"n earns JOHN BAPTISTE GOI-IMANN, OF NEW ALBANY, INDIANA.
STOVE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN B. GoHMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heatingstoves which are provided with a direct and an indirect course to the outlet-flue, and its object is to provide the stove with a novel and improved arrangement of flues, whereby the "indirect course of the smoke and other products of combustion is around the sides of the stove to the base thereof, and thence back to the top of the stove.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the stove; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, and Fig. 41 is a plan view.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes the fire-pot of the stove, at the bottom of which is the usual ash-pit 6 provided with a door 7. To the rear of the fire-pot, at the top thereof, is located a smoke-box 8 having an outlet 9, and below the ash-pit, at the front, is a smoke-box 10.
A smoke outlet-flue 11 extends from the fire-pot, at the top thereof, and opens into the smoke-box 8. The upper portion of the fire-pot is surrounded by a horizontal flue 12 leading from the flue 11, the ends of said horizontal flue being connected to the flue 11 on opposite sides thereof. Below the flue 12, the fire-pot is surrounded by a continuous horizontal flue 13 which is in communication with the flue 12, at the front of the stove, through a short vertical flue 14. Below the flue 13 is a third horizontal flue 15 which extends along the back and sides of the ash-pit 6, and has its ends connected to the smoke-box 10 to discharge thereinto. At the rear of the stove, a short vertical flue 16 connects the flues 13 and 15. From the smoke-box 10 a series of flues 17 lead to the smoke-box 8, said flues extending horizontally beneath the ash-pit 6 or bottom of the Specification of Letters Patent.

stove, and vertically and upward behind the stove. The flue 11 contains a damper 18 to shut off the smoke box 8 from said flue, or to establish a direct communication between said flue and the smoke-box. When the damper 18 is closed an indirect draft is had, the smoke and other products of combustion passing from the flue 11 to the flue 12, and from the latter, by the way of the connection 14;, into the flue 13, and thence, by the way of the connection 16, into the flue 15, and then into the smoke-box 10, from which lat ter the smoke and other products of combustion pass, by the way of the flues 17, into the smoke-box 8, from which they escape through the outlet 9. When the damper 18 is open, the smoke and other products of combustion pass directly from-the flue 11 into the smoke-box 8, and a direct draft is thus had.
By the arrangement of flues herein described a large heating surface is had, and a stove is produced which is simple in construction, and has a large heating capacity.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, but it is to be understood that various changes and modifications in the structural details may be made with out a departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A stove having direct and indirect draft-flues, the indirect draft-flues surrounding the stove in a horizontal series, top and bottom smoke-boxes, and flues connecting the smoke-boxes, said connecting flues extending horizontally beneath the stove and upward behind the same, the indirect draft-flues discharging into the bottom smoke-box, and the direct draft-flue discharging into the top smoke-box.
2. A stove having a fire-pot, a smoke outlet-flue leading from the top of the fire-pot, a top smoke-box having an outlet, into which smoke-box the aforesaid flue discharges, a bottom smoke-box, a series of flues extending horizontally around the fire-pot, the top flue of the series being connected to the aforesaid outlet-flue, and the bottom fine of the series being connected to the bottom In testimony whereof I afiix my signature smo%:e-h0x, a seaies of fines igonnecting the 'in presence of tWo Witnesses. slno :e-boxes, sai connecting ues extendin horizontally beneath the stove and upwar JOHN BAPTISTE GOHMANN' 5 behind the same, and a damper for shutting Witnesses:
off the first-mentioned series of fines from PEARL MOCOMB, the outlet-flue. ROBERT G. WULF.
