Description
PATENTED NOV. 8, 1870.

BED SPRING,

DAIlEMBERT T. GA'LE, OF FORT 'WAYNE, INDIANA.
' Letters Patent No. 108,998, dated November 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-SPRIidGS- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making'pa rt of the same.
To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, DALEMBERT T. GALE, of Fort \Vayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed- Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is'a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being'had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. Y
This invention relates to an improved manner of connecting the top and bottom coils of coiled bed-' springs, and itconsists in an arrangement of loops or eyes in.one end coil, and hooks in the other, and the hooking of the same together, as hereinafter de-. scribed.
Figure 1 is .a plan view of several springs joined together according to my improvement, and
Figure 2 is a top view of the same.

Each spring has the plain loops or eyes A, formed in one end coil, and th'ehooked-loops B in the other end coil, as shown, preferably four of each, atthe four equi-angular points, and they are placed, when I forming the bed-bottom, alternately with plain loops and hooks up, so that where the end coils of the adjaeent springs meet, the hook B of one will engage the plain loop A of the other'that they may be looked together, and thus be secured bybending the hook so as to prevent the release of the loop or eye.
These loops, or eyes and hooks, are made by bending and shaping devices employed in connect-iouwith the coiling apparatus, and adapted'for forming .them quickly and economically," zmd'when so made, they form a very simple and cheap means of fastening the,
' springs together, being especially desirable in that no detached connecting-pieces, strings, or the like, are
needed.
A bed-bottom formed of these springs, connected to slats in the usual manner, may be rolled up into a roll convenient for moving, without inj uring the springs or connections.
1Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The springs formed with the loops or eyes A in one 'e'ndcoil, and the hooks B in the other, and hooked together thereby, substantially in the manner specified.
I Theabove specification of my invention signed by me'this 6th day of. October, 1870.
.DALEMBERT '1. GALE.-
