Application filed April 9, 1913. Serial No. 759,895.
1,G9(),44, Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, SEVERIANO ANTONIO DE Cnsrrnrro, a citizen of the Republic of Brazil, residing at B. Viama 40, S. Ghris-. tovo, Itio de J aneiro, Brazil, but at present temporarily residing at Villa Laura, Kingsland, Clayton Road, Jesmo-nd, in the city and county of Newcastle-upon-Tyne,Eng land, naval engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relatto Ordnance Breech Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ordnance breechmechanism.
One type of breech-block at present used in ordnance breech-mechanism is fashioned with, or is stepped axially or lengthwise to form, two portions of difierent diameters or sizes and both parallel or both tapered or coned or one parallel an dthe other ta-' ered or coned, said portions being provided with interrupted or segmental screw-threads so arranged that the interruption, spaces or plain parts on one portion do not aline with those on the other portion. In another type of breech-block which is not so fashioned or stepped axially or lengthwise the interrupted or segmental screw-threads stepper dadially, such radially-stepped interrupted or segmental screw-threads being known as Welin threads.
The object of this invention is to provide a breech-block which will combine the adof the two types referred to and ac- I fashion the or step it axially or two or more portions of different diameters or sizes, and I provide said portions with Welin or radiallystepped interrupted or segmental screwthreads so arrange that the interruptions, spaces or plain parts on one portion do not aline with those on the other portion or portions.
I will fully describe my invention with or radially-stepped interrupted or segmental screw threads a, (1. and I), b respectively, which threads however are so arranged that thGIDtEIILIPt IODS,SPACES or plainparts a on the portion a do not aline or coincide with the interruptions, spaces or plain parts 6 on the other portion 2). The diameters of the two portions a and b are such that the diameter across the outermost screw-threads b of the portion 7) does not exceed the diameter across the interruptions, spaces or pla1n parts a The threads a, a and b, b are preferably so arranged that the threads I) aline with the interruptions, spaces or plain portions a the threads aline with the threads at, and theinterruptlons, spaces or plain parts 6 aline with the threads a A gap on the smaller axial step is shown disposed in front of a threaded part of the smallest radius on the larger axial step. The gaps are so disposed that the threaded portion extends from end to end of the plug axially in certain places.
If desired the block may be fashioned with more than two portions of different diameters having the screw-threads thereon arranged as above described, and each portion may be provided with more than two segements of radially-stepped interrupted or se Further, both or gmental screw-threads. all the portions of the block may be parallel as illustrated, or both or all may be tapered or coned, or one or more. may be parallel and the other or others may be tapered or coned. The breech of the gun to which the block is fitted is of course correspondingly fashioned, and it will be seen that when the block is closed and locked within the breech of the gun, it will be in engagement with and supported by the breech at some part or other along every portion of its periphery. What I desire to claim by Letters Patent 1s:-
1. A breech block fashioned with a plurality of portions of different diameters,
lengthwise to form,
reference to the accompanying drawings said portions being provided with radially whereinstepped interrupted threads that is having Figure 1 1s a side view of one form of plain parts and threaded parts so arrange breech-block in accordance therewith, and Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the breechblock illustrated is fashioned with two portions at and b of different diameters, the rear portion (4 having the greater diameter. The peripheries of the two portions a and I) each provided with the well-known W that the plain parts on one portion are out of alinement with the plain parts of another ortion, the construction being such that the threaded portion extends from end to end of the plug axially in certain places.
2. A breech block fashioned with a pluof portions of different diameters I'ality being provided with radially said portions stepped interrupted threads, that is having that the'plain parts of one portion are out plain parts and threaded parts, so arranged of alinement With the plain parts of another that the plain parts of one portion are out portion one of said portions being parallel,
the construction being such that the threaded axiallyin certain places.
portion extends from end to end of the plug In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed 2 axially in certain places. my name in the presence of two subscribing 3. A breech block fashioned With a plu- Witnesses.
rality of portions of different diameters SEVERIANO ANTONIO DE OASTILHO.
said portions being provided With radially Witnesses:
stepped interrupted threads, that is having FRED H. DUKE,
plain parts and threaded parts, so arranged H. NIXON.
