To all whom it may concern Be it known that. I, EDGAR H. MUMFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J olt-Ramining of which the following is a Mechanisms, specification.
The invention relates to jolt ramming mechanism and has for its primary objects;

Briefly stated, my apparatus comprises an anvil, a mold supporting member or cradle, and an over-head operating rig by means of which the mold supporting memher is raised and dropped upon the anvil thus compacting the material in the mold. When desired a single operating means may be used in connection with a plurality of anvils by making such means movable laterally over the anvils, as by mounting such means or a part of it upon a travellng frame.
Referring first to the arrangement of parts as illustrated in Figure 1;.1 is the anvil which comprises preferably a concrete base portion provided with a cap plate 2 of metal rigidly secured to the concrete; 3 is the mold supporting member or cradle which is designed to be repeatedly lifted and dropped upon the anvil, which, under some conditions, may be a part of a concrete floor; 4 is the mold or flask mounted upon the cradle; 5--5 are ropes, preferably four in number, placed at the corners of the mold supporting member 3; 66 are turn-buckles whereby the cradle may be leveled; 7 1s a guide frame to which the upper ends of the ropes 5-5 are secured, which gulde frame is maintained against lateral movement by means of guides 8-8, which may be of any preferred form; 9 is an operating rope connected to the frame 7 in the manner shown and extending over the pulleys 10 and 11, and to an operating cylinder 12, such cylinder being preferably operated by means of an air pressure and having its piston connected to the rope 9 in the manner illustrated. It will be understood that in operation, the piston and the piston rod of the cylinder is given a rapid vibration whereby the cradle 3 is rapidly lifted and dropped upon the anvil, thus compacting the sand.
It will be seen from the foregoing that my apparatus is much lighter and less cum bersome than jolt ramming apparatus as heretofore constructed, that no pit is necessary for receiving the operating mechanism as is the case with the ordinary type of ramming mechanism wherein the cylinder and piston are beneath the cradle, and that the weight of the parts dropped upon the anvil is much less than in the ordinary type of apparatus wherein the piston is carried by the cradle,-so that a large portion of the objectionable shock and vibration to the floor of the foundry is done away with. The operating cylinder may be located at a considerable distance from the anvil where conditions require it, and if desired, one operating cylinder may be used to actuate a plurality of ramming devices by merely making the rope 9 disconnectible from the frame 7, which function is of course not present in such form of apparatus as heretofore constructed, wherein an operating piston and cylinder are required for each piece of apparatus.
The invention comprehends the use of any desired means for securing the reciprocation of the rope 9, such, for instance, as the motor illustrated in Figure 8. As here shown, an electric motor 14 is provided, which motor operates an eccentric 15 connected to the motor by means of the speed reducing gears 16, 17 and 18. Any other equivalent form of operating means might obviously be substituted for the eccentric and its operating means.
In Figure 2, still another modified form of apparatus is illustrated, which apparatus is particularly designed for use where a single operating means is designed to be used with a plurality of different anvils. Two anvils 11' only are shown, but it will be understood that any number may be used in connection with the mechanism to be hereinafter described. The rigs above the anvils are substantially in all particulars the same as the one described in connection with Figure 1, the difference over such apparatus residing primarily in the means for giving the cradles their reciprocatory movement. This is accomplished by means of the pneumatic cylinder 12 mounted upon a truck on an over-head track 19. The piston rod of the cylinder is provided with a hook 20 so that it may be disengaged from the rigs. By moving the truck with its cylinder 12 along the track 19, it may be brought to a position over any one of a plurality of anvils, so that the one operating means may be conveniently used to operate any one of a plurality of mechanisms. The projections 8 serve to sup-port the frames 7 when 15 the frames are disconnected from the hook 20. It will be understood as to this modification, that the invention is not limited to the use of any particular type of movable crane or cradle reciprocating means, but that the invention comprehends broadly the use of a shiitable over-head operating means in connection with a plurality of jolt ramming rigs.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and 2. A jolt ramming mechanism comprising in combination an impact anvil mounted on the foundry floor, a mold table, and means for jolting the mold table comp-rising an operating motor, an overhead reciprocable guide member supported from the superl structure'of the foundry, a connection between the motor and the guide member, and a plurality of cables for supporting the mold table from the guide member, the guide member and anvil being so arranged that unobstructed access is had to the anvil to manipulate the mold parts.
