Patented Mar. 10, 191ML.
Application filed December 12, 1906. Serial No. 347,562.
fo all ,fw/rom, it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Cmnnxcn II. VILEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Iilartt'ord, in the county of I-Iarttord and State ot' Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Indexes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more especially to the class of devices used for ascertaining the location of matter in account or similar sheets, and the object of my invention is to provide simple and convenient means 'for locating such matter; and a further object of the invention is to provide an index that shall have a wide range as to the subject matter to be located; and a further object of the invention is to provide a structure in which the wear upon the index shall be reduced to a minium.
An index in the use of which these objects may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicha Figure l represents what may be termed sections of a ledger and showing the embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of a portion or' the pages of an account book showing a modified form of the invention. Fig. 3 is a View showing a modiiied form of index page. Fig. I is a view showing a different arrangement ot the index characters.
For the purpose of simplifying the illustration and description oitl my invention I have shown only a portion of a book structure which would usually be employed, the invention being complete in each section, although several such sections may ordinarily be employed.
Thenumeral' 5 denotes what I term a permanent index sheet, in that it is designed for retention in the book longer than other sheets or until worn out, and this sheet may be provided along one edge with indicating characters 6. In the preferred form of the invention the t'ront or long edge of the sheet, is arranged for the reception of these indicating characters, although it will be obvious that the characters may be located along any edge.
A set of memoranda or account sheets 7, constituting temporary sheets and consisting of any suitable number, is located appartenant to each permanent index sheet. These temporary account sheets are so formed outside of the edge of the permanent index sheet 5 that they may be selected by means of indicating characters located or to be located on said permanent index sheet, the formation on each memoranda sheet being located 'tor identification by means of a special character or characters on said index sheet.
In the form shown herein the memoranda sheets are stepped from top to bottom along their front edge, a step on a sheet being lo cated opposite a character on the permanent index sheet. It, as hereinbefore stated, the character on the permanent index sheet shall be located other than as shown, the iorma tion of the edges of the memoranda sheets, of course, will be correspondingly positioned.
A section indicating sheet 8 may be omployed, and this may be suitably formed as with a tab 9, which may bear any suitable character for the purpose of locating a section desired.
In carrying out my invention .I contemplate that the characters may be supplied to the permanent indicating sheets 5 and that the size of said sheets shall be with special reference to that ot the memoranda sheets, and the latter shall have their edges formed so that they may be selected by means of characters which may be placed upon the permanent index sheet, although, ordinarily such permanent index sheet will be provided with the proper characters as desired in the book when completed for sale.
In the form of device shown in Fig. 9. the invention contemplates the use ot two sets .of characters l1 upon a permanent index sheet 10, and the memoranda sheets may be included in two sets 13 and let, each set being selectively formed with reference to characters at the edge of the permanent index sheet. From this it will be seen that a single permanent index sheet may be made to serve for a plural number o -E sets of memoranda sheets in a single section. In this instance, as before, a section indicating sheet bearing a tab 25 may be employed for locating the different sections or sets of sections of this book. From this it will be seen that a section includes at least one permanent index sheet, one or more sets of memoranda sheets, and a section indicating sheet, the latter if desired. It will be s'een 'further from this arrangement that the permanent index, by means of which the memoranda leaves are located, is not touched in the operation of finding such sheets, and that the life of such permanent l index sheet is therefore greatly prolonged, as the characters will not become defaccd or the sheet worn by constant handling, the wear coming on the selective formations of the temporary or memoranda sheets, which do not bear characters to become defaced.
The index may be used indefinitely and will outlast the continuous use of a large number of memoranda sheets, especially as the latter are frequently removed and replaced by other pages or sheets, so that they do not get continuous wear. In Fig. 8 of the drawings I have shown the section indicating tab 2O as attached to the indicating sheet or page 21. This form of section indicating means may be employed in some instances, in which case, of course, the section indicating sheet will be dispensed with.
In the use of the index shown in Fig. 1 the talos 9 are employed to indicate a seotion. It being assumed that the upper tab designates section A it may bear that character, and will be used to locate the upper section of sheets as shown in this figure. rIhe use of the section indicating sheet to indicate a section will bring to view the characters along the edge of the permanent index sheet, which indicate the second letter of the names in this section it being considered that the entire section contains names beginning with A. The top letter of the sub-column with the stepped page opposite said letter would locate the names beginning with Aa as Aarons The second would indicate Ab as Abrams In the index shown in Fig. 2, the section indicating tab is used in the manner above described to indicate a section in which either all or a part only of the names ma begin with A. The capital letters on the indicating sheet denote the second letter of the name, all names in which the second letter is between A and E being found on one of the stepped pages between those letters, and so on, the names withA the second letter between E and II being found in the stepped pages betweenthose letters. rIhe small letters indicate the third letter of the name, all names in which the third letter is between a and l appears on one of the steps opposite a, those between l and r upon the steps opposite l and so on. The fourth letter f the name determines the exact page on which the name will be found. All names in which the fourth letter is between a and l being found upon the page bearing the inside row of steps; those between l and z on Athose bearing the outside row of steps. In short the fourth letter of the name will determine the exact step and page upon which the name will occur, the small letters the horizontal rows of steps in which the name -will be found, and the large letters a section of the indicating sheet opposite fwhich a page bearing the name will be found and the tab the section on which the name will be found. For instance the name Abbe 7 being desired the tab will give the section beginning with A., the large letter A will indicate thatl the name will be found in the steps in the section between the letters A and E, all names in which the second letter is one of those between A and E being found in this part of the section. The small letter a will indicate that it will be found on one of the steps opposite that letter, all names in which the third letter is between a and lt inclusive being so located. rllhe fourth letter of the name (e) coming before l indicates that the name will be found on the page having the tab on the inner vertical row opposite the letter a.
In the form of device illustrated in Fig. l the section is located by means of a tab (designated by the numeral l5 in Fig. 1I) as above set out and each section is composed of a plural number of sub-sections 16-17 simi.- larly arranged to the sections 18-14.- in Fig. 2. A sub-index sheet 18 is employed in connection with these sub-sections, the temporary index sheet 19 being provided for the whole section. 'Ihis index sheet 19 is of a width equal to that of the under sub-section 16, and the sub-indicating sheet 18 lies within the steps on the sub-section 16. The purpose of this arrangement is to allow various sub-divisions under a character indicating certain sections of a ledger. For instance the name Smith being one which frequently occurs, the section, covered by the initial letter S is opened, and then by the use of the step opposite the letter in on the main indicating sheet the sub-section in which the second letter m of the name occurs is located. In turning this sheet the sub-index sheet 18 is uncovered which governs all of the names having the first two letters Sm. The memoranda sheet bearing the first or top step may contain all of the names beginning with the two letters Sm with the exception of the name Smith and the other sheets thereunder may bear the name Smith and the letters A, B, C, etc., on a sub-index sheet may indicate the initial letter of the first name of the person Smith I claim- 1. An index sheet designed to receive Vindex characters, a set of memoranda sheets each having on its edge a selective formation relatively located with respect to and to be identified by a character on the index sheet, said formations on the memoranda sheets being blank and being located outside of the edge of the index sheet.
