Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 24, 1914.
Application filed June 28, 1911; Serial No, 635,757.
1 b all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, CHRISTOPHER IV. LE- vaLLiii', a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers, of which the following is a specification,
The object of my invention is to produce an inhaler that can be conveniently carried in the pocket. and is adapted for use in the treatment of throat, nasal and lung diseases, and which may be used for inhaling either through the mouth or the nostrils.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, Figure 1 is a side View of the inhaler. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the perforated stopper. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the porous holder for the medicament that may be employed.
In the drawings, 2 designates a hollow container adapted to receive a piece of sponge, 3, or other porous and absorbent substance which is to be charged with the medicament that it may be desired to use in the treatment of whatever disease the inhaler is used to alleviate. One end of the container is shaped into a neck 5 to receive a cap at. The neck may be screw-threaded and the cap correspondingly threaded to engage therewith, as indicated in Fig. l, or it may be smooth as represented in Fig. 2. A rib or flange 6 preferably separates the neck of the container from the main body thereof in order to limit the extent to which the cap may be forced upon the neck. The cap is hollow and its outer end is perforated, as indicated at 7. The outer end of the container is likewise perforated, as indicated at 8.
It sometimes happens that the liquid taken up by the absorbing holder, 3, drains therefrom into the inhaler and tends to escape through the openings 7 and 8. As this is objectionable for many reasons I have formed the container 2 and the cap 4, which are preferably made from some noncorrosive metal,as indicated in the drawings, that is, the perforated end of each of these parts is inturned immediately around the aperture, forming internal drip or collecting grooves 9, 9'.
10 designates a stopper through the longitudinal center of which is formed an aperture 11. This stopper is inserted into the neck of the container 2, and may be of a length to extend beyond this neck and into the cap 4 when seated upon the neck, as indicated in Fig. 2. The stopper maintains the absorbent holder 3 in place and also tends to prevent the free passage into the cap of any liquid which may drain from the holder.
The holder 3 may be provided with a loop 12 to which is secured a cord 13, these serving as means by which the holder may be easily withdrawn from the container.
The container is preferably tapering in exterior configuration and is of a size adapting it to be inserted into a nostril. The cap is shaped to be held between the lips when the inhalations are taken through the mouth. I have found it of advantage to provide the cap with an exterior groove 1 so that the inhaler may be securely held by the teeth while being used.
From the foregoing description and an examination of the drawings it will be seen that the inhaler that constitutes the subject of my invention is very simple in construction, and moreover, the parts thereof are easily separable and of such shape as to be readily cleaned and sterilized.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In an inhaler, the combination of an open ended container provided with a neck, an absorbent holder within the container, a cap fitting the neck of the container, and a centrally perforated stopper fitted in the neck of the container, the container and the cap being perforated attheir ends, substantially as set forth.
2. In an inhaler, the combination of a tapering container adapted to fit the nostril, its smaller end being perforated and inturned about the perforation and its larger end formed with a neck, a cap fitting the said neck and having its outer end inturned and perforated and shaped to constitute a mouth piece, a porous holder for the medicine in the container, and a perforated stopper between the porous holder and the mouth piece, substantially as set forth,
CHRISTOPHER .V. LEVALLEY.
