Be it known that I, GEORGE J. SAYEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sausage-Stutfers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this spccititaition.
My invention relates to sausage stutl'ers and kindred devices and has for its object the provision of an improved machine of this character.
My invention contemplates a machine of this character in which a movable piston may be used which is suitably actuated on one side by applied pressure, and which by its mo ement in answer to this pressure forces material out of the cylinder within which the piston operates.
My invention has several objects one of which primarily is to provide means whereby the cover of the cylinder, that is the cylinder head. may not be removed from the cylinder or tilted about its pivotal point on top of be cylinder until such time as the pre sure has been released from the applied pressure side of the piston.

My invention further contemplates improved packing means between the piston and cylinder, which packing means are re sponsive to the pressure upon the applied pressure side of the piston. ]n this way there is a tight 'oint provided between the piston and cylinder when the piston is under pressure and the pressure between the cylinder and piston is released when the pressure upon the applied pressure side of the piston is released. thus to permit the piston to fall readily by the action of gravity when the applied pressure is withdrawn.

Referring more specifically to Figs. 1, 2 and 3. I have a cylinder 1 into which a pipe 2 leads in the bottom thereof for the purpose of simplying pressure to the interior of the cylinder to thereby actuate a. piston 3 which is shown more W plate 4 is pivoted on the shaft 5 and carries at its top two outlets 6 and 7 which lead from the interior of the cylinder to the exterior thereof and are adapted foruse for sausage stutling or similar purposes as is well understood.
My invention concerns itself with suitable locking means for locking this cover 4- in place and preventing the destruction of the machine should pressure he applied when this cover plate is open and likewise to prevent destruction of the machine which would be likely to occur should an attempt be made to open this cover while the pressure is still acting against the applied pressure side of the piston. A three-way valve 8 controlled by a handle 9 controls the flow of pressure fluid from the pipe 10 through the pipe 2 to within the cylinder. This valve 8 may have any of the ordinary constructions in such a way that depending upon the position of the handle 9 pressure may be supplied to within the cylinder, or the supply may be cut off by closing the openinp of the pipe 10 within the valve 8 and opening the pipe 2 to the atmosphere as may be desired to thereby release the pressure from within the cylinder and permit the piston to fall by gravity to be in position to take a fresh charge. A hinged cover plate has a locking device consisting of the two toggle elements It and 12, the element 11 consisting: preferably of the two parts as shown which are pivoted at; one extremity to the cover by means of the pin 13 and which are pivoted to the element 12 at the opposite extremity by means of the shaft 14. This shaft let is further controlled by a clearly in Fig. A cover handle 15 whose purposes will be presently explained. The element 12 is also in the na-. ture of a handle and has at its topextremity two protruding arms 16, 16 which are adapted to enter notches 17, 17 provided in the two parts of the element 11. The arm 12 has also intermediate its ends a pair of arms 18, 18 which are adapted when the cover plate is closed and the handle 12 in the position shown in Fig. 1 to engage the under surfaces of lugs 19, 19 secured to the cylinder 1.
The elements 11 and 12 are in the nature of toggles and together with the handle 15 secure a complete closure of the cover plate 4 when in the position shown in Fig. 1. The

right hand extremity preferably by encircling the tube 2 and fastened at its left hand entremity to a slide 22, which is held in sliding position upon the cylinder 1 by means of the headed bolts 23, This plate 22 carries a ring 24 which when the parts are in the position shown encircles the handie 12 and prevents its movement. The arm 21 likewise is directly across the path of the handle 15 to thereby prevent the movement of this handle 15, the parts being in the position shown. Now should the valve handle 9 however be moved to release the pressure from the cylinder, then this movement. will lower the arm 21 and the plate 22 until the arm 15 is free to be. rotated to unlock the devices 1 1 and 12, whereafter the arm 12 may be actuated, it now being clear of the ring 24; so that the actuation of this arm 12 may release the arms 18 from the lugs 19 to thereby permit the cover to be opened. A bracket 25 is used to hold the pipe 2 and its connecting elements in position. A pin 26 pivotally unites the handle 9 with the rod 20. i

This release of course need not take place untilv the confined pressure within the pressure from the source of supply has been cut off. Now should the cover plate 4: be open, the mechanism so far described would not prevent the.re-application of the pressure from the source of supply to the applied pressure side of the piston within the cylinder. .VVith the cover open, if the pressure is applied'the piston of course would be blown out like a projectile. Referring" however more particularly to Fig. 5, I will describe the means which I set forth to-prevent this violent projection of the piston from. the cylinder in the event of the application of pressure thereto with the cover open. The piston herein is preferably made of two parts to facilitate constructional requirements, which parts consist of the upper portion 27 and the lower 28. A hollow portion 25) may be provided which communicates by means of ducts 30 to the applied pressure side of the piston within the cylinder. Bolts 31 may be provided having adjusting de vices in the form of distance pieces .32 and nuts 33 for the purpose of adjusting the packing mechanism as will presently appear. 1 Suitable ducts 34-, 3% lead from the chamber 29 to the ports 35, 35, which ports are nor mally closed by the plates 36, 36 when the piston is entirely within the cylinder -1. In this illustration of Fig. 5 the piston is shown as being removed partially from the =.-ylinder, that is, it is shown as having risen above the top of the cylinder on account of the application of pressure with the cover open. The plates 36 are automatically closed and held in position by the walls of the cylinder 1, but are blown outwardly when the piston in amsw'er to this wrongfully applied pressure rises above the upper line of the cylinder, thereby permitting this pr sber 29, and duct 34 to the atmosphere, thus preventing the piston from being blown outwardly beyond the position shown in Fig. 5. I have thus described one form which my invention may take, but it will of course be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many modifications may be made from a cover plate for said cylinder, means to permit opening and closing said cover plate, means to control the supply of pressure to the said cylinder, and means controlled by said pressure controlling means to control the cover controlling means.

A device of the character described having a cylinder, a piston movable therein, a cover plate for said cylinder, toggle mechanism to permit opening and closing said cover plate, a valve controlling handle to control the supply of pressur to the said cylinder, a locking handle to? said toggle mechanism, and means controlled by said pressure controlling handle to control the cover controlling means.
5. A device of the character described having a cylinder, a piston movable therein, a cover plate for said cylinder, toggle mechanism to permit opening and closing said cover plate, a valve controlling handle to control the supply of pressure to the said cylinder, :1 locking handle for said toggle mechanism, and means controlled by said pressure controlling handle to control the cover controlling means, said means including a sliding plate.
6. A device of the character described having a cylinder, a piston movable therein, a cover plate for said cylinder, toggle mechanism to permit opening and closing said cover plate, a valve controlling handle to control the supply of pressure to the said cylinder, a locking handle for said toggle mechanism, and means controlled by said pressure controlling handle to control the cover controlling means, said means including a slidin plate, a catch on said plate, a bar to ho d said locking handle, and a connecting rod.
