GRIP-SOCKET.
P Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 24, 1914:.
Application filed May 22, 1913. Serial No. 769,324.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY B. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Grip-Socket, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grip-sockets for well drills in which fastener means operate in conjunction with a socket to grip a drill tool and recover the same from a drilled well casing; and its objects are, first, to provide more eflicient means for gripping an ordinary drill such as commonly used for well drilling purposes,
when lost in the well casing; and, second,
to afford better facilities for the recovery of such lost tool from a deep well casing of a drilled well. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows a vertical section of the entlre device in connection with a drill shaft, such as my mechanism is adapted to engage.
Referring thereto, A is a drill tool for drilling wells, such as are in common use, and to which I make no claim.
B is the body portion of my improved grip-socket, shown in vertical cross section, for better illustration of the operative parts thereof. It is bored longitudinally to form a socket a. of size sufficient to admit the upper end of the drill-bit freely, and is flared outwardly at the bottom of the socket is so as to more readily find and cause the stem at to enter the socket; and its upper end I) is adapted to engage any ordinary cable or rod attachment for lifting purposes the particulars of which need not be mentioned, as no claim is made thereto. It is also provided with flattened spaces 0 a for clamping purposes, and downwardly slanting cut away spaces (Z d, leading to inwardly and downwardly sloping cavities j, adapted to admit a ball of hardened steel 2' therethrough into said socket so as to engage the stem of said drill bit A under a shoulder thereof it, substantially as shown. For greater safety a series of similar shoulders may be made in the stem thereof, but these are not absolutely essential. To prevent escape of the ball outwardly an abutment e is secured above the orifice of the cavity j by a set screw f. A spiral spring 9 is set insaid I cavity against the ball therein and against said abutment, whereby the ball will more securely impinge against the surface of the b1t stock; and as many cavities and balls may be provided as the size of the stock B will admit of, and the cavities are made with as steep an incline as possible. For convenience, the lower end of the cavity should not be bored out quite enough to permit the ball z to fall into the socket.
The operation of my improved device is such that when it is let down into the casing of a drilled well for the purpose of recovering a lost drill tool, the socket will find its way over the upper end of said tool, the several balls in their respective cavities will drop down the same into engagement with the said tool under said shoulder, and, by means of the said slope, said balls will grip said tool in such manner that the same may be extracted from said casing, by any suit able lifting tackle attached to said gripsocket. Said tool may be removed from said socket by removing the abutments e, and turning said socket upside down, whereby said balls will release their said grip.
. I do not limit myself to more matter of form, and the device may be modified within the scope of my invention.
I am aware that the use of gravity balls in connection with sloping pockets in gripsockets for the purpose'stated is not new, and such I do not broadly claim.
My improvement lies in providing cutaway spaces externally in the body of the grip-socket immediately above the sloping cavities or pockets j, whereby the latter may be readily bored and access may be had thereto from the exterior of the body, and in providing detachable abutments fitted to rest in said spaces over said sloping cavities, respectively, and the insertion of removable spiral springs between the said balls and said abutments, respectively, adapted to press said balls downwardly and inwardly against said tool stock A when it enters the grip-socket, and to facilitate the removal of said stock therefrom.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a grip-socket, hollowed out longitudinally, a body portion, cut-away spaces in said'body, removable abutments secured in said spaces, sloping cavities leading from hand this 23 day of April, 1913, in presence said abutments to the hollow of said body, of two Witnesses. balls in said cavities, and spiral springs between said balls and said abutments remov- 5 able with the latter, substantially as set Witnesses:
forth. I-IIRAM SWARTZ,
'In Witness whereof, I hereunto set my MAHLON ROUGH.
HENRY B. YOUNG.
