cylinder 1 has a longitudinal enlargement 6 provided with sets of ports 7 and 8 that are in communication with the ends of the cylinder. The outer ends of the ports 7 and 8 are positioned centrally of the enlargement 6 and arranged against said enlargement is an intermediate plate 9 having ports 10 and 11 registering with the ports 7 and 8. A gasket 12 is interposed between the enlargement (3 and the plate 9 and said plate has an annular recess 13 into a slot 1 1. The recess 13 accommodates a circular regulating valve 15 having segment shaped ports 16 adapted to register with the ports 10 and 11. The valve 15 has a handle or crank 17 that extends through the slot 141 to permit of the valve 15 being easily adjusted to regulate the passage between the ports 7 and 8 and 10 and 11.
Arranged against the plate 9 is a gasket 18 and against the gasket 18 there is an outer plate 19, said outer plate and said intermediate plate being held by screw bolts 20 or other fastening means. The outer plate 19 has longitudinal recesses 21 and 22, the former being in alinement with the ports 10 and 7 and the latter in alinement with. the ports 11 and 8. In communication with the recess 21 is a steam inlet pipe 23 and in communication with the recess 22 is a steam outlet or exhaust pipe 241.
The face of the plate 9 confronting the outer plate 19 is provided with a circular recess 25 for a rotary valve 26 having wings 27 controlling the communication between the recess 21 and the ports 10 and the recess 22 and the ports 11. The rotary valve 26 is mounted upon a stem 28 journaled in the outer plate 19 and a stufling box 29 carried thereby. Mounted upon the outer end of the stem 28 is a gear wheel 30 meshing with a small gear Wheel 31 mounted upon a revoluble shaft 32, carried by the outer plate 19. The shaft 32 has a crank 33 connected by a pitman 34 to the crank 35 of a main operating shaft 36.
In operation, the valve 26 is rotated through the medium of the elements 28 to 36 inclusive and the passage of steam through the ports 10 and 11 and 7 and 8 is controlled by said rotary valve, whereby steam will be admitted and exhausted from the cylinder 1 and impart a reciprocatory movement to the piston 2. The exact amount of steam admitted to and exhausted from the cylinder 1 can be easily regulated by the valve 15.
One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is I In a valve for steam chests, a cylinder having an enlargement provided With ports extending from the center of the enlargement to the end ofthecylinder, an intermediate plate positioned against said enlarges ment and provided With ports registering with the ports of the enlargement, said intermediate plate further provided With a circular recess and a slot opening at one side of the plate and into the recess, a circular regulating valve mounted in said recess and provided With segment-shaped ports registering With the ports of said plate for controlling the passage of steam therethrough, an outer plate positioned against said intermediate plate and provided with recesses,
said intermediate plate further provided With an additional circular recess, a rotary valve mounted in the last mentioned recess and provided With Wings for controlling communication between the recesses and the outer plate and the ports of the intermediate plate, a stern mounted in the outer plate and connected to said rotary valve, a handle con- Mrs. R.
