- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 18, 1912. Serial No, 684,653.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. DonYnn,
a citizen of the United States, and resldmg at St. Louis, 'in the State of .Missour1,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in String Nailing-Machines, of wh1ch the following is a specification. Y This invention relates to nailing machines, and more particularly to nailingmachmes of the type known as string nallmg machines.
This invention as to certain of its features is an improvement on the machine shown and described in-Patent No. 1,026,028, granted May 14, 1912. v v
One of the objects of this invention is to arrange the mechanism and provide means whereby a fastener may be properly positioned in the fastener-guiding and receiving throat so that it may properly dnven by the driver. 1
Furtherobjec'ts will appear from the detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figuiie 1 is a front elevation of a machlne embody ng this invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar /view with the mechanism in another position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
15 designates the machine head which sup-- ports the fastener inserting mechanism. A driver 16 is mounted in the. lower end of a driver bar 17 which is, supported in bearings on the head and connected by a pitman 18 to a crank '19 on the'drive shaft 20. A throat 21 is-pivoted at 22 on the head and has cooperating therewith, a string na1l guide 23 also pivoted at 22 and moved clockwise by means of a spring 24. A cutter blade 25 is mounted upon an arm 25 p1voted on a lever 26 and yieldingly connected therewith through a spring 26. The lever 26 is pivoted on the head and 1s provlded with a fork embracing and engagln an eccentric 27 mounted uponthe drive s aft. An 'awl 28 is mounted upon an awl carrier 29 which in turn is mounted for swinging and sliding movement in the machine head. The awl carrier is swung by means of a lever 30 having .a cam roll engaging a cam track in the cam wheel 31 and is slid by means of .a lever 32 having a cam roll 33 1n a counter-clockwise direction by means of a lever 35 having a: cam roll engaging a cam surface on cam wheel 31. r Y
The mechanism is 's 1 1bstantially of the same construction as the mechanism shown and described 'in. application Serial No. 724,680, filed October 8, v.1912. During the operation of the machine the awl carrier operates the awl to pierce and feed the work, and also engages and moves the throat from. the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2, and the throat is returned by means of a spring and the arm 35, as fully described in said appli Patented 'Mar. 24, 1914.
engaging a cam 34. The throat 'is moved 25 is moved downwardly the spring 26 is compressed and the cutter bears against'the string nail guide so as to move the lower end of the; same to the right Fig. 1. As this cutter engages the top face of the throat further movement imparted through the lever 26 will cause the cutter to move to the right Fig, 1 and cut the lowermost nail from the string. In Fig. 2 the parts are shown 1n position just after a'nail has been'severed. The cutter is now under tension and bears not only with considerable .force against the string nailguide, but also upon the upper face of the'throat. If now the throat is moved back to position in alinement with the driver immediately after the nail has been severed-,- the cutter bearing on the head 7 of the cut nail will tend to move the head thereof to the left (Fig. 2) and thus displace it in the throat so that it will not be properly positioned with respect to the driver, thereby causing the driver to break. It is necessary that the driver passage be wider at the top than the head of the nail so as to permit the lowermost nail to start to feed into'the throat as the throat and string nail guide move into cooperative relation. This construction although necessary, will cause the nail to be displaced in the throat by thecutter.
in accordance with this invention the co centric 27 and the cam 34: are so constructed and so positioned relatively on the drive shaft and with respect to their fork and cam roll, that the pressure of the cutter on the upper face of the throat will be relieved before the throat starts to swing back into alinement'with the driver. This is shown in Fig. 2. In this figure the eccentric 27 is at dead center with respect to its fork and is ready to start to move the lever 26 clockwise. The cam 34: is however at this time in full engagement with its cam roll 33 and will remain in engagement therewith while the drive shaft turns through a short arc.
The lever 26 will therefore he swung on its pivot for a short distance in a clockwise direction before the awl begins to move to the right and before the throat begins to move back to its position in alinement with the driver. The tension of the spring 26 (which is compressed when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2) is thus relieved so as to relieve the pressure of the cutter on the throat and on the head of the nail in the driver passage before this throat starts to move back into alinement with the driver, The parts are so arranged as not only to relieve the tension of the spring, but also. to raise and retract the cutter a short distance from the upper face of the throat before the throat starts to move back. As the pressure of the cutter is thus relieved, this cutter will not'bear upon the head of the nail in the throat, so that this nail is not displaced when the throat is moved back into alinement with the driver.
The throat is shown and described in my divisional application Serial No. 774,379, filed June 18, 1913.
Ttis obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from this invention, and it is therefore to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specific construction shown; and described.
