Among the objects oi. this invention are to provide a vise, chuck or work-holder adapted to be used upon a variety oi machine tools, as dii'ill-jiresses, shapers, hack saws, etc, to provide 2 work-holder having a great range of adjusti'nent with regard to its position on the work table of the machine tool; to provide a work-holder, the movable jaw of which may be quickly moved toward and away from the t'ixed jaw; to n'ovide a chuck i'roi'islructimi consisting largely of castings and requiring a minimum of ma chine work; to produce a work-holder ha ving large jaws in order that work of various dimensions may be securely clamped; to produce a work-holder ol the class mentioned which shall be comparatively light: and in general to improve the etliciency and adaptability of this class of chuck.

The lower side at the base 1 is recesscd at 8 to receive the head of the bolt 7. This bolt may be used in securing jigs or the like to the work-holder. The bolt may also be used to secure the workholdcr to the table A by placing the head of said bolt in the T-slot a and tightening up the nut t). \Vhen it is desirable to secure the workholder in a diagonal or angular position on the work table, the base l may be swung to the desired position and the nut S) tightened to clamp the work-holder in place. It will be seen that the slot (3 permits of a wide latitude ol rotational and lateral adjustment: ol the work holder with respect to the bolt 7. It, when the w('n*k-holder is placed diagonally ot' the work table. the bolt 7 is not sullicicnt to secure the work-holder in place. any suitable ai lditional means may be employed, such as common clamps (not shown) engaging the work table and the side flanges 10 of the base 1.
A groove 11 o'l, dovetail form in cross-sew tion extends longitui linally ol the base 1 from the jaw 5 to the opposite end of the base. The movable jaw l2 is provided with a foot .13 which has a dovetail guide 'l-lthat is slidably mounted in the groove ll. in or upon the bottom of the groove 11 is 'FOI'II'lQtl a series ol ratchet or inclined locking teeth 15 with which engages a tooth to on a block l7. Said block is slldable within a slot 18 formed in the Foot. l3, the lower portion 18 of said slot being wider than the upper part. The block 17 is provided with lateral wings l5) lying within the portion 18 oi the slot 18. A spindle 20 extends through a tapped opening 21. in the block 17 and is arranged to bear at one end against the movable jaw 12. The opposite end oi the spindle :20 is provided with a crank or handle 22. The lower side of the block 17 opposite to the tooth to is cut away as at ll in order to permit o'l tilting said block with relation to the base 1, to lift the tooth 10 away from the locking teeth 15. Assuming the spindle 20 to be out of engagement with the jaw 12, the block 17 may be tilted to disengage the tooth 16 from the teeth 15 by raising the outer end of the spindle 20. The jaw 12 may then be slid freely toward and away from the relatively fixed jaw 5.
WVhen a piece of work is to be secured in the work-holder, it is laid between the aws 5 and 12, the movable jaw 12 is pushed up to the work, and the spindle 20 is rotated to press said movable jaw firmly against the work, the thrust being transmitted to the teeth 15 of the base 1 through the tooth 16.
By reference to Figs. 1 and 3, it will be seen that the edges of the jaws 5 and 12 at one side of the work-holder are alined or flush with one of the flanges 10. It will thus be seen that, if desired, the work-holder may be turned upon its side, the work-holder being secured in such position on the table A by means of an ordinary clamp (not shown) engaging the table A and the interior surface 1 of the base 1. Said surface is provided by recessing the lower side of the base, such recessing also serving to lighten the construction. It will be seen that the workholder may be quickly and firmly secured in any desired position upon any standard work table, and that the movable jaw 12 may be rapidly moved toward and away from the fixed jaw. The work holder is very simple, consisting, as it does, of but four pieces, namely the base, the movable jaw, the block 17, and the screwthreaded spindle. The first mentioned three parts may be castings, and require no machine work except the formation of the tapped opening 21 in the block 16. By reason of their ample size the jaws 5 and 12 are adapted to hold large pieces.
When clamping a piece of work, the pressure upon the block 17 causes the wings 19 to press against the foot 13, whereby the guide 14: is pressed tightly against the undercut walls of the groove 11,thus positively preventing the jaw 12 from tilting or swinging out of alinemcnt with the 5. This feature is of especial value when a piece of work is clamped between the ends of the jaws Or between the top or bottom portions of the jaws. The weight of the overhanging portion of the spindle 20 is suflicient to lift the guide 14 against the undercut walls of the groove 11, and any increase in such lifting or upward pressure, caused by the clamping of the work, augments the force with which the jaw 12 is held against tilting with reference to the jaw 5. This means for pressing the guide surfaces firmly together allows the guide portions to be formed with sufficient clearance between the surfaces so that they may be used without machining. The clearance allows the rough surfaces to pass freely, while the tilting brings the surfaces firmly together when the holder is in use; and the roughness of the surfaces increases the rigidity of the jaws.
The embodiment herein shown is susceptible of modification, within the scope of the appended claims, hence the invention is not limited to the details set forth.
I claim as my invention:
1. A work-holder comprising a base having a fixed jaw, said base having an undercut groove therein, locking teeth in said groove, a movable jaw having a foot slidable upon said base, said foot being provided with a guide fitting in said undercut groove, said foot having an undercut slot therein, a member movable with relation to said movable jaw and having a guide cooperating with said slot, said member adapted to engage said locking teeth, and means carried by said member for moving said movable jaw.
2. A work-holder comprising a base having a fixed jaw, said base having an undercut groove therein, the upper surfaces of said groove being beveled, locking teeth in said groove, a movable jaw having a foot slidable upon said base, said foot being provided with a guide fitting in said undercut groove and having beveled surfaces adjacent the beveled surfaces of said groove, said foot having an undercut slot therein parallel with said groove, a member movable with relation to said movable jaw and having a guide cooperating with said slot, said member adapted to engage said locking teeth, and means carried by said member for moving said movable aw.
3. A work-holder comprising a base carrying a fixed jaw, said base having an undercut groove therein, a movable aw having a foot slidable upon the base, said foot being slotted and being provided with a guide fitting in said undercut groove, a member slidably mounted in said slot and adapted to engage said locking teeth and being tiltable out of engagement with said teeth, and means carried by said member for moving said movable jaw.

5. A work-holder comprising a base having a fixed jaw, said base having an undercut groove therein, locking teeth in said groove, a movable jaw having a foot slidable upon said base, said foot being provided with a guide fitting in said undercut groove, the upper adjacent surfaces of said base and said guide being beveled, said foot having an undercut slot therein, a member movable with relation to said movable jaw and cooperating with said slot, said member adapted to engage said locking teeth, and means carried by said member for pressing said jaws together and for tilting said member.
6. A work-holder comprising an elongated base adapted at its ends for attachment to a work table, said base having a fixed ja. adjacent to one end thereof, and having an undercut groove extending from said jaw to the opposite end of said base in the upper side of the base, a movable jaw having a foot adapted to slide upon the upper surface of the base, said foot having on its under side a guide adapted to fit within said undercut groove, said foot having an undercut slot therein, locking teeth upon the bottom of the undercut groove of the base, a member having a tooth adapted to engage said locking teeth, said member extending through the slot in the foot, and having lateral proections lying within the undercut portions of the slot in said foot, said member being adapted to tilt on said projections to carry its tooth into and out of engagement with said locking means, and a screw-threaded spindle extending through said member and bearing against said movable jaw.
7. A. work-holder comprising a base having a fixed jaw, guide means on said base, a movable jaw having guide means cooperating with the other guide means, a substantial clearance being provided normally between said guide means, and means to press the second mentioned guide means against the said other guide means to assist in holding the movable jaw rigid.
S. A work-holder comprising a base having a fixed jaw, guide means on said base, a movable aw having other guide means with slanting surfaces thereon cooperating with the first mentioned guide means, locking teeth on said base, a member having a tooth to engage said locking teeth, means on said member bearing against the second mentioned guide means to press said guidemeans against the first mentioned guide means, and means carried by said member and bearing against said movable law for moving the latter toward the fixed jaw and for pressing said guide means together.

A work holder comprising a base having a fixed jaw, guide means with slanting surfaces on said base, a movable jaw having guide means with slanting surfaces cooperating with the other guide means, and means to press the slanting surfaces of the second mentioned guide means against the slanting surfaces of said other guide means to assist in holding the movable jaw rigid.
12. A work-holder comprising a base having a fixed jaw, said base having an undercut groove therein, locking teeth in said groove, a nnn'able jaw having a foot slidable upon said base. said foot being provided with a guide fitting in said under-cut groove, a member movable with relation to said movable j aw, and adapted to engage said locking teeth, and means carried by said member for moving said mo able jaw.
