JOHN W. FURREY, OF VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON.
BUCKLE.
oanoaa.
Application filed. December 11, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN- W. FURREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vancouver, in the county of Clarke and State of l/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to buckles for use in connection with harness straps and other straps; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a harness provided with a buckle according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section, taken on the line 00-00 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of the buckle frame disengaged from the strap.
A spider ring or frame 2 of metal is provided, and 3 is a plate which extends across the center part of the ring. The ring is secured to a pad 4 of leather or other approved material, by means of loops 5. A hook 6 is arranged parallel to the plate 3 and a little to one side of the center of the ring, and a slot or elongated hole 7 is formed in the plate 3 crosswise of the hook and about inline with the free end of the hook. The hook is preferably formed integral with the crossplate.
A locking bar 8 is provided, and 9 is a pivot which projects laterally from one end portion of the locking bar and works in the slot 7. The pivot has a washer 10 and a rivet head 12 under the plate so as to hold the bar in engagement with the slot and permit its pivot to slide and turn therein. A stop member 14 projects from the looking bar on the other side of its pivot from the main portion of the locking bar, and 16 is a stop pin which projects from the plate 3 and which limits the movements of the locking bar.
A strap 17 is secured to the ring 2 on the opposite side of its center from the fasten ing loops, and the strap 17 is bent to form a loop 18 of any desired length. The free end portion of the strap is passed through the hook and between the locking bar and the plate, and is bent around the locking bar and passed backwardly through the hook.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 31, 1914.
Serial No. 805,930.
The tip 20 of the locking bar is arranged to bear against the curved end portion, of the hook, and the thickness of the locking bar is made a little less than the space between the hook and the plate. The pull or tension on the loop 18 draws the locking bar toward the hook so that the free end portion of the strap is gripped automatically and is pre vented from slipping. The slot in the plate permits the locking bar to move bodily toward the hook. When the strap is removed, the locking bar can be turned to the position shown in Fig. 3. The strap can be inserted at the open end of the hook, and the locking bar can be turned pivotally to engage with the strap, and the free end portion of the strap can then be slipped into engagement with the hook after the strap has been drawn to make a loop 18 of any desired length.
What I claim is:
1. In a buckle, the combination, with a frame provided with a crossplate and having a hook arranged substantially parallel to the crossplate, said crossplate having a slot arranged crosswise of the hook and adjacent to its free end, of a locking bar provided with a laterally projecting pivot which engages with the said slot, and a strap adapted to be looped around the locking bar and to be passed twice between the hook and the plate.
2. In a buckle, the combination, with a frame provided with a crossplate and having a hook arranged substantially parallel to the crossplate, said crossplate having a slot arranged crosswise of the hook and adjacent to its free end, of a locking bar provided with a laterally projecting pivot which engages with the said slot and having also a stop portion which projects on the other side of the pivot from its main portion, a
stop projecting from the said plate and adapted to engage with the stop portion and limit the movements of the locking bar, and a strap adapted to be looped around the locking bar and to be passed twice between the hook and the plate.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. FURREY.
Witnesses:
