To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Ciminncs O. MICHAEL- SEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gmaha, in the county of Douglas and Stato of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gre-Classiiiers.` of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to screening and separating machines, and it is theobject of my invention to provide an eilieient and economieal mechanism for screening and classifying crushed or pulvcrizcd ores, especially where the crushed or pulveri'zed material is handled while mixed with a sufficient volume of water to make it substantially fluid.
Further objects of my invention will be fully set forth in the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a classifier embodying my invention,Fig. 2 is a seetion on the plane of the line @@w of Fig. 1, showing the driving gear, Fig. 3 is a det-ail longitudinal section showing some of the parts on a larger scale than in Fig. 1., Figs. 4 and 5 are side and end views, respectively, of one of the screen-frames, and Fig. 6 is a detail section through the edge of one of the screen-frames.
Tn carrying out my invention I provide a tubular shaft 1 which is revolubly mounted in suitable 4bearings 2, srid bearings loe-- ing disposed on standards 3, 4 and 5 so that the shaft is inclined slightly from a horizontal position. The said standards are preferably supported upon masonry7 foundations, as shown. In the upper part of the standards 4 and 5 is journaled a shaft 6, on the ends of which are carried the drive-pulleys 7. On the central part of said shaft is a gear 8 which meshes with a gear 9 mounted on a shaft l() which is also journaled in bearings on the standards 4 and 5. The
gear 9 meshes with a gear 11 mounted concentrically with the shaft 1, the said gear being yieldably connected with a hub-body 12 secured to the shaft. To the hub-body is adjustably secured a plate 13 which carries at its outer edge rollers 14 adapted toengage similar rollers 15 mounted on a plate 16 which is adjustably secured to the gear 9. The shaft 6 being driven at a uniform speed imparts a like motion to the gears 8, 9 and 11, but the movement of the hub-body 12 and shaft 1 is intermittently retarded by the interference of the rollers 15 and 16, the

variation ofmiovcment between the gear 11 and hub-body 12 being permitted by the yieldable connection thereof, as fully set forth in my pending application for patent on interrupted-drive gearing, filedV August 3, 1911, Serial No. 642,216. The shaft 1 is thus given an intermittent or alternately re tarded and laccelerated movement.
Upon the shaft 1 near the hearing carried by the standard 4 is a circular peripherallyflanged plate 17 having a central hub-por tion which fits around and is secured to the shaft. The said plate supports 'and closes one end of a cylinder 18 arranged concentrically .with the shaft. The other end of the cylinder is open and is supported and connected with the shaft by a spider 19.
Similar spiders 20 and 21 carry rings 22 and 23, respectively, axially alincd with the cylinder. Upon said rings 22 and 23, and upon the cylinder 18 adjoining the open end thereof, are secured flange-rings 24 which are arranged so as to form annular wedgeshaped channels at the adjacent ends of the rings and cylinder. Ribbed transversely curved rectangular frames Q5 are provided, of which the end portions 26 have the form of beveled ringsegments adapted to fit into the annular channels beneath the flangerings 24. Along the longitudinal edges of each frame at-one side is a tongue 27 and at the other a channel or rabbct 28, into which the tongue of the adjoining frame tits to form a lap-joint at the adjoining edges of the frames, as shown in Fig. 5. At intervals along,r the longitudinal edges of the 29 and in the inner edges of said lugsare formed channels adapted to receive the edges of the screens 30. The saidedges 'of the screens are preferably covered with bindingstrips 31, U-shaped in section, as shown in Fig. 6, and one or more reinforcing-strips 32 may be extended across the central part of `the screens, on the inside thereof and secured thereto, as shown in 4. The screens may be removed from or placed in the frames by merely sliding them longitudinally through the channels in the lugs 29. By this means of securing the screens the same are held so as to form a practically continuous sheet or llaycr coincident with the inner sides of the frames. New, having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine et' the class described, a revoluble shaft, -a cylinder mounted thereon and having an open end, cylindrical screens forming a continuation of the cylinder heyond the open end thereof, means for Ifeeding,- water and the material to be screened into the cylinder, and means t'or distributing Water onto materials which have passed acros a portion oit the Screens, Said means comprising a pair of conical members slidable on the shaft and having an annular opening between them.
2. In a machine ot' the class described, a .revoluble shaft, a cylindrical Screen mounted thereon concentrically therewith` means` for 'feeding water and materiale to be Screened into one end of the :ylindrical Screen, and means tor distributing water onto male riale which have passed over a part ot the screen, said means comprising' a, conical member Secured upon the shaft and eXtending adjacent to the screen Surface, and means tor supplying' water upon the inner Surface of said conical member.
