Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 24, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST WRoUcH'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nelson, in the county of Nuckolls and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable-Forming Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wire cable forming machines.
One object of the invention is to provide a cable forming machine having an improved construction and arrangement of wire holding and twisting mechanism by means of which the individual strands of wire are twisted together and the twisted strands evenly wound or twisted around the main or core wire of the cable.
Another object is to provide a machine of this character having an improved reeling features of construction combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. V 1.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal section through one set of wire twisting or winding mechanism; Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the cable guiding mechanism and its operating screw by means of which the finished cable is carried back and forth and wound upon a spool or reel.

Referring more particularly to the drawlngs, 1 denotes a supporting frame which may be of any suitable construction and in whlch is arranged a series of bearing standards 2, and 4. In the bearing standard 2 and ad acent upright or end piece of the frame is revolubly mounted a tubular shaft 5. In the bearing standards 3 is revolubly mounted a tubular shaft 6. In the standards 4 is revolubly a driving shaft 7 on which are fixedly mounted driving pulleys 8 and 9. The pulley 8 is operatively connected by a crossed belt with a drive pulley 11 on the shaft 5 whereby the latter is revolved. The pulley 9 on the shaft 7 is operatively connected by a straight belt 12 with a pulley 13 fixed on the tubular shaft 6 whereby the latter is driven inan opposite direction from the shaft 5. On the shaft 7 is also fixedly -mounted a main drive pulley 14 by means of which said shaft 7 maybe connected with and driven by any suitable power.
Arranged in the frame 1 around the shaft v5 is an internal gear ring 15, said ring being fixedly supported in concentric relation to the shaft 5 by upper and lower supporting or holding bars 16, the inner ends of which are secured to the opposite sides of the ring in any suitable manner. Fixedly mounted on the outer end of the shaft 5 is a bearing bracket 17 which is adapted to revolubly support a spool 18 on which is wound the inner or core wire 19 of the cable. The wire 19 is carried forwardly through the tubular shafts 5 and 6 and has wound thereon the additional wires forming the cable. On the shaft 5 adjacent to one side of the gear ring 15 is fixedly mounted a hub 20 having thereon a series of radially projecting arms 21 of which there may be any desired number, three of which are shown in the present instance. On the outer'ends of the arms 21 are formed bearings 22 in which are revolubly On one end of each of the shafts 23 is fixedly mounted a .spur gear pinion 24;, said pinions meshing with the teeth of the internal gear ring 15 whereby when the shaft 5 is driven and the arms 21' and gears thus carried around the gears will berevolved by their engagement with the teeth of the gear ring thus revolving the shafts 23. Fixedly mounted on the opposite ends of the shafts 23 from the inions 24 are cross heads 25 on each en of which are formed bearing brackets 26 in which are revolubly mounted wire holding spools 27 the wires 28 of which are twisted wire 19 which extends through the shaft 5' as hereinbefore described.
In the outer portion of the frame 1 around the shaft 6 and supported in conentric relation thereto by supporting bars 31 is an internal gear ring 32 corresponding to the gear rings 15 but of considerably greater diameter than the latter. Fixedly mounted on the shaft 6 adjacent to the gear ring 32 is a hub 33 on which is formed a series of radially projecting arms 34 having on their outer ends bearings 35 in which are revolubly mounted short shafts 36. On one end of the short shafts 36 is fixedly mounted a spur gear pinion 37 which meshes with the teeth of the gear ring 32. On the opposite ends of each of the shafts 36 are cross heads 38 having on their outer ends bearing brackets 39 in which are revolubly mounted wire holding spools 40 the wires 41 of which are twisted together by the revolving movement of the cross heads and spools as the wire is unwound from the latter; Any number of spool carrying arms 34 may be provided according to the size or number of wires the cable is to contain, the machine in the present instance being'shown as provided with eight arms each of which carries two spools of wire as hereinbefore described.
Fixedly mounted on the shafts 6 at a suitable distance from the hub 33 and arms 34 is a second wire winding or twistin plate 42 having formedtherein a series of wires receiving apertures 43 through which the twisted wires 41 are adapted to pass and by means of which said twisted wires are wound upon the part of the cable containing the core wire 19 and the twisted wires 28, said portion of the wire passing through the tubularshaft 6 as shown. After thus forming the cable the latter passes to a suitable reeling or spooling mechanism com prising a reel supporting and operating shaft 44 which is revolubly mounted in supporting standards 45 arranged in one end of the frame 1. On the shaft 44 is operatively mounted the spool or reel 46 upon which the finished cable is to be wound. On one end of the shaft 44 is fixedly mounted a drive pulley '47 which is connected by a driving belt 48 to a pulley 49 on a counter shaft 50 revolubly mounted below the reel and having fixedly mounted on its inner end a bevel gear 51 which is adapted to mesh with is similar gear 52 fixed on the adjacent end of the main drive shaft 7 Revolubly mounted in the supporting standards 53 arranged in the frame 1 in front of the reel supporting standard 45 is a cable guiding or screw shaft 54 in which is formed a continuous spiral thread 55 which extends from one end of the shaft to the other. On one end of the screw shaft 55 is fixedly mounted a sprocket gear pinion 56 which is operatively connected by a sprocket chain57 to a sprocket gear 58 fixedly mounted on the adjacentend of the reel operating shaft 44. Operativ'ely engaged with the feed screw or shaft 54 is a feeding or guiding nut 56 provided with an internal tooth 57 a which may be of any suitable construction, but which is preferably in the form of a screw having apointed inner end which, when screwed through the side of the nut, projects inwardly and engages the thread 55 whereby when the shaft is turned the nut 56 will be carried back and forth across the shaft. On the nut 56 is attached a guide ulley 58" through which the cable passes a er being completed in the manner described and by means of which the same is carried back and forth from one end of the shaft 44 to the other thereby evenlywinding the cable on the spool or reel.
By means of a cable forming machine constructed as herein shown and described a cable of any desired size or containing any desired number of strands may be quickly and easily formed and the strands thereof evenly and closely wound together thus making a smooth tightly twisted cable.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention; what I claim is:
